Should I bother or simply wait till the spring. There are several indoor options but have found indoor golf rather boring in the past. I've received a couple of offers in the mail and it got me thinking. Are indoor lessons of any value in the winter?

I highly recommend taking lessons over the off season. I did it last season and it changed my game completely. I think the best benefit is that you can work on swing changes that may feel really weird at first and not have to bring that swing to the course. By the time golf season begins you will have a better swing and are more confident in it. I dropped my handicap from from a 28 at the end of 2006 to a 15 at the end of this season.

The downside is that you have limited options on where you can practice. I went to the Nevada Bob's golf dome or the Launch.

If you're thinking that a swing change is necessary (minor or major), I would suggest getting the lessons over the off-season. As Vokeyman said, it will give you time to get used to the changes before they affect your actual game. There are several options for practice facilities. There are several domes around town to chose from. There's also Launch near the 400 and 407. Another option is a facility like Oasis in Markham where you're hitting into a net 10 feet away (good for ball striking and short game).

Looks like I'm in for winter lessons. I took lessons this summer and dropped 10 points off my handicap. These were outdoor lessons and had never tried indoor lessons. Thanks for the insights.

I used the Nevada Bob Dome last year a few times with my father. We were going around 10:00am and the place was usually busy. There are couple of indoor simulators near me also.

I would certainly recommend lessons over the winter. I spend time each off-season tweaking and adjusting parts of my swing, and it is great to not have to worry about on-course performance during that time. It is essential to have either a good teacher or an accurate simulator to track the progress though. I go here and get both - www.teesindoorgolf.com (http://www.teesindoorgolf.com)

Some people prefer domes to sims, but I have found the About Golf sims to be pretty good, with a lot of technical data available, plus Tina knows her stuff. She is also getting a putting lab installed, which I am looking forward to using. Anything to shave the last few strokes off the index :D

Tina is the person I took my lessons from this summer. My wife took some indoor lessons from her this summer also. I agree she is a good teacher.

ClubLink at Glen Abbey has a winter academy. All the instructors are very nice and know their stuff. It makes sense to work on your game in the winter since you avoid getting frustrated on the course. All you do is work on your mechanics. I highly recommend it.

I took a drive over to Oasis the other day to check on my membership. They are closed right now, undergoing an ownership and name change. I believe it's going to be called Toronto Indoor Golf Facility when it opens in mid December. Funny thing is, the Oasis website is still up and running.

Just checked out the site.....$20 per hour seems like a reasonable rate to just use their indoor range....

Might check them out in person...

they have a really good sand trap...a water hole to hit over to test your nerves...a large chipping and putting green...but you do hit into nets which are about 15-20ft away on full shots.
The last price I saw was $10 per hr and 20 for the whole day.

Where are you talking about? Tees (that BH and I were talking about) doesn't have any nets, only good quality sims. Just trying to avoid confusing some people... :D

Its a super nice place to, all new equipment. I think it would be a busy place, its not very big.

According to an email I received and discussion with the owner Oasis is going private. Memberships, inititation fees... CPGA Henry Brunton will be the SOLE instructor. I believe that members will be able to bring in their own instructors periodically but we'll have to see.

went by Rolling Hills yesterday for the Club LInk sale and saw the winter academy area. It looks quite good

very new nets and mats, good size room with about 12 hitting areas.

they have a launch monitor and some plasma displays...I guess for sim golf...not as fancy as a full blown simulator though.

the putting area is so so...no sand or short game area....

so over all, just hitting nets....but definitely new and not worn like some indoor facilities.

There used to be a former sponsor on this site that had a simulator in Brampton. Don't think its a "public" facility and it offers a much more private atmosphere.

he had his "goodbye" thread, MONTHS and MONTHS ago... I don't want a time out, so I'll leave it at that.

great set up though....
