Hello,

I am reaching out to more experienced (than me) TGN members to request experiences and techniques on approaching Very Steep Greens (uphill). I am a beginner and only started this July so please bear with me.

Situation: On a par 4 (Remington Valley) I am playing my 3rd shot on the outer perimeter of the green with a 15 foot uphill put breaking very slightly left to right. Basically I could not putt the ball easily and with confidence after missing the first two shots. Although the distance was good and line was ok, I couldnt make the ball stay and due to steep lie it almost came back to where I started. My approach was to get it within 2-3 feet of the hole cuz I usually 2-putt.

The hole ended up in 10 (my worst ever, so far) but I want to learn from it and ask the seasoned players out there, if there is a fundamental mistake on my end...Should i have used a lob, putted in smaller chunks rather play long shots, any othe techniques or was it purely a miss on my part.

Any Ideas, please?

Cheers

Sounds like a terrible pin placement and gravity took over. There isn't much that you can do other then trying to avoid uphill or downhills putts with big breaks. They tend to take off on you.

I know the hole.
It has a very steep slope and if the green is fast it is really tough. If you are above the hole, you either sink it or the ball will run off the green towards the creek.

Only advice I could give you is to play your 3rd shot to stop just below the hole (vs above the hole).
That will give you an uphill putt, which is where you need to be.

If you are above the hole, there is a good change your putt will run off the green and into the first cut below the hole, you are looking at a 10 to 20 foot putt uphile and you are not even on the green.

If this is the case, I would use a 7 iron, but use a putting stroke.
This should give you the distance since you have just a bit of cut to clear and a lot of uphill green to run. It should not really roll back....if it does, the green is really fast and you are truly toast..

Hope you have another shot at this green before you hang up the clubs for the winter.
