View Full Version : Club Refinishing?

I have recently come across a bunch of Taylor Made demo clubs that are in very playable condition mechanically, but are a mess cosmetically. Particularily, the driver and woods have quite a few sky marks along the crown. Seeing as I got all the clubs at very reasonable costs, I wouldn't mind spending a bit of money to get them in good cosmetic condition, as they are intended to be a gift. Does GT or NB do refinishing? If not, who does locally?

Golfsmith is Mississauga accepts refinishing work locally...I'm sure they farm out the work, but couldn't tell you where they send it off to.

You want to ensure that you get a good powder coat person.
I have used this fellow a few times and know many others who have as well and he does great work.....his name is Chuck and tell him I referred you..........if you want some funky custom work he does it as well
http://www.golfincolors.com/
I have also used custom club coatings in the past and they are excellent but the turnaround time is horrendous.
definitely avoid Golf works and Golf smith for any iron refinishing or wood refinishing..........Having conversed to Rob Sienes formerly of Golfworks, they do farm the stuff out but do not use the tour grade but cheap chrome plating.......also the wood refinishing will look ok to start but deteriorates fast.
Chuck typically applies several coast of Liquid Glass clear coat on the heads.....just ask him......I also use this stuff on every wood head that comes through my doors....5 coats and you can take the heater of the biggest cigar and put it on the paint with no marks.......
nothing better to protect the paint on clubs,,,,,but its costly stuff
for any iron finishing.....only use the Iron factory in Colorado

I know the Boys at McMahon Golf do metal wood refinishing as well. And they do great work too.
Not too sure on pricing though. I also know that they do not farm it out to anyone. They have a set up locally for their refinishing.

Thanks Jeff! Locally would work much better for me and McMahon Golf is not too far away from Yorks campus. Should work out well. Also, what is the going rate on driver refinishing?

make sureyou ask if they do powder versus liquid paint........I strongly advise against using liquid paint unless they apply at least 2 coats on top of a primer coat and followed by a clear coat......otherwise it will be too thin and as such will chip easily.....whatever they tell you...trust me. the problem becomes for them to make it properly durable that there are build up ,ines at edges.....this is why most places that do liquid paint only do 1 coat and that ALL professional coatings are done via powdercoating
powder coating is a more duarable finish that last longer and looks better
the price if done properly is not really cheap
for a proper job the head needs to be completely stripped and properly cleaned and prepped, usually in an acid bath then taped off and finished
then with liquid the several steps are needed for proper job.....and with clear coat is a less involved stepwise
count on $50 -$75 per head
definitely get references and ask to see some examples of finished clubs before you go the liquid paint route...

I am not sure on their pricing, but I believe they use a liquid paint and bake the heads dry.

I contacted them earlier today. They said that they can match the finishes almost perfectly for the models that I need done. He said a complete refinish per metalwood is $69, but if there are only a few marks and stuff that need refinishing, it will be a bit cheaper. I think I am going to drop off my clubs to them tomorrow and see how they do.
Thanks again for their contact info! Much appreciated!

that's not a bad price I assume there is tax on that...so $75 or so right?
if you have heads with minor scuffs , skies and such that is not a really tough thing to do, takes an hour or so...I do these all the time........if you dont have to strip, and prime the head that is where the work is.
did you ask if it is a powder coating?????
in any event let us know the result but more importantly the durability of the work

I'll definitely let you guys know how it turns out. They are actually even going to come pick up the club from me too and deliver afterwards. Apparently, the turn around will be 3-4 weeks though. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again for the help and advice.
P.S. I'll inquire about the powder coating.

I'll definitely take some before and after shots and post them when I get the club back.
Also, I was just informed that they do not use powder coat, but he assures me that they will have no trouble matching the finish.

There is , it does depend on how bad they are.
If not to the bare metal then you can use several products such as Sratch- out or Scratch -x and similar automotive componds, jewellers rouge works and I have even heard of people using that abrasive ornage hand cleaner that mecahnics use.
I use one of the first two products and a soft buffing wheel. Uusally good for scratches and swirls.
with serious ones u need to use some 0000 steel wool first and then go thrus the , scartch out compound and polishing and buffing phases
anything to the metal you need to get some touch up paint, UI've had some made up at automotive stores but it is not cheap.....
in all cases as a final coating apply several coats of Liquid Glass protectant

If they bake the heads dry, then wouldn't the inernal weighting get all out of whack?

scratch x and scratch out etc can be found at CT, wal mart and autoparts stores.
Liquid Glas is very expensive and only sold in a pretty big container 500 ml or so. you only need a dab so it lasts years. I found it at Van and Truck world.
migt want to try a carnuba type wax instead that is cheaper

If it's quality scratch removers you seek, visit eshine.ca I am a detailing addict and buy all my swirl removers etc from them. They sell the products that actually work. Most of the crap at CT and WalMart aren't worth the bottle they come in. Eshine is in Port Colborne and they ship cheap. Something like the SSR1 from Poorboys would do wonders. The best part is once your finished with the clubhead you can do your car before fall too. :)

You think this stuff will remove scratches on my jeep from off-roading. I have lots of pinstriping from branches. Thanks for the info...
Had some mothers polish and wax in the garage, cleaned up my driver nice. I would never of thought of using this stuff for my driver. Thanks again.
