I work in a downtown office in Hamilton and right now there is 5 Hollywood productions going on down here, one being the remake of the "Hulk". I've been displaced from my parking lot and traffic sucks. Why can't they do this crap in Trawna?

ya i think it is. All the movies were being done in Toronto, but they started charging the film crews too much and they moved down here, and Dundas seems to have a film crew on King Street almost everyday!

The sad thing is that most of the people are still commuting from Toronto, so the Hammer isn't getting the revenue from hotels/restaurants cause they are just leaving Hammer at the end of the day and staying in T.O.

I guess that sucks for Hamilton (I'm from Brantford so don't really care.) But I know my company is making some money off of these shoots. In a Don Cheadle movie shot last year they used are lower level office front for the movie and smudged up the windows for the riot scenes.. This week they are using our roof top.

The restaurant and hotel business may not be improving, but the city still gets cash.

Whether it is in Toronto or Hamilton (or Vancouver), it is a multi-billion dollar industry that is likely to dry up (good timing, David Miller, in announcing the huge film industry complex on the water!) thanks to parity.

In the 3+ years I've worked in Hamilton there has been no less than 3 movies ayear being shot downtown. And everytime I lose my parking lot. I pay by the month and then they turn around and rent it to the production company. Yeah I can park in one of their other lots for the few days to a week but its usually a farther walk to a lot that is cheaper and its packed with everyone else that has to bunch up there.

I have been involved in this industry and truer words were never spoken!

A few years ago when our dollar was at about 60 cents the industry in Toronto and the rest of Canada was going crazy! A group in California was trying to get Canadian tax incentives killed with tariffs claiming that the tax breaks were costing jobs in Hollywood. I argued that all tax breaks could disappear and STILL it would cost about half to shoot a film in Canada than in Hollywood.

Now the dollar is at par and even though there are productions happening there is nowhere near the amount that there was about 5 years ago. The film technicians' union has many members who are not working.

The City of Toronto spending money for film production seems very ill timed since producers will always gravitate to the higher profits which are not available to them in Canada as they once were.

I don't know if I can agree with you that it is dying off here in Canada. In the 3 years I've worked downtown Hamilton I've seen about 3 to 4 major productions going on. This week there are 5 major productions simultaneously.

The fewer films being shot in Toronto the better. They are constantly filming in the St. Lawrence Market area, where I work, and I'm tired of having to walk around (or through) film sets. It's particularly annoying when I leave the office at the end of the day and they're filming (at rush hour) outside our building, and some guy tries to stop me from walking through the set to get home.

I hear ya. Those are exactly the issues I face. Last year when they were filming a period peice about racism (Chicago I think) I was walking from my office to the parking lot. Walking along the street there is a bunch of people standing near a tent they had on the road right beside the sidewalk. I'm just walking by and a security guard actually pushes me because he thought I was getting to close to the star of the movie, Don Cheadle. Heck I didn't even know who he was. I'm just trying to get to my car. And were the heck is this movie? It was over a year ago now.

Next door IS the Embassy....oh my god it's true:shhh:

Next time you go to Chester's order a Baron of beef (if you haven't already)
If you order it with a Manhattan and an order of cheese balls they may mistake you for me.

Are you a Scotch drinker at all?

Whats the Embassy? I'm in the Frontline Focus building. A manhatten and cheese balls I can handle. Scotch or any other alcoholic beverage and I think I'm 10' tall and bullet proof and everyone p1sses me off. Haven't had alchohol for 29 years.

The Embassy is a bar for like minded males (and females I quess). It is right next door to Chester's.
If you have been off the alchohol for 29 year's don't order the Manhatten (wiskey and Sweet vermoth). I would still recommend the chesse balls though. If you go there on the 27th there will be cake. I spend my birthday there and we bring cake for us and the staff.

Finger's is a wine bar between you and Chester's. They have the same owner and share the same kitchen. The Embassy is on the other side with the stone front.
