Am I the only person who thinks that the the behaviour on this site is like an abberration of what most online forums/communities are? I have used the Internet since 1990 and have actively participated in more forums than I care to count. Nowhere do I see the level of moderation and disputes that this site experiences. Sites with 100x the membership and traffic fare better than TGN in terms of signal/noise.
Do the members notice this?
Do the moderators/owners notice this? If you do, do you ask yourself why? What reasons did you come up with to explain this phenomenum?
For those who want to say that this is such a "tight knit bunch of people" and we're bound to fight like siblings; I don't buy it. Any site where the target demographic isn't a bunch of 12yr old video gamers usually exhibits strong commodery, TGN isn't special in this regard.

ya i would have expected it to be the opposite. Since lots of us DO play golf together a few times a year, you would think it would be much better, because most of us can't "hide behind a username" like on other sites where you don't get together.

IMO....golf and sports in general can cause people to be very emotional, sometimes beyond common sense. I can say I have crossed the line on occasion trying to prove a point.....GG25 can attest to that. GG25 and I are now great chat room friends, because we both agreed to disagree. Just using this as an example Chad!:hush:  :D
I will say though there are people who simply believe in their opinions and will fight with anyone about it. I remember that "aze Pete" who eventually was banned due to his inability to debate his theory on the golf swing. Using that example I do think the moderators/owner are very good in monitoring the site. They let you make your point and as long as you don't cross the line of common sense what is wrong with hashing it out?
Compare this chat room to what happens at soccer matches and it makes us look like we are sitting around a camp fire singing folk songs!;)

It must have happened recently as I recall seeing him post only a couple of weeks ago.
hogannut, I'm not so sure I agree with your assessment that it has to do with being sports related. It's a golf site, none of the other 4 golf forums I've been on have the problems TGN does.
As to soccer hooliganism, I fail to see how it has anything to do with this topic. Are you going to use the civil unrest in Iraq as your next example?
The point of this thread concerns behaviour in this online forum. Not human behavioural patterns.

Wayland; did you play competative hockey? I totally see HN's point that he is trying to make.
To your other point, being sarcastically facetious is borderline stirring it up and the behaviour is going against the point your are trying to make. Is the TGN shannigans rubbing off on you the wrong way?

LiR,
I'm sorry but you've lost me here. Only hockey I played was in the street afterschool as a y00t.
I'm not being facetious. The point I was trying to make originally was that this forum has more *ulls*it than any other I've visited in my almost 2 decades of online activity. This is a golf forum, aside from the useless Leaf/Sen threads there isn't much rivalry type posting which would foster the strong emotions shown on TGN. It's not a forum where you have to pick one side and the other side is the enemy (as in the world of english soccer).
Anyways, I was just wondering if it was only me that noticed this. If you don't agree then it must me and I'll turn down my sensitivity meter.

My last comment on this thread is this. I have had nothing but good experiences here. TGN was the first chat room I have been on, so I can't compare. I have enjoyed everyone I have met and golfed with at the TGN events. I will also say my own game has improved as well due to the chat room. I met my caddy here.....and LIR and myself really came together as a team this year and put up some decent numbers in the last few events we played in.
If I never found TGN I do not know if my game would be where it is at right now. Just think how much stronger my fingers are from all the key strokes (ha ha).
If you don't like it here, then simply leave. Don't write that you are leaving because of this or that, just leave gracriously. If you don't like the way the chat room is being run, then don't chat anymore. Doesn't this make more sense than stirring up all this s**t??????

I have nothing against you personally, please keep that in mind as you continue reading. If your attitude in life is to simply give up, throw out anything that doesn't work, or you don't agree with...that's your choice. But if we all lived by that mantra, I can guarantee you that there would be alot fewer things that we enjoy in life. Things don't get fixed or improved if we don't stop to question what could be different or question why things are the way they are.

I have and still do frequent several internet forums, they all pertain to golf and I have seen first hand many similar issues occur in these other forums that arise here. TGN is not an anomaly in my opinion.
There are always some individuals that like to stir the pot, sometimes that occurs innocently through a poor choice of words, other instances are deliberate and are only intended to upset others.
Some individuals behave in a different manner when cloaked behind an IP address, they may or may not be that way when you are face to face with them. Ignoring probing posts or comments is at times the only way to not feed the disturbers, again, in my opinion.
TGN is not as moderated as some other forums, we try to step in where we feel it is warranted. None of us have the time or inclination to sit at a PC 24 hours a day and deliberate over each and every word. People should have more consideration for other forum members, watch your choice of words, think twice or more before hitting the "submit reply" button and be respectful.

Politics are a part of every forum, as is debate and bickering at different levels. I personally dislike politics and the BS that goes on in a lot of forums and yes theres lots of it here but I try and stay out of it and focus on what I'm here for and that's to share my interest in golf.
Many people here do the same but it's inevitable that personalities (especially strong ones will clash). I've met lots of great people here who have helped me out, and this is the first golf forum I joined last year when I started playing.
I've definitely seen this forum lose focus from time to time and chaos take reign, yet I've always come back as have many of you here. I try not to take things personally and stick to golf and ignore the rest. (^_^)

This is the type of response I was looking for. The troublemakers are the ones who can't seem to read and make things personal.
If anything comes out of this thread, it's a great example of how people misinterpret things and then take it personal. There's one thing I always do before I reply something that might be controversial. I will always read and reread the post I'm about to flame. And even then, with my retort all typed out, I sit on it for a few minutes. I can guarantee you that 15% of the stuff I write doesn't get posted in here as I tell myself that it's not worth it and I simply hit the back button (you should see some of the doozies I've deleted).

Are you serious? Listen, I agree with you. I have noticed the things that you mention in your original post... but a few of the things you have subsequently posted following your original post has been very unnecessary. Your adjectives of people's threads and posts (i.e. gay, retarded, etc.) are uncalled for. You may very well use these adjectives to describe things in your everyday life, but when you're on an online forum, where the audience is public, you need to be a little more PC than calling things "gay" or somebody's posts, "retarded".
Just adding the "evidence"
...aside from the gay Leaf/Sen threads ...
...Kettle black? Harry get a life. When was the last time you made a post without having to put some retarded disclaimer for the mods to read. Chicken ****. If you can't reply with something even remotely on topic, bugger off and bump your post counter elsewhere.

I can't put my finger on it but... there is something about this site. There has been more public explosions, ejections and departures during my time here than all the other sites I frequent combined.
If you hang around BSG you should know that is not the case, moderation there is much higher than it has ever been at TGN.

Yes I think the 'kettle is black', but you do not recognize it.
Seeing as you requested it....
Please go back to the first page of this thread. Show me what pot shots I was taking. You are throwing pot shots Harry.
Listen, I can overlook your typos but what I can't ignore is your lack of reading comprehension. If you take the time to analyze my sentence, "gay" is used as an (get ready here...big word coming) A D J E C T I V E to describe the post counter. Simply seeing the word "gay" and projecting it on yourself like that could be viewed as a Freudian slip by some. Regardless, I didn't call you "gay".

I didn't really need an apology... nothing you said actually offended me (i hang out with some pretty vulgar guys)... i was just answering your request to show you where you took pot shots at members. i don't know if you'd consider them pot shots, but they were definitely insults to particular members' posts and threads... and in once instance even an insult to that member (i.e. a term in reference to poultry ;)).
Anyway, again, no need for the personal apology as I wasn't offended... but I think it's important to realize that there may be people who are and they may be reading this thread.
Mod alert: the term "people" used in this thread is by no means insinuating any racial prejudice

I agree with greywolf that every site goes through these periods. I also think that larger sites end up having a lot more variety in their discussion topics, so you don't have the same people engaged in the same debates over and over again.
IMHO the "tight knit bunch of people" actually has a lot to do with it. I believe the saying "familiarity breeds contempt" is applicable here.
When I first came here, there were a lot of new people joining in and taking an active part in discussions. It seemed to me that much of the moderation was actually a case of getting new members aclimatized to the rules of the forum and the way things work here, and in some cases the disputes actually brought the community closer together (remember PeterG??).
Now it seems that the arguments are mostly between long-time members fighting the same old battles and becoming more and more agitated with each other. We don't seem to be getting a lot of new members (frankly I think they are intimidated by the bickering and banter), so we don't get a lot of new things to talk about.
Personally I would like to see this site become a little more "welcoming" to beginners and high-handicappers - which is the demographic of most of the new members here. When they post their simple and naive questions that we've all seen 100 times before, we could show a little more patience and understanding. Because I think with some more new blood in here, we could be talking a lot more about golf - the one thing that brings us all together - and a lot less about the things that tick us off about each other.
Sorry, this is a lot longer than I thought it would be. But that's my personal opinion, FWIW.

The only way I could explain the difference between this site and the other sites is the difference between Ultimate Fighting and a Brawl at your local night club or drinking establishment.
Both events are about guys (gals?) pommeling each other but... in the UFC it's about the thrill of battle. The environment is controlled. The aggression and the "bad feelings" during the fight disappears once the fight is over.
The brawls happen in uncontrolled settings and unlike the controlled fight, "bad feelings" remain after the fight.
There's alot of bickering and personal attacks on the other forums, but after one of those fights are finished, "bad feelings" are gone and things return to normal.
It's been my observation that on this board, more members decide to depart from the community after such a heated episode and they do so leaving a public note that they are leaving. Even the most innocent of threads could blow up and cause a member to leave with bad feelings.
If I'm not mistaken, I think this is what Wayland was trying to point out. The same thought has gone through my mind and I'm curious to see what other members think.

I think what happened here is very much like a poorly officiated soccer game.
I am thnking about the Chilean and Argentina under 21 match this past summer, and also the Portugal vs Holland match in WC 2006.
If the refree of the match does not detect heigthen tension in the first sight and/or if they penalize players inconsistently, then the players feels like they can or have to take matters into their own hands. As soon as one player get away with a infraction but the penalty does not appear to fit the crime, then the rest of the players will follow suit.
Then you also have the bystanders not happy with the refreeing and start expressing their displeasure. And this eventually evolves into a mob mentality where people start rioting and rebelling.

I am just outlining what I have observed and try to draw parallel with other examples to give it context.
As far as the soccer matches go. Yes, the officiating were less than desirable, but it was the people who decided to act out of control, not the referee.
Does that mean I can do a better job officiating? Absolutely not. Not in my wildest dream.
As far as potentially getting banned? Nah, I think the MODs can differentiate rationality vs. blind argument.

The advertisement that is BSG isn't even considered a forum IMO. Other forums I've been on are golfopinions, golfwrx, tourspec, fgi, ottawagolf.
Personally I don't like the negativity and pessimism coming from a lot of posts about golf course layouts, shape, bad starters, mediocre service...etc.
Too sunny and hot...too cold and raining...too much aeriation....dry greens...wet greens...
I think this forum should be more about the game itself, the friendships that you make from here and the fun that you have joking with these same friends. Lately...and I mean in the past 2 months...if it's not bad course review it will be war between 2-3 members. Can we have more GOLF discussions and less of...ClubLink is not good enough...Golf North or Kaneff golf also are bad.....RCGA couldn't be more terrible with their pick for the Open...ETC......wow...so much pessimism
Other than that I like it here:D Some good guys...some good times....some good scores.

I'm not sure what forums the original poster frequents, but I've been on boards of different types since 1994, and the kind of behaviour we're talking about has been present on pretty much every one i've ever see. And there's a simple reason. If I'm in a restaurant and having a discussion, i'm unlikely to have someone come up and scream at me and put me down. This is because of many things, but primarily that most people won't be belligerent or overly rude to you to your face, or in your presence where there might be direct consequences - embarassment, a fight, awkwardness, etc. Online, people are hiding behind a convenient facade of a computer screen, free to yell, taunt and do all the things that would be social taboos any other place.
If you think of it, it's not much different from how people act on the highways. Separated by a layer of glass and steel from other motorists and not required to look you in the eye, people do incredibly rude and aggressive things to one another that they would never do in, say a supermarket.
i remember reading something one time from a philosopher (cant remember which one, if anyone knows please tell me, it's annoying me) who explained it pretty neatly :
"a man's true character isn't revealed by what he does in public, but rather in what he does when nobody is looking"
people are just revealing their true selves online... I wouldn't be surprised if the people who go nuts online and try to pick fights do so simply because they could never see themselves doing it in real life (but want to)

No doubt, people type things they'd never say. The Internet has a cocoon effect with probably more upside than downside, which is not to say there's not plenty of downside.
FWIW, since Al Gore invented the Internet, I haven't frequented any Internet bulletin board or chat-type room that didn't have this kind of stuff going on. It ain't right but it is common.
Before I say something that might be taken as derogatory, I always try to ask myself if I could then face this person on the first tee tomorrow morning.
One thing that puzzles me is how so many people think their opinions are actually worth something. They are worth exactly what we paid for them.

Landlord's first point is well taken. If anyone remembers the CB Radio craze in the '70's you saw the same thing. Proplr sheltered behind a "handle" would behave and say things in a manner they would never do or say in public.
In regards to his second point also agree, it's kind of like talk radio, which is based on the mistaken assumption that the average person has somrthing worthwhile to say:hush:. Yes I know that's elitist, but so be it.
