My friend and I were practice putting at a driving range (the practice green). As a joke he did a putt "a la Happy Gilmore" where your right hand is all the way down the shaft close to the head, like holding a hockey stick.
It actually worked out pretty well. His putt has just as good as his classic putt. So then we joked about if this type of putting is even legal.
Well, I picked up a RCGA rules book this morning as I'm reading through it... it looks like this type of putting is perfectly legal. I can only see a rule that says the ball must be struck with the head of the club. But I see nothing in the rules that would prevent a "Happy Gilmore stroke".
One issue was the stance. As the "Happy Gilmore stroke" puts you in a posture that your right foot would be over the putting line extending backwards from the ball. But if you lean down even more you can keep your right foot off the putting line so the stroke would be legal.
Since it's legal I may finish off a hole "a la Happy Gilmore" if my ball is only 2ft or less from the cup. Just for jokes. :D

Nothing wrong with that, as a matter of fact Natalie Gulbis from the LPGA has been used a new putter designed for that kind of grip. I have been experimenting with a split grip, and an open stance (like a hockey stick almost) and been really successful with my putting. The name of the putter is Hammy (http://www.hammyputter.com/) I'm playing with some stuff to make myself one, I used a heavy heard (long putter) a 27" shaft and a Long Putter grip... works great

Cool!
The hammy would've been perfect for that putt my friend did. I'm going to try this myself, I mean seriously try it. At first I thought it was a pure joke, but it looks like it's actually a serious type of putt after all.

It works !! People laughs at me when they see me address the ball, but when I make anything from 20 ft and in, they ask if I can show them how.... LOL
I'm averaging 30 puts per round !! now if I could just improve the rest of my game.....

Considering how much time you spend with the putter in your average round, I'd say it's more important than spending all that time trying to get 10 more yards with the driver.

In fact, it was popularized by a professional named Paul Trevillion several decades ago, however, because it looked goofy, very few golfers tried it.
But, with the right hand so close to the head of the club it is almost impossible to twist the club off line on 4' and under putts. It is very effective and worth a try, unless of course you have a back problem.

i putt 10000x better holding my putter like a hockey stick, or a pool cue rather than a "normal" or "traditional" style of a grip.
too bad the rest of my game isnt as good as happy gilmore

One member of my foursome use his putter in the fescue behind a green (that he just sculled over) and did a wrist shot. I’m assuming that was illegal? But it did have a nice effect ;) (inside 5’)

Interesting. They have no left handed, base model, hammys until september. How hard do you think it would be to make one? Hammy site says the shaft is 38" long though.
My friend and I are quite interested in a hammy like putter. I've tried using a regular putter with the hammy like swing but it just doesn't work out well. I really need to have a bent shaft so that the head rests flat.
Many I wish I knew how to make clubs.

I made myself my own version, using a mid sized putter shaft, a long shaft grip and a long John putter head. all from Golfsmith I paid less than $30.00
I used the 480 g head (a bit too heavy, going to switch to a 400g one), however I also have a Wilson belly putter that I cutted of to 38" and that one works great oo. Even so it has a regular grip (my right hand grips just bellow the actual grip)
It's cheap to play with some components until you get what you want...

Do you have a picture of it? I'd like to see what yours looks like.
