Maybe premature, as the 2004 season is just winding down, but any plans out there to upgrade or otherwise switch in new equipment?

I'm very happy with all of my equipment, but I know that I don't have the will power NOT to get something new between now and April, he he.

In my sights ....

- Callaway Heavenwood to replace my 3 iron (I get the distance, but I have trouble getting a towering fade trajectory)

- new putter (I ALWAYS need a new putter)

probably a hybrid w/around 2-iron distance.....I like to hit these hybrids more of an iron than a fwy wood.....any suggestions for brand, besides the new Callaways? I predict that they would be out of my price range....probably looking for around $150 range.....

Would like to try out that new R5 by TM, see how forgiving it really is :$ , but don't think I have the budget or the necessity to purchase a new driver in the near future....

hmmm...trying to save money but if I were to buy a new club, I think it woud be a 3 wood. I don't have one in my bag now so sometimes I'm stuck with laying up with my 3 iron. I especially hate it off the tee when I have to hit in between my driver and 3 iron. I might look into the Cobra 3 woods.

I don't think I'm using a really well known brand and my woods all have steel shafts. I'm going to test out drivers with graphite shafts just to see if I can hit better with them.

I did a swing analysis with Jim Nolson (the CPGA expert on this site) and he also measured the frequency of all my clubs (don't remember the name of that analysis) but he actually said that for my type of swing, the steel shafts are good and my clubs matched my swing really well. Still, I'm curious to see how I do with graphite shafts. Anyone know of a good one for ladies? Anyone want to lend me one to practice on at the range? :D

I also am thinking of shortening my putter, right now its 35 inches. I prefer 31 inches (yes, I'm a short guy). Right now I'm used to my putter though I choke down on it right to the end of the grip. My buddies make fun of me for that but I think the extra length gives me balance in my swing. I'm scared if I shorten my putter that I will take a long time to get used to the length and balance.

i trimmed my putter down last year and it's been great. you actually get used to it very quickly. just make sure you don't shorten too much.

as an added bonus, you don't have the extra 4 inches of grip getting in your way (depending on your swing, of course).

Might decide to re-shaft my driver...much to stiff...it's the stock shaft that came w/my Burner, they say it's reg flex, but I tried my friend's Stiff flex for Pro 65 Gold and that is even flexier than my shaft!

I already read that there is no standard between shaft makers regarding what is defined to be a Reg, Stiff or X-Stiff shafts....that sux!

Where did you guys shorten your putters from? Golf Town? How much? I am really considering it now. Then I'll have the entire winter to get used to it in my living room! haha...
Ego, you going to change your shaft to a more flexible shaft? Which one?

I was debating between the Adilla or the Pro 65 Golf.....but I'm also debating between scrapping that and just getting a new driver....keke......anyways, plenty of time to think about it....

sorry... been away for a while... I've gone through 5 putters so far in my 5 years of golf. Wow... thats a new one a year! The one I'm currently using is the Titleist Futura. Got it cut from 35 to 33' @ Pro Golf in Brampton. But like everyone says, the putter is one of the most important club in the bag! Still doing my research on the Adilla NV shaft. My brother has it on his Titleist 983E driver & he seems to be getting what he wanted out of it. I'm thinking of going to the Ping facility in Mississauga to have my swing studied before changing shafts & what not. We'll see.

Cheers guys & gals!

i got mine done at golf town. the cost ranges depending on the price of the new grip you get; they don't charge you to cut it down. anywhere from 8 to 15 bucks roughly.

Interesting ... lots of talk about re-shafts and cut-down putters.

All of my putters have been shortened to 31 or 32 inches the last couple of years. After you shorten it, the standard 34 or 35 inch putters just feel to weird ... like I need to belly putt them with them or something lol. The putter I have in the bag is actually the first one I bought stock at 32 inches. All prior putters, I cut and regripped myself.

As for driver shaft, I've been playing the Aldilla NV for most of this past season on my 983E. It has a nice stable but sensitive feel on impact, but I should have gone for S flex. I had been putting R flex tip-stiff shafts in my driver the last couple of times (PF65, Bi-Matrix), but the NV seems to be a bit softer. I'm no mechanical engineer, but it just feels that way. I'm getting about the same distance with it as I did with the stock Titleist Speeder S, but with a much much higher trajectory. I don't think I hit my driver so high in my life. I need to flatten it out for my liking.

My personal wish ... shaft makers should just standardize on a plain black color, LOL. Everytime I re-shaft, my wife notices the new color right away and bugs me about all of the other "important" things I could have spent the $ on :D

Right now I feel like I'm belly putting sometimes. The top of my shaft sometimes gets caught in my clothes and throws off my putt. Thats why I need to shorten my putter before next season.
Very impressive Malarky, you cut and regrip yourself? I know its not rocket science but still, requires some skill or else your putter maybe thrown off weight?

Yeah, that's exactly the reason I started shortening the putter. It had issues with my clothes (or gut LOL).

The way I putt, I'm not concerned about any changes in weighting in the putter. Putting is so personal, and ever-changing anyway. And if I screw up, it's just one club to be fixed.

Now, I would never try to adjust my irons or woods in any way. I'll leave that to the pros.

Yes. Such is my sad excuse for a meaningful existence.

And, Queen of ..., I'll let Ho-zay answer your question about the Futura, but my advice to you about putters ... pick a few out and try them all out over several visits to the store and see what feels good to you. Putting is all about feel.

The newer high MOI putters (the huge ones) seems to promote a truer pendulum swing (at least for me), but most people require an adjustment period. I settled on the Odyssey 2Ball DFX, but also liked the Ben Hogan, and the Bobby Grace putters.

Hoz-ay, do you mind me asking which other putters you used before the Titleist Futura? And why they did not work well for you? This might help me to choose the right putter.

started with the standard putter that comes with the "beginner" set... that was just way to clunky & had a graphite shaft... no true feel. still have my Taylor Made Nubbins... has a rubber hitting surface. I think I bought it for the look, again no true feel... couldn't hit the long putts. Sold my Taylor Made Rosa TP putter to a friend so I could buy the Odyssey 2-Ball Putter... The Rosa was good but I guess I wanted the "hype" of the Odyssey putter. To me the Odyssey felt too soft... just like my Nubbins. So I traded that in & got the Titleist Futura... very balanced feel... took some getting use to but I like it & will stay in the bag from now on. Putters are an individual thing. No one can tell you if one putter is better than the other. My suggestion is to try em all out till you find one that you like. I spent countless days at Golf Town & Pro Golf trying putters before I bought the Futura.

Cheers & good luck! :)

Just bought a Titeist Scotty Cameron Futura and one of those custom weights they sell on ebay. Looking to buy a Titleist PT15 3 wood.

New this year:
- Titleist 983K Driver, installed a Fujikura Speeder 757 shaft and couldn't be happier.
- Taylormade Rescue Mid TP 19 degrees

Just played 36 holes at Mill Run for $40 including cart! Can't complain.

Thanks,

Ok, I'll let the secret out of the bag. I have bought these two drivers, getting ready for next season:

Bang Bang-o-matic 460 9* Accuflex Icon V.2
SMT Babylon 9* Accuflex competition

Just want to see why these two drivers (two most popular brand in long driver competitions) are so popular in other golf discussion forums. Perhaps I'll be the one starting the SMT and Bang hype in this Toronto forum!

Well I know I will be buying a new driver during the next 4 months. Which one, that has yet to be decided. I will most likely shaft it with the new UST Irod Driver shaft. I have it in my 3 wood and my 5 wood and absolutely LOVE IT.
Just a note on the person with the UST Proforce 65. It is a great shaft, but it is old. They have not updated it in years. And when you are thinking of new shafts, always check out the rated swing speeds. I have the 65 in my driver now, and I have shafted it with the X-Stiff, since the stiff is in the regular swing speed rating.

Considering that the one holdover in my bag from last season is my 60 degree Cleveland wedge, I think I'll stick to my current setup next year. Other than that wedge, my bag is completely new. Aside from the irons, the most effective change I made was the putter. I picked up an Odyssey Dual Force Rossie II for $20 at a garage sale and that has been by far the best money spent. I was using an old Wilson 8802 and was becoming much too inconsistent with it. The Rossie II is a face-balanced mallet that likes to find the hole. 3 putts have become a thing of the past. I trimmed the putter down to 33 inches from 35. I believe for every inch cut from the shaft, the swing weight goes down by 3 points. To get the weight back up I loaded on the lead tape. Since this putter is silverish grey, it's not a distraction whatsoever. In fact, I lightly sanded the paint off and applied a gun metal finish to it. Looks great. Now the putter is perfectly balanced and the right length for me.

Winter is "hoing" season for me, and I am tweaking my bag. I have built or in the process of building:

Bang BOM 401 Signature series driver with an SK Fiber Pure Energy shaft (whew baby, I can hardly wait to try this on a real golf course!).
Reshafting my old backup Goldwin 300XL driver with a Mercury Savage shaft.
LPG 888 14* & 20* hybrids on TT Crossfire shafts (I will experiment with these shafts as some people don't like the tip trimming required to get these right and I don't have much length to play with as I want to keep the 14* at 41". We'll see).
Maltby Spin Action 52* gap wedge on a Rifle Spinner shaft
Dynacraft RCG putter on Dynacraft double bend shaft (I believe it's by Apollo)
I am also toying with the idea of building a Raven NearNet forged 60* lob wedge on a Spinner.
I will also be pulling the Rifle shafts out of my Dynacraft Copperhead irons, Spining and Flo-ing them, and inserting ProSoft vibration dampening inserts before reassembling and regripping.

Then it will be many trips to the dome to get comfortable with everything before next season! :D

Wow, fantastic price on the Shinne's, unfortunately the lofts are way to low for me (for me, higher lofted drivers give me more carry, unless it's a wicked headwind).

What made you decide on the Babs? For me, it was difficult to decide between SMT heads as all of them are extremely high quality, highly rated and have feverishly loyal users (likewise with Bang). I was looking at the Shinne and the Nemesis because of their relatively reasonable price.

Both Steve Almo and Mike Tait fully deserve the success and high regard their compainies have achieved in a farily short time. Being extremely approachable, decent businessmen and all around nice guys doesn't hurt either.

Anyways, BOM's away!!!!!

Of course all SMT have amazing reviews, but I chose the Babylon cuz it seemed more friendly to the average golfer, and not solely designed for long drive competitions. Also partly mental, because it's the highest end SMT driver, with same design concept as the ERC fusion.

http://www.benspowergolf.com/newsletter_SMTDRIVERTEST.htm

That article also influenced my decision.

Well, I'm sure you can find a Shinnecock elsewhere for cheap. Seems like most of the hype these days is focused on the Spectrum these days, overtaking the Nemesis. Babylon will also probably gain more popularity as more people get a chance to try them.

I did it years ago, and the best thing i ever did. Get into the new tech. of rescue clubs. There awesome and very friendly to use. They come in different lofts by different mfg. so research it a little. You won't be disapointed at all. I have replaced my 3-4 & 5 irons and my score has thanked me to.

Hoz-ay, do you mind me asking which other putters you used before the Titleist Futura? And why they did not work well for you? This might help me to choose the right putter. May I suggest that when choosing a putter you select one that is face balanced. This will mean that you can putt with less grip pressure and still keep the putter face square to its path. A putter that is not face balanced is one that you have to control more.

To check to see if it is face balanced, just place the shaft of the putter across your extended index finger. If the face points to the sky or, if the face is horizontal, it's face balanced.

The Odyssey Two Balls are face balanced, for example.

Just noticed this thread. Winter is 'hoing season for me too, and I'm always tinkering with my bag. New for 2005:

Drivers: I'm happy with the Bang Mellow Yellow and Wishon 915CFE, but of course that didn't stop me from getting a couple more - a Bang P1 2nd Edition thru this site (thanks Alan), and a 8* ZT Maxima 400 that I might keep for simulator use. Also looking for a 9* Bangenstein at the right price to try out.
4-iron replacement: I have a Taylor Made Mid-Rescue #5 and a Taylor Made 200 Steel 9-wood to try out for this spot, and would also like to find a Callaway Steelhead Plus 9-wood and a Wishon 321Li #4/GI335 combo to test.
Irons: The Adams GT's will likely be the backup bag next year, to be replaced by Callaway X14 Pros or MacGregor 1025Cs. It's gonna be a tough choice.
Gap Wedge: Bought a 52* MacGregor MT Tourney to go up against the Adams GT Ultimate.
Sand Wedge: Bought a 56* Callaway X14 Pro that I plan to alternate with the Alien for courses with harder sand conditions and/or simulator use.
Putter: Bought a centre-shafted CER model at Golfworks to test.

I've just bought a new 5-wood. Here are my clubs in my bag.

Driver: Taylor Made Ti Bubble 2 10.5 Bubble2 Shaft Reg.

3 Wood: Callaway Titanium Great Big Bertha War Bird Callaway reg shaft

Fairwood: Nike T40 with reg Nike shaft.

5 Wood: Tommy Armour 845 FS Silver Scot with reg 845 FS shaft.

Irons 3-PW: Tommy Armour 845 S Silver Scot with reg True Temper steel shafts.

Sandwedge: Northwestern Shot saver. Best damn sandwedge I've ever used.

Putter: Zebra putter (about 12 years old)

Clubs to get? I could use a 60 deg wedge and maybe a new driver.

Here's what's in my bag this year:

Callaway VFT Driver and 3 wood

Nike Forged Blades - Love these irons. Can't say enough about them...

Titileist Vokey Black Nickel 60* Wedge - Looking for a 56* in the same finish. If you have one for sale PM me.

Scotty Cameron Studio 2.5 Putter - Bought into the hype. Not bad, good sound.

Sun Mountain C-130 Cart Bag - Got it last year and it is amazing. Golftown has them right now for $168 CAD. Have a carry bag as well, but find it's just easier on the back to push/pull. Especially when you're trying to play 18+ holes/day. Now if the Sun Mountain Speed Cart were to come down in price, that would be sweet.

Can't wait to get out there...

Not really planning on any big changes but ... let's call them additions ... if you know what I mean ;)

Bought two items at the very end of last season thou which would qualify them as at least kinda new for 2005.
First, on my never ending quest for a good putter I ended up with selling everything from a 2 ball odyssey to a scotty cameron or two and started from scrtach. To make it short I found a putter brand hat I find really promising, Yes! Golf C-Groove putters. Did some looking around at Golf Town and then ventured on to research some more online. Only to find out that the Canadian distributor is located in Richmond Hill. Hurray. After talking to them they recommended to get in touch with Jeff Swain at Angus Glen who happens to be their official fitter. Had my fitting session where I tried all kind of putters and settled on a slightly toe heavy model, best for my putting stroke, called Callie. Jeff did the clubworks and shortened it to the correct length for me, 33.5" and the adjusted the lie angel to 2* flat. In addition I also asked him to put a certain grip on I prefer using, Royal STS. He did an excellet job and I'm quite pleased with the results. Must say those C-Grooves are outstanding. There's no skidding anymore and the ball rolls very true.

Got along with Jeff so well, outstanding clubfitter and clubmaker, that I decided to give him another job. I bought a R7 and wanted to change the shaft right away. So, I asked him to put an Accra SC75 in for me. I am a big fan of the Fujikura 757, have it in a Callaway GBB II 415, but wanted something with a high but flat trajectory to get some more roll out of it.
Well, unfortunatelly I got only a few chances to hit my new R7/accra sc75 combo at the end of last season but so far it looks like mission accomplished. I'm looking forward to give it a true run for it's money.

Since one can never have enough drivers I might try also this new season a Cleveland Comp 460. Going to put another Accra in it, Tour 70 this time. As you can see I'm not big on stock shafts. ;)

Anyway, in case someone is looking for a good clubmaker who knows his stuff (which you can rarely say about GolfTown, sorry) I can highly recommend Jeff Swain at Angus Glen.

Maybe premature, as the 2004 season is just winding down, but any plans out there to upgrade or otherwise switch in new equipment?
Up until recently I had no intention on adding anything new this year. Then that terrible person jsunsun made me an offer on an SMT Babylon.
Tempted by the fruit of another I could not hold back. So now my back up is going to a friend and I have two main drivers. Beware of jsunsun he may be trying to tempt you also in the near future. :help:

I recently added a 983K with the Titelist speeder to my bag. I was planning on buying a new driver this spring, but $298 is too good of a price for the club. FYI Titelist has some in stock if you are interested in buying one and Golf Town is sold out. I also heard Nevada Bobs Downtown has a 983K brand new with an NV 65.

Next is 2 or 3 new wedges and a new 7 wood.

Hi Shadow...thanks I just saw this post now. I am still on my hunt for a putter at Golf town. I definitely like the mallet putters better than the blade putters. And I discovered that I like center shaft better because it's more comfortable for me. What is the benefit of having the shaft off center? I think so far the Menza Monza Rossa putter, Nike BC OZ T100 mallet putter, as well as the Odyssey 2 ball...all have a nice feel. Price is steep though!

By using an off-centre putter head with a single or double bend shaft in it, the putter can be face balanced as I described above. The "2 Balls" are shafted near the heel of the putter with a double bend shaft. The larger mallet heads that you like, have a high MOI OR Moment of Inertia which simply means that if you make contact away from the putter's sweet spot(Centre of Percussion) that the putter face will twist open or closed only a little. If the putter has a low MOI, like a center shafted putters frequently have, the face will open or close a lot when contacted off centre.

As you probably know, there are three errors that can occur in a putting stroke. You can hit the ball with the face open or closed, the path of the putter may be inside out or outside in, and you may contact the ball off the sweet spot. The one fault that causes the ball to go off line the greatest is off center contact, next is face open or closed and the path passes on the least error assuming the other two are OK. Having a mallet type putter, face balanced with a high MOI, just increases the probability of better contact, and we mortals need all the help we can get.

Brother Swaaain is the clubfitter at Angus Glen. He is an official dealer for Accra shafts. PM him or shoot him an email and he can set you up if you like.

I got an Accra SC75 from him (he also fitted me for my Yes putter). He did an excellent job and the shaft is awesome. (That's coming from a die-hard Fujikura fan...)

Anyway, here's whats in my my bag this season:

As Haribo mentioned, I am an Accra dealer through Angus Glen. I am not one to advertise about this so I appologize to the operators of this website. I am also a certified club hoe and Yes! putter lover as well. As you can see I will be playing Nike equipment this season as, and I cannot wait to get them in and to all the fun club building and tweeking work that is involved with getting my new sticks. As for the custom shafts, because nike are taper tip, I have ordered some shafts to made taper from Accra for my irons. It is the same thing as taking balnks from a parralle shaft and fine tuning them to the ball flights that you want to have. :D

Alright, who's the thread starter??? made me regain my interest in golf equipments during the winter!!! YOU made me buy waste money on new equipments!!! I may have tempted Mules56 in buying a driver, but evil malarky tempted me to buy pretty much an entire new set!! since this thread started, I've bought and experimented 4 different drivers, 3 different putter, got a new set of irons and wedges!! So, Mules56, should blame malarky, the one who started all of this in the first place!! Well, if i miraclously shoot better next season, maybe i'll have malarky to thank... Anyhow, so as of "NOW"(and hopefully won't changed anymore, cuz I'm broke, thanks to someone, ahem!), what will be new going into next season are:

BOM Icon V2
TM Rac MB irons 3-PW
TM Rac 52* & 60* wedge
2 Ball DFX blade

I hate when that happens! But now I know someone else I can unload my old gear on

Definately a gap wedge. Your PW is probably at 47 degrees and your first sand wedge is 56. At the scoring clubs (7 iron - LW) your clubs are 4 degrees apart so your missing a full club in there known as the gap wedge. Tipically a gap wedge has around 52 degrees. :D

Just figured most "forgiving" clubs nowadays have a 47 degree PW to give the player the feeling that they're hitting these new clubs farther when actually, they're just hitting a 9 iron. Older sets have a PW with 50 degrees of loft.

I wouldn't add another wood unless your thinking 7 wood. Most amatuers with a slowere swing speed would do well with a 7 wood, iys far easier to get high shots that land softly with a 7 wood than say a 3 iron.

Good luck, play well and if you want.. join the tour. grassrootstour.ca

I would say, because your irons only go to 4, you should DEFINITELY get another wood or hybrid. A 2 iron or 3 iron hybrid would fit in nicely there....or possibly a 5 wood.

I would do that before getting the extra wedge.

With a 48* pitching wedge to a 56* sand wedge, I might get a 52* gap wedge. It depends on how comfortable you are you making less-than-full swings with your pitching wedge, and how easy it is to use your sand wedge from the fairway. Most Callaway sand wedges have a lot of bounce on the sole, which is great in bunkers and rough but harder to use on tight lies and short fairway grass, so maybe a gap wedge isn't a bad idea.

I would definately get a 7-wood or 21*-22* hybrid to fill that gap in your yardages between the 4-wood and 4-iron. Forget about a 5-wood - the distance would be too close to your 4-wood. If you have no problems hitting fairway woods than a 7-wood is a good choice, but if you don't like fairway woods and are more comfortable hitting irons then the hybrid would probably work better for you.

Happy hunting!

The gap wedge is my money club. I'll typically play to 120 yards out because I know from that distance I'll hit the green almost every time. It's alot easier than trying to muscle a SW or half-*** a PW.

You got that right G. My gap wedge is money and I lean on that club a lot to make so birdays. I practice full and 3/4 shots with this club a lot cause I often lay up at the 100 yard marker on purpose so I can dial in one of these babies and bury the putt.
