OK...think about what you think the worst move your favorite team has made and the impact...
For me it was when the Habs named Rejean Houle as Vice-President of Hockey and General Manager.
Two months later...
Montreal trades Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to Colorado for Andrei Kovalenko, Martin Rucinsky and Jocelyn Thibault
Two months after trading Roy...
Montreal trades John LeClair, Eric Desjardins and Gilbert Dionne to Philadelphia for Mark Recchi and a 3rd-round pick (Martin Hohnberger...who?)
End result...while under Houle's watch as GM, he was responsible for the end of the Habs as a league power. Not only were many of the trades bad, but the scouting and drafting were brutal, too.

Habs:
Not picking Denis Savard in the draft when they had the chance.
Leafs:
Ballard selling the Rochester Americans and essentially stagnating their farm system.

Not picking Denis Savard was a huge mistake by GM Irving Grundman...he went with Wickenheiser who never panned out.
Interesting factoid about Savard...Denis centred one of the best junior lines ever constructed. Savard was in between Denis Cyr and Denis Tremblay, a trio which immediately picked up the tag 'Les Trois Denis.' Coincidentally, all three were born on February 4, 1961 and all three grew up within blocks of each other in the same Verdun neighbourhood.

Some bad leaf moves:
1) Trading for Tom Kurvers for a 1st round draft choice = Scott Niedermayer
2) Trading Russ Courtnall away for John Kordic
3) Letting Steve Sullivan go for nothing

I'd have to say the Kordic trade was the worst move of all times!!

Easy now, there's been plenty of bad leaf trades ;)
- Kurvers for what was Neidermayer looks pretty bad....
- Alyn McCauley, Brad Boyes, 2003 1st-round draft pick for Owen Nolan
- Freddy Modin for Cory Cross
- Jason Smith for picks
oh and for the habs:
- chelios and a 2nd rounder for savard in 1990?

Don't forget the Roy and Chelios trades were forced - nothing much you can do when the player demands trade and the other GMs hold you hostage...
Don't get me wrong - as a Habs fan, they sucked! But Roy and Chelio were being suckholes...
Side note - Roy was actually a Winnipeg Jets 3rd round pick, traded from the Winnipeg Jets for journeyman Robert Picard prior to the draft.
My worst Habs trades are - no particular oudour:
Roy trade
Leclair trade
Claude Lemiuex for Sylvain TurgeonLeafs - has to be Kurvers for Neidermayer...Kordic for Courtnall was amusing, but you cannot even begin to contemplate like in LeafLand with a stud like Neidermayer on the bluline for over a decade...

Among the most recent bad Leaf moves have to be trading Adam Mair and a 2nd round (ended up being Mike Cammallari) to the Kings for Aki (don't call me Bill) Berg.
Signing Kubina, McCabe and Gill to expensive - long term contracts in the salary cap age weren't exactly Einstein moves either.
Weren't Houle's hands tied with the Roy trade because he knew Roy and Trembley couldn't co-exist. Firing Trembley and keeping your HOF goaltender would have been the better route.
I think the other problem the Habs have had lately is that they always seem to go with coaches that don't have alot of experience in the league.

The John Kordic trade was pretty bad.
I will also say the Wendel trade. Although SUndin has been a work horse for over a decade that team was 1 win away from a Stanley Cup. There was a great chemistry in the room. You don't disrupt a team that is that close to going to the show....IMO.
I will also say the Sullivan for Mc Cabe trade, and not just because Mc Cabe put it in his own net 2 days ago. Stevie Sullivan had good speed and was a good player.
THere is the TOm Kurvers trade too.
There are sooooo many bad trades for the Leafs you can't name them all.

You can't really say the Kurvers deal was brutal because... knowing Leafs' scouting and drafting record at that time, they probably would have drafted some other stiff instead of Niedermayer.
The Raycroft and Toskala deals may turn out bad if things continue as they are now... and Rask and Espo shine in the future.
Definitely the Roy deal was the worst Habs deal in recent memory.

Savard helped them win the cup in 96 was it? He worked out, and they had a ton of defense anyhow. They needed to offence.

Sullivan went on waivers, he was not traded. He is still playing, just injured right now, and since he left Toronto he has led his team in scoring each year. Other than last year as he missed 25 games due to injury and finished second on his team I think, only 10 points out or there abouts.
He was by far on the leafs dumbest moves they made, but it made his career that is for sure.
With regards to the habs deals, Roy had to happen, and they got some good players out of it.
Thibealt worked out for a while.
I think letting Vokoun go in the expansion draft was a mistake. Not many know he was a Habitant.
How about letting Ryder go, he is going to be huge as well. I think they need to send Price down to the minors again if he is not going to see any time right now.
Montreal has always been a defensive team, with the offence spread out amongst all lines. I think they will need at least 2 more "OFFENSIVE" players. Kovalev is the only real offensive player they have and he is on the second line. Koivu makes things happen, but no real snipers on his line, just bangers.
Leafs,
Losing Courtnal was dumb, but hey, he unded up a Hab and one a cup there.
Any move that the team has made in the last 10 years has been dumb, but the biggest was letting Quinn run his team with old farts..........
That is where they lost alot of their momentum and prospects.

I knew Vokoun was a Hab...his fate was sealed when he allow 4 goals in the first period of the first game he played in the NHL.
Houle should have fired Tremblay. Trading Roy was the beginning of the end for the Habs.
They will hold onto Ryder...he's too valuable an asset to let go.
Price is starting tonite against Ottawa...let's see how the kid does...he sure looked good against the Pens. Habs are very deep in goaltenders. Huet/Halak/Price.

Sorry, it wasn't Ryder the Habs unloaded, it was Mike Ribiero I was thinking of. He is a solid up and commer as far as I am concerned. Never should have let him go.
Oh well, the Habs are still a better team than the Make Me Laughs any day.

You ready to lose again this year Mr. confident? I won't bet against the Sens, but I'd take a bet anyday again this year that says the Leafs finish ahead of the Habs-beens once again.

Finishing ahead in the standings is meaningless...unless you win the Cup who cares...both teams have no chance.
