Any opinions on Golf Week Magazine having a noose on the lastest cover.
In reference to Kelly Tighlman "lynching Tiger"
Golf week went way over the line here.

Agree.....I am getting tired of anything negative being over dramatized. Kelly made an inappropriate statement. She has appologized, and was disciplined by her employer. Why must we continue to hash it out?

Here we are at the beginning of the year and the best thing the magazine can come up with is a noose? It is obvious to me why the editor has recently been replaced.

Everybody else in the world have forgiven KT and now this. Was it really worth losing your job over????

I think this is ten time worse then what KT said. Alot of Americans have different thoughts or one thought of a noose.

Golfweek issues apology

Jan. 18, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jeff Babineau has been named editor of Golfweek, replacing Dave Seanor, effective immediately.

The change has been made after Golfweek ran a cover in the January 19 issue showing a noose to illustrate a controversial comment by Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman about Tiger Woods.

“We apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country,” said William P. Kupper Jr., president of Turnstile Publishing Co., the parent company of Golfweek. “We were trying to convey the controversial issue with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic.”

Golfweek devoted four pages of news and commentary on the Tilghman/Golf Channel situation. Tilghman was suspended for two weeks as a result of her comment.

Babineau, 45, has been with Golfweek for nine years, and has filled a number of roles with the magazine, including editor, deputy editor and senior writer. In his new role, he will report directly to Kupper.

“We know we have a job ahead of us to re-earn the trust and confidence of many loyal readers,” Babineau said. “Our staff is very passionate about the game. Our wish is that one regretful error does not erase more than 30 years of service we’ve dedicated to this industry.”

How can people be so stupid? I guess they'll do anything for a buck. Here's the cover.

I don't understand what the big blowup is. But then again, I just can't relate to the symbolism. I guess it touches too close for some folks, and others (like me) are ignorantly oblivious.

Can't we all just get along?

There really shouldn't be anything wrong with it. Hopefully, we reach that point one day (human race) instead of inheriting/taught from one generation to the next by the 'elders'.

I disagree with majority of the people, I don't think the editor should have been fired.

This seems more like the power-that-be wants this issue to go away as quickly as possible, and they are willing to punish anyone who are not letting go.

I kinda meant that the problem is perpetuated by past generations teaching younger generations racist/bigot like behavior and beliefs. You make a good point though.

This rings true as Finchem basically said this straight out.

What Kelly did was much worse than the noose on the cover. After all the noose was in reference to Kelly's comments and nothing else. I think that if she were a middle aged white guy she would have been fired.

I think Golfweek agrees with you. I read somewhere that the editor is still with the magazine. It is more of a "demotion" than a "firing".

Whatever the thinking at Golfweek, they at least knew that going with that particular image for its cover would spark more outrage. And it most certainly did. Jim Thorpe, one of two African-Americans on the Champions Tour added, 'That was absolutely stupid. That was just throwing fuel on the fire. Let him get barbecued.'
now this is also out of line.

What Golfweek did probably verging on sensational journalism for a lot of people. Nevertheless, it is the media's role to report and comment on newsworthy topics.

I am surprised that many people jumped on the editor.

That was a very eloquent comment. You have hit the nail directly on the head.
Whether it is liked or not, comments, symbols and actions, can affect people different ways. It is important to weigh these things very carefully.
