g4bThis has come up many times, if you do a search on Maui you'll see many threads on it. I've played the Dunes at Maui Lani which is a linksy style course that was very good and reasonably priced. Didn't get the chance to play the Plantation course unfortunately...

I just played Dunes at Maui Lani ... it's a decent course with some incredible elevation change on the back nine but several holes were being reconstructed when I was there last week, which was a bit disappointing. Still, a much better price ($80 after noon) than many of the big-dollar tracks.

I just got back from Maui last week. I played one round there at Wailea Gold course. As you probably know, it's where they play the Seniors Skins Game. It is definitely not cheap -- $175 regular rate - $130 twilight, which is after 1pm. Keep in mind the sun sets around 5:45pm.
All that said, I had an amazing time. As far as natural beauty goes, I've never played anywhere as nice. The course was in great condition, the views are awesome and the course won't beat you up (although the Gold is the toughest of the three). Resort conditions.
The bermuda greens do take some getting used to (an understatement) if you're not used to the grain. This is a tip from the pro at Wailea:
"Before reading any putt on a Bermuda green, walk to the hole and give the sides of the cup a good look. One half will look brown and ragged; the other half will be green and cleanly cut. The brown side of the hole indicates the side opposite the grain of the grass. Your putt generally will tend to drift toward that side of the cup and green."
If you decide to play there and need to rent clubs, you should know that for $10 extra you can rent top quality sticks from the proshop, but you may have to ask about it or they will give you the regular rentals (Nike's with regular shafts)
Also, the restaurant at Wailea Golf Club is called the Seawatch. It was the best dinner I had on my entire 2 week trip. It also is fairly expensive -- $120 before tip for 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 beers, 1 girly frozen drink and dessert.
If you're looking to splurge on yourself Wailea is a great place to do it.
Hope this helps,
Jmac

I played the Plantation Course and the Bay course twice each, two years ago.
The Plantation course was fantastic and I highly recommend it. What is neat is playing this course than watching the Mercedes Open in January and recognizing the holes and the greens.
The grain in the greens are freaky and take a little getting used to, as does the Bermuda rough around the greens.
Hopefully you will get paired up with someone who knows the course, as course knowledge is important on almost every hole.
I went there for my 50th birthday and hope to go back for my 55th birthday (and retirement month ).
Maui is paradise. ( I highly recommend snorkelling, even in real shallow water, the tropical fish are amazing.
