Hi everyone, want to just ask the cellphone savy (ahem, racmbs:rolleyes: ), when someone gets a phone from Rogers these days, they lock everything? Even a simple upload of an MP3 file is forbidden? I've always bought overseas phones that came unlocked. But my wife just wants a simple upgrade from Rogers but do want the ability to be able to upload mp3, etc to the phone.

They lock it so that you HAVE to upload the mp3 ringtones directly off of Rogers site....what phone does she want? It's most likely that the unit could be unlocked for a small fee, which would then enable her to upload songs onto the unit at her own leisure.
I do recommend that she stick with Nokia though...easiest/cleanest UI of the bunch and very user friendly. I love Nokia's 'cause you can hack the poop out of them. Java based units like Motorola can be done as well, but the UI makes them look like crap....the ONLY Motorola phone I would ever consider buying would be the A1200, aka MING.

Yes. Rogers lock their phones from playing mp3 ringtones. Their excuse is that mp3 ringtones constitute a public performance and is a violation of the music license/trademarks. Sounds like male steer droppings to me...
After much research, I found a way to get my Fido-locked Sony Ericsson phones to play mp3 ringtones without flashing the phone or downloading it from Rogers/Fido. The process is a little cumbersome but it works... and I don't have to spend $$$$ reflashing my phone.
I'm sure there's similar solution for Nokias/Samsungs/Motos and other phones out there.

Unlocking a phone is little bit of a unnerving experience if you've never done it before... if you're worried just take it to somebody to do - see Kevin Haffenden at Bongo - great guy and can unlock *almost* any phone in under 10 minutes.
not sure if i can advertise his services here, but PM me if you need an address/phone number.

The easiest phone that is offered by Rogers for self uploaded mp3 ringtones is the Sony Ericsson W810i. There is a utility on Sony Ericsson's website that will apply the DRM to the mp3 file for it to be a ringtone.
Let me know if you decide to get that phone and i'll point out where the download is on SE's website.

For those that are into unlocking phones, is it dangerous to do it yourself? I know on ebay you can either bid for a set of softwares that you can use yourself or bid on a "code" that you can enter. The latter seems to require another network's sim card to get a certain response from the phone. Is any of these ways any safer? May be the easier way out is just go see Kevin and Bongo Wireless ... So about $20 is about right? Thanks for everyone chipping in with the help.:thumbs_up

You have to be careful. Even if you unlock the phone, features like mp3 rintones will remain locked out unless you change the phone's software. Unlocking the phone however will allow you to use a AT&T/T-Mobile or whoever's Sim cards but you will still not be able to use mp3 ringtones.
If you want mp3 ringtones, you're going to have to flash the phone to change the phone's software. When you go in for service, be specific on what you are trying to accomplish and get only the service you need.
