View Full Version : WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON THIS WINTER?

Continuing on with my depressing realization of the season winding down I thought I'd ask what everyones plans are for the winter in terms of what will they work on in the winter. For me I will be working very hard on not flipping my wrists at impact. This was the first thing my instructor noticed on my first lesson and it was still an issue 4 months later during my last lesson.

I did make big improvements on posture and keeping the club on plane, so it wasn't all bad, but my wrists still are breaking to fast. So this is will be the main focus during my indoor time. I also will be doing our nightly putting competitions in the house. Hopefully these things will keep me out of trouble.

However, with global warming (see the Al Gore post) it will only be for a few weeks!!

I plan on rereading Hogan's Five Lessons several times.
After I read it this summer and followed some of his teachings, I dropped my index by 2 points.

So make sure you read it at least 5 more times and you should drop your index by at least 10!

Fitness and stretching!

First, excessive beer drinking.

Then fitness and some "gordo" drills. Then, I will focus on sharp pants and postering on the first tee to look like a real "golfer".

You will notice a big difference next year if you hit the gym. I go 3 times a week and do an hour of stretching each session. I'm 42 and can still rotate as well as I could when I was 25 and I believe 100% it is because of my exercising.

1) Get therapy so I understand why I do this to myself. :D

2) Stop drinking the Kool-aid and find a more constructive hobby.

(yes, it was a tough day on the course)

I think I may follow suit and buy a medicus as well. Not the driver but the 5 iron. I should be able to swing the 5 iron indoors. Also going to join Mcfit and try to get in better shape. Probably some lessons with Nick.

I will be working on my overall fitness level, and will be going back on my winter regimen of yoga to improve my flexibility. Planning on working more on my mental state than my game....:cookoo::cookoo::dunno::beer:

Making sure my ball striking gets back to normal. I've been out of commission for the last month cause I sliced a piece of meat/skin off my left index finger. I'm crossing my fingers - my good ones at least - that I get all of the feeling back.

Putting and more putting. Prolly buy a new toy this off season to help. Last time out, my poor putting turned a potential 73 into 83 (5 three-jacks).

Like the OP, I'll be solidifying not-flipping. I feel like I have finally rid myself of this terrible affliction the last half of this season, and I want to keep ingraining those feelings so I can mash the ball forevermore!

Really had a great last half of the year with the ballstriking. No more ballooning shots, good quality compression, great divot pattern, for the first time I felt like I had control of the ball with the scoring irons - all due to not flipping.

I am going to pick up Bobby Clampert's instructional book The Impact Zone - hopefully I can pick up some tips and swing thoughts for next season.

I am also going to work on saving $$$ for I have some hefty expenses coming up in the winter time. Less golf = more money in my pocket, so the end of season comes is great timing. Unfortunately, I will be in Chicago next week and probably going to spend some money after spending some dough in Seattle last week. It is rather difficult to resist spending the at-par dollar when in the US.

Being my first full year back in the game after 12 years, I plan on taking lessons throughout the winter and working on developing the beginnings of a real swing without worrying about playing rounds. I figure the pressure to see rapid gains should be much lower in the winter since all I can do is bang balls off the mats anyways.

ball-striking.
rotation of upper-body. flexibility and back-to-the target consistency. finishing the back-swing ... i have a tendency when playing to swing arms-only with disastrous results, usually ruining my chance for par.

i just need to work on my putting and chipping stroke thats the easiest to work on indoors.

I don't worry too much about my swing it's my short game that has been ballooning my scores.

I think I'll work on my snowboarding:)

Exactly what I was going to say. Enjoying one outdoor activity to another.

I'm in the process right now of booking a stay and snowboard trip at Bristol Mountain in NY State. I've already booked two 'two-night stay' weekends at Blue Mountain.

I'll still swing the clubs and putt regularly, but I don't think I'll be heading to Myrtle Beach this year as I'd rather spend that money on the hills.

Fitness and stretching! Here are 2 books that have helped me during the off season..."The Abs Diet" is a great book written by Men's Health Editor David Zinczenko. This bright orange 300 page book tells you what you should eat, how much to eat and when to eat it. Also, it offers many simple programs to help you build strength, gain muscle and lose fat!!! All you need are a few dumb bells to follow the exercises.(soft cover $21.95)
Also, an amazing book is "Strength Ball Training" (second edition) written by Lorne Goldenberg and Peter Twist. This book has tons of separate exercises and specific programs to follow that will get you lean and mean over the winter. This is a great book that also comes with a dvd showing several of the exercises and part of the program recommended.
Let me know how you make out!!

Golfing in Ottawa
Oct 16, 2007, 09:30 PM
Visit Ottawa's two golf domes a couple of times a week.
Hitting distance is approximatley 75 - 90 yards, so you have a good idea of ball flight. My outdoor instructor might be sticking around for the winter so I may take a few lessons to make sure I am staying on track. I have him video tape me and it really gives me feedback to "see" what I am doing wrong.

Also, work on my tempo (slowing my swing) and balance. Nice slow swing and finish high with my belt buckle to the target. I spent a couple of days watching the best in the world at the Presidents Cup and those were the two things that stood out that they all did. Watching Tiger and Furyk great follow through. Ernie Els had the sweetest swing. His nice slow tempo is amazing.............

I have been working on these things the past few weeks and have been hitting the sweet spot much more. Amazing how far the ball travels when you hit it square............

And of course work on putting which makes up 40% of the game.
Concentrate on keeping my head down and nice easy rythm. NO SLAPPING...which I tend to do when "wanting to make that putt".
I watched Tiger during the Practice Round at the Presidents Cup and he was on the 11th green working on his putting. He hit 4 or 5 balls from about 15 - 20 ft and kept his head straight down until the ball was only about 5 feet from the hole. I also watched him again on the Practice green prior to the Saturday afternoon tee off and he was repeating the same thing.

I know we all watch players on TV, but these things really "hit home" when you are standing close to the player and see their technique and practice routines.

chipping and putting.

thats were the pro's are so so good.

i could ALMOST match Tiger from tee to round the green ( ok maybe not but close )

But my weakness is 30 yards not 100 yards......chipping and putting or scrambling.............whatever u want to label it.

Truth is the pro's dont make many 20+ footers either.

But their short game is so good they are often putting from inside 10 feet...and they make plenty of those!

hogannut
Oct 20, 2007, 08:20 PM
Good points. You drop 100 balls 30 yards from the green and a touring pro will hit 80 of them within 5-10 feet, so you're right 20 footers don't happen for them like they do for us. Sounds like a good winter plan to me!

This winter, I'm gonna work on saving for new equipment!!

Just kidding, there's not so much I feel I need to work on.

Just my Drives, Swing Path (Full finish), Iron Play, Short Game, Chipping, Putting

Outside of that, I think I'm doing alright.

Bowling the ball still gets the distance...

Strength training for my wrists, forearms and shoulders and flexability training for my shoulders, hips and gluts. I could afford to lose 40 lbs to have a leaner body to swing around.

At my work one of the guys in our fitness centre is also a golf fitness instructor. I am going to get him to assess me and put a program together.

Today our club closed for winter. (although the weather is still good here for a few more days) so my training starts tomorrow.

Golf wise I will work on the putting, but will only swing for flexability purposes.

That happened to me once.I vowed never to do that mistake again and that's why I only practice my chipping over the winter.
In fairness it had nothing to do with hitting off my fairly new mat. It was a matter of not seeing the total flight.

I bought this very aid and its seems to have really helped already.

I set up a little "puuting studio" inside. Basically a cheap practice thing from GolfTown (19.99), this above mentioned aid and some lead tape, to try and get the right putter head weight going.

Also recently got fitted for a putter and have ordered 2 Pings in my specs, to be used in addition to my regulat Yes! and will tweak the bag over the winter in the putting department. Will get the YEs! bent to my spec too.

This aid is great for allignment and also the mirror is great for seeing if youre moving your head.

Other things are working with a weighted club and getting back onto the Leaderboard that I bought last off season.

When time permits hitting either the Docks or Waterfront Golf Dome to work on some swing tweaks that my instructor suggested.

Im also going to take my clubs in a get them fitted for me. Re shaft my J33 blades (back up set) with Project Xs and also get fitted for a driver.

Feb is lesson time, so an anual trip to my teacher to see how the things we worked on last year have come along.

My ballstriking was improved this year so improved putting and chipping will help shave off the final few stokes.
