Although it has not been publicly made known, a few days ago, a man was pronounced dead at Rolling Hills Championship golf course after he was struck by a ball.
Scary stuff, giving the folks an easier decision not to renew next year.
How could this have been avoided?
Well, we need to examine the details more closely, but again, there are no details regarding this incident.

As far as I can tell it is.
I know my mom didn't say this to deter me from golf.

Very shocking and sad news. I feel terrible for this guys family. Goes to play golf and doesn't come home. I have seen people hit before and it is a scary thing. IMO....if after investigation it was determined that the guy who hit the shot saw the player he hit and knowingly hit the ball before the guy was out of range some sort of charge should be laid upon him. Not knowing the details it is hard to comment. However, I would think for sure there will be a police investigation.

I agree with Hogannut. Having played Rolling Hills a few times before, I'm not so much surprised that it happened as I am that it didn't happen sooner.
I've found that a lot of the golfers that play at Rolling Hills do not have the courtesy to yell "Fore" on their shanked shots. I've once had a tee shot roll up 6 inches behind me with nary a warning. This happened again on the SAME round but from a different hole!
A friend of mine played there this summer and while waiting to tee off, an errant ball screamed by and brushed his eyelashes! Moments later a gentleman scrambled up looking for his ball without so much as a sorry. This would have been grounds for fist-a-cuffs but he was gracious and let the man of with a warning.
I don't see a lot of marshalls doing a whole lot out there these days and what with these inconsiderate, etiquette-averse players dangerously roaming courses like Rolling Hills has helped me decide not to play there anymore. This unfortunate story reinforces my decision but it's not just Rolling Hills but more players in general that are not being considerate to warn their fellow golfers/duffers.

This could have happened earlier this year when I was at Lakeview. I was there as a single and got paired up with a 3 some of friends. Only 1 of the 3 was under a 100 shooter. When we were on the 13th tee the one guy smacks his tee shot straight at the 14th green and the foresome standing on it. Hits a guy in the upper left sholder. Could have been really bad a few inchs higher. The young guy that it hit then wanted to start a fight with our group as we didn't yell FORE! Somehow in the 1/4 of a second that it took the ball to travel to where he was standing we were suppose to be able to do that. Still lucky it didn't go higher on him.

hang on, maybe everyone should take a vallium!!!
We have an unconfirmed report that a person died on a GTA golf course by being hit by a ball.
We don't even know if its true!
How many people have died in traffic accident in the GTA in the year to date!
Even if it is true, your probably in far greater danger of dieing in a traffic accident getting to the course compared to once you are on the course.

I've been hit by a golf ball twice, both times in the shoulder. I'm sorry, people; but there is no excuse for not yelling if you are unsure. I'll even yell for others in my group if there is even a CHANCE that it might be near someone else. Last time I got hit I nearly pummeled the guy who did it because he really didn't think it was near me.... even though it hit me on the fly. Ignorance is not a defence in the eyes of the law. Actually, buddy came up to me laughing like it was some sort of a joke. My cooler head prevailed, but I was ready, willing and able to give him a beat down of gargantuan proportions. Then I realized that he really wasn't worth it. But I did tear his golf shirt off his back for the inconvienience. Wonder how he explained that to the wife when he got home. Funny thing was, the guys in his foursome seemed to totally agree with me, backed right off and let me rip into him ( no pun intended ) without so much as a peep. We play a game where we hit a hard projectile into uncertain conditions at times..... the least we can do is try to protect our fellow players from injury. That being said, accidents do happen; but if you are in plain view, it is no accident. Happened on the 14th hole at Lakeview. Hopefully our little altrication woke buddy up from his perma-sleep. This is one of the reasons why I try to avoid Lakeview these days.... I've been hit there twice, the third time might just be a charm....

I find most time's either people are deaf or the wind makes it impossible for people to hear when someone yell's fore. About a month ago I hit a strange one that went out far and straight then for some reason started to draw and ended up in the other fairway. When I noticed it heading for the other fairway I screamed "Fore as loud as I could as well as one of the people in the group that was standing behind me tracking my ball. I guess it landed a couple of feet from the guy and he came tearing down the fairway looking for retribution. I let him know quickly that his agression will be met with force. Hey I used to do it all the time in hockey. Didn't think I'd have to in golf but I'm ok with it.
I think when people see a ball landing near them they are the ones that don't think and get instantly mad and want to vent on the one who hit it. They don't seem to have the intelligence to think they may not have heard the fore from 250 yards away or there was so much wind that you can't hear. I've been out on windy days where I have a hard time hearing a playing partner walking down the fairway right next to him.

You're a Packers fan! Didn't really pay attention to the avatar.
Work for a company headquartered in Green Bay...been there many times. Our CEO commissioned a massive bronze sculpture of Bart Starr...there is no place to put it in the city so it's in our main manufacturing plants.
City is the ******* of the world. All the food is either deep fried or has cheese on it. Brett Favre's steakhouse pretty good.
Packers games are unreal...atmosphere is electric...Lambeau Field is a friggin amazing facility.
There is actually a wall in the stadium atrium where you can buy and post plaque to memorialize a dearly departed Packer fan.

I definitely appreciate your thoughts. In many circumstances they would be valid. However, on the hole in question, it is a dead straight, flat fairway. Not a breeze of wind. And they most certainly did not yell. Not to mention that you would have to be practically blind not to see 3 people standing " IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FAIRWAY!!!" 250 yards ahead of you. This was a fairly young man who hit me ( clearly had a few bevvies...) not some geezer ( my apologies to all the geezers out there) who had just hit the drive of his life and just couldn't see it. The sun was not a factor. This guy was just plain stupid. End of story. Can't make excuses for a moron.
....And mama always told me... you can fix a lot of things, but you just can't fix stupid.;)

One of my lifelong dreams is to go to Lambeau and see a packers game. You are one lucky bastege. :) Nice to see our boys going 5-1, nobody really saw that coming. Lets hope we can keep it up and make a run for the 'Bowl. Let the Gunslinger roam.....

I'm too old for altercations anymore. I now have pains in places for no reason at all. This is one reason I quit hockey. I was hoping that golf was a non contact sport. Of some of the courses I've been to, this may not be the case.

I was playing the 2nd hole at Tangle Creek golf course ( a driveable par 4 ) and was about 30 yard's from the green chipping my ball when this golf ball flew right by head, it must of been traveling 100km's an hr if not more, if it would of hit me in the head my wife would of been arranging my funeral!!!. I just can't think of someone being hit by a golf ball in the head at the speed's it does travel, I won't hit if anyone is in the fairway, unless I'm dead certain they are unreachable.

I have a friend who was hit by a golf ball from a drive. It came from an adjacent fairway and they did yell fore. But he did not hear it. It laanded on the top of his head and he was knocked cold for about 5 minutes. We were playing together and you can imagine the reaction from us 3 plus the people coming up the other hole. Trust me, if it was a line drive, he would be dead.

the only way you can hit onto the 14th green from the 13th tee is by purposely aiming at it.

If that's what he said he's a liar and should be missing teeth,as
the 14 green is slightly behind the 13 teebox even from the very back.

I'd like to see someone hit the ball backwards for a change....
But in this case it would appear that he hit it dead perpindicular to his "intended" line. Not sure it's possible. Maybe he mixed up the holes.....

Like to know if its a true story.
I wonder too if yelling fore absolves one of liability? I mean yelling fore does nothing to protect someone at risk of being struck. In fact if your hear someone yell fore, your just as likely to move into the path of a ball approaching as move away from it (unless you happen to pick up the flight).
In my experience, I usually hear fore, then hear the ball land somewhere nearby. Gotta say if I lose an eye or suffer irrepairable damage as a result of being hit, I'm suing regardless if I hear fore or not.

I have a family friend that lost an eye from someone in his foursome hitting him. He must have walked ahead of his playing partners ball, definate no no. His friend yelled fore and he turned around just in time to take one in the eye. I wonder if it would have been worse if he didn't turn around and get hit in the back of the head

Wouldn't most of us reflexively turn AWAY from the direction of the "Fore"?
And FWIW, I'll take the back of the head over the face, any time.

When you hear FORE you should crouch and cover your head !
I've noticed very few players yell Fore anymore. The other problem are the courses that do not provide a safeguard against errand tee shots and some are so obvious that negligence could be construed.

Sad news indeed but hardly a total shock.
Many people are killed every year worldwide on the golf course.
This is 1 of the reasons why golf etiquette is so important...its not all about being fussy and quaint.
A golf ball travelling at the speeds they can is a deadly weapon.
Accidents sometimes happen.............we just need to make sure they are accidents and not avoidable incidents.
But its always sad news when a golfer picks up his tee for the final time.
At my local club it happened approx 6 or 7 years ago and every year in July ( when it happened ) a wreath is laid at the side of the 18th green where it occured.
My condolences to his family and friends
