Sure, but shouldn't you give credit to Bagger Vance?

Welcome to the board.
Just sharing some thoughts here...please, do not take offence...JMHO.
Why can't the game be won? I think there is a certain guys that wears Red Shirts on Sundays that may disagree...just look at his tour winnings.
I'm also having a hard time to with the fact that you used the word "only" twice. There is an affect you are losing by using the word twice.
Just some initial thoughts.

First I'm sorry I forgot to give credit to Bagger Vance :D
With the quote right there, i'm not referring to the actual game. I think when you really dig deep on the quote, its actually referring to LIFE itself. You cannot win it, just play along with it. I'm referring to the other side of golf which is not just winning titles, tournaments and the actual sport.

No offence taken, :D I just love watching The legend of Bagger Vance, its full of moral lessons. At first time I saw it, i just thought of it as a Golf Movie, but when i kept on watching it then later I understood what the movie was all about.

I disagree with this quote for several reasons.
1) It is corny, up there with the it is not whether you win or lose, it is how you compete....
2) Ask the PGA Tour winner each week if 'they won' or 'they play', chances are they look at you and utter something Barry Bond will say
3) Golf is full of sappy people coming up with the next 'intelligent' quote, because that's what country type do on the club house's patio

Thanks, photo was taken by me(im a hobby photographer) I took the shot at Ayren Links at Bowmanville, waiting for my turn to tee up, so I brought out my camera decided to stay on the side of the tee box where I can get a clear line with the ball and the driver, burst mode and voila.. the rest are photoshop post processing :D And ofcourse, the quote comes from the movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance" :D

I like that quote and this thread made me think about the famous quotes...
"It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game"
"The only game that cannot be won but only played"
Something spiritual there, in the long run we embrace, respect the players who played the game(s) as we feel they should be played.
My idol and I hate that word, is Bobby Orr. He could have never won a stanley cup or any trophies but because of the way he played would have been the guy I looked towards to typify heart and soul, selflessness, humility, grittiness, beauty, basically all of the qualities I would want to strive to have.
The way golf was developed it required that golfers follow rules that they must impose on themselves. And to play with other golfers and remain respectful of their shots, etc. To do that you must have integrity, humility and other qualities I'm not thinking of right now.
When we're past the point of caring about competing we will remember whether we competed fairly or not and either smile or frown.
Nice picture BTW :)

Nice comments Richard ...
Golf is one of the games where there has never been recorded the equivalent of a perfect score '54'
[the equivant of a birdie on each of 18 holes, assuming par is 72]. Snooker is 147, bowling 300/450, etc.

If you read the North Korea dispatch, you would have known that Dear Leader Kim Jong Ill once made 18 hole in ones playing a round of golf.
Secondly, LIFE is the only game that can not be won, but played. many tried, but no one yet to have beaten life itself. At the end of our lives, we all lose and pack it in.

Yeah even so, you could have atleast eagled some holes there or maybe aced some... if someone did shoot a 54, how about the next day right? oh yea TOURIQ, bowlings 300, i think 3 perfect game is the most you can get from bowling.. highest recorded I think here in canada was 804, but it wasnt recognized since the league wasnt sanctioned... too bad! i think that was 1 perfect game, and a couple of 250s i guess. If i was that guy who scored like that I'd go straight to the Casino! hahahaha Some pro guy once told me, bowling is really 90%luck 10%skill. I kinda witnessed to that testament for quite some time, I have watched a lot almost perfect games, and its always the last ball, the PERFECT SHOT LAST BALL and it leaves a pin! hehehe

Agree?
It can be won because you are playing against other humans. It cannot be mastered or atleast not as of yet.
I do not know of any athlete that actually perfect/mastered thier sport in the truest sense.
Tiger says Hogan and Moe Morman ar ethe only golfers to have OWNED thier swings an dhe would like to one day own his own also but is not there yet at all.

What about the after-life, I hear it unlimited-play! ;)
