How so? He made the decision to go on TV so anyone that recognizes him would know. What is the problem? The problem is that why would someone make a big announcement about this.... a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do to get out of whatever....The important people that know about this keep it quit... why should someone let everyone and their uncle know about it... I understand if you see it on tv yourself thats fine... I just don't think its something that needs to be brought to this board... and to tell ya the truth is pisses me off........http://images.usatoday.com/life/_photos/2003/07-15-badboys-inside.jpg All I can say is.... Owen,
If he is actually miffed that I posted this then I'll apologize and ask the moderators to delete the thread.
However, he chose to go on television with it. Do what you gotta do? If you watched the show, it's just someone who provides sound financial advice for how to manage your finances. You don't need to go on television to get such advice. I announced it because he was on television. How often do you get on television? Secondly, I'd never seen this show before and I literally posted this within the first 3 minutes.
Sorry it pisses you off so much.

I'm with Wayland on this one....Gerry and I are great friends, but he did go onto a TV show seeking advise so it's not like this was a big secret that he didn't want to get out. If it was to be kept a secret, I'm certain he would have kept this behind closed doors and none would be the wiser. We are ALL in debt one way or another...hell, I make a great living and so does my wife, but we own a home that we pay a mortgage on to the bank and ya know what? We are IN DEBT......albeit it's a money maker, but we still are not free and clear. But we will be in 25 years.
Owning up his half the battle, I think nothing less of Gerry from him going on this show, and it would take a lot more than that to get me to change my mind. So for all you guys jumping on Wayland for posting it, take a few steps back, grab a beer and just chillax....this post wasn't put up with mailicous intent, nor was it a "classless" post.
Gerry: You are a CLASS act all the way my friend.. Sounds to me like this was a great learning experience for both you and the Mrs.
Lord only knows, I think quite a few of us on here could use some advice from that lady, including myself with all the damn golf, and phones, and golf, and phones. :D

I'm with wayland and racmbs - I think it's cool when folks I can recognize are on the TV. I think it's even cooler that it's a show like 'Till Debt' - a fantastic show that I don't have the stones to be on. (I'm hoping to learn through osmosis). The important part is that Gerry a) recognized the problem and b) sought help. So he showcased it on national TV. So what?

ya i agree, i love seeing people i know on TV and prolly would have started the same thread if i would have seen Gerry on TV. I would have loved to see it, just cause i know Gerry is such a great guy, that the show would have prolly been funny cause he's got my type of wit.
I'm 24 with no student-debt and rent an apartment and i would love to be on a show like this, are we still in the era where people think you're not a "man" if you ask for help??
For the record, when i read the initial post, i got excited and wished i got to see Gerry on TV, i didn't even think about it possibly being a negative post at all.

I have seen the episode with you and your family. I commend you for doing it. My wife and I are fans of the show and we used the things we picked up from the show to get our financial house in order.
We live in a society where credit is way to easy to come by and it's very easy to get in over your head.
My wife knew another couple from that show. They didn't really follow the advice and haven't learned the lesson.

To me, the benefit of the post was that I don't have slice channel and didn't know such a show existed. Gerry, kudo's to you pal. Its kinda like being naked on TV.
I checked their little handy family budget sheet and found it to be very good despite the fact that it does not have an area to budget for golf and golf equipment. Therefore, I will not be sharing with the wife regardless of how bad my finances are currently.
So does this mean less golf for you Gerry???

O.K. so here is my Till Debt story...my wife and I (probably more I then we) had over many years put ourselves in a negative debt position...we were and are not poor, we both make decent monies but we had basically become close to broke...and there is a big difference...we paid our bills, mortgage, loans etc but always the minimums and were not getting ahead at all, anyways my wife found out about this show through a co-worker who watched the show and she went to the Life Channel web-site (new name is Slice TV - for Landlords info !! ) and applied for us to get on the show..well low and behold after several phone interviews and a meeting at our house with a producer we were chosen to be on the show. Of course my wife and I discussed the whole "what happens if/when people we know see the show" situation.
At the end of the day the show didn't really teach us anything we really didn't already know...what it really did do for my wife and I is bring to the front that our communication about financial issues was basically terrible...and because of being on the show we are way better at communication now.
We received $5,000 for doing the show and meeting the "challenges" set out by the show host.
So am I proud of doing the show...yes and no...nobody likes to go on national TV (even if the viewer #'s are very small) and tell the world they are in financial difficulty, especially given I am an accountant...no I did not go out and advertise it to my friends that we did the show...but yes I am proud that we did the show...it is my responsiblity, along with my wife to provide for my family and to do so within our means...we were not doing this...after doing the show we are doing so today.
Due to the $5,000 we received from the show and some belt tightening and some very good luck we are basically out of the bad debt we had...we have a mortgage, 2 car payments and a credit card...we no longer owe any family any money, no line of credits, no other bank loans...we still have debt but it is very much under control.
Again I have no problem with Wayland starting this thread, as mentioned earlier it is on national TV and I cannot nor do I want to control who can and will watch it. (it is on again Saturday at 3pm on Slice TV for those interested).
If anybody wants anymore info PM me and I will happily answer, or just ask in this thread.

How was that statement a cop out? I merely pointed out that getting credit is VERY easy in our society.
Banks will give you a mortgage that is so huge you will have little left over.
Credit card companies will throw cards at you. (case in point, my 16 yr old step son gets the offers in the mail all the time and the kid has held a part time job for a grand total of 2 months in his entire life)
Every furniture store out there has offers of "don't pay until....." going on and that's just credit.
Many people fail to manage there credit responsibly which is the real problem.

Jim, your statement is true but people who get in trouble use that as an excuse or justification. it is very easy to get....but no one is forced to take advantage.

Cudos to you Golfingoalie for addressing your problem and not letting it go beyond the point of no return (case in point the title of the show).
As Jim mentioned, credit is too easily available and should be viewed as an apple offered to Snow White by the witch.

Since I have met all of four-six people on this site I would never add 2 & 2 together, but do remember golf talk during the episode.

Going on a show like this is not about getting out of debt. It is about getting your 15 minutes of fame on TV. If the person in question wanted to get financial advice, there are many other ways to do so and keep it a private matter.
As soon as the person agreed to go on television they have to expect the whole world to know about it.

This is why we had those threads last week about issues on this site.... Someone outed that another was on TV..... People are upset he was outed and the person who could be upset is not....
So why is there a debate going on. Golfingoalie owned up to some financial problems, got some good advise for free and made $5,000 in the process and seems pretty happy and in a better place.
There should be no more debate....
