I have a Rogers Cell and want to convert to a Bell Mobility 'Canada Plan 250' which has long distance minutes instead of mostly local minutes. My Sony Rogers cell phone has a SIMS card and Bell said they do not use this technology so I would have to buy a phone from them. Is there any way to mod my W810i cell so I can convert to the Bell Mobility Plan without getting one of their cheap looking cell phones? All help is appreciated. I'm not very techie when it comes to cell phones, so if I need modifications who can do this work for me, and what is the approx. cost?

Rogers supports GSM and Bell supports CDMA. You have to get a phone that is supported on Bell. If you don't want the cheap freebies then you'll have to spend the money and buy a decent one. You can usually get any phone they have for very cheap with a 3 year contract.

Don't bother... CDMA (Bell/Telus) is old technology... stick with the GSM (Rogers/Fido) for the all the cool new stuff. Just let Rogers know about the plan that Bell has and I'm sure they'll work something out to match you with a similar Rogers plan.

Actually GSM is the older technology. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. GSM is my preference. Alot of the advantages of GSM over CDMA are being lost though, with the GSM/CDMA war. A major one being that CDMA is coming out with a card similar to the SIM card for storage. Can't remember what it is called. RUIA or something like that.

Yup...if you're an existing customer they will match anything that's out there. I have a Telus family plan that wasn't around for long, and wanted to keep the same plan because I can call my wife for free from anywhere within the 905/416 area. At the time of renewal, Rogers had a promotion where new plans got 700 minutes of long distance per month. I called into Telus' customer care and they kept me on my plan, gave me the 700 minutes long distance and upgraded my phone.
In Canada we're still nowhere near the deals that are available in the US though. I could use a $35 plan that would allow me unlimited calls to anywhere in North America.

Just let Rogers know about the plan that Bell has and I'm sure they'll work something out to match you with a similar Rogers plan.Problem SOLVED. I called Rogers as you suggested and they already had an identical plan to Bell, which they call Canada 1 Rate Plan which I converted to from MY5. Now all my minutes can be used for local and long distance without extra penality. $5 extra monthly fee but I will save this with no long distance charges. I guess I get to keep my W580i phone :D

Good choice Gerry....although CDMA WILL be the wave of the future, GSM at this time just offers more choices in terms of phones.

You did the right thing. GSM is the way to go right now. As RACMBS said CDMA/WCDMA is the future.

Also I find Rogers coverage better in SW Ontario, I heard that bell was investing in better coverage but in my experience I had an easier time with Rogers calling and receiving while on the road.

yeah, my mistake on that CDMA vs. GSM comment. Either way, you have more options in Canada right now with GSM phones.

The multitude of rate plans between the 4 carriers [Bell, Rogers, Fido, Telus]
sure can be confusing  I think they do this on purpose
