I'm 20 years old. I am the only member of my family who golfs, and I'm a beginner at that. I am trying to find some sort of membership or deal for the upcomming golf season, but obviously I can't afford a golf membership like many of my friends enjoy by virtue of their families being members.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Remember I'm completely new (started last summer) so I don't even know where to look for a list of ranked golf courses by price.

Thanks in advance,
MK

Try annandale out in Ajax/pickering, it's dirt cheap, kinda busy with tournaments but again dirt cheap.

MK, what is your price range and what area are you looking for (how far do you want to/can you travel to get to the place).

If you've just started, might suggest investing in some lessons and lots of time at the range. Will not hurt and will probably save you a LOT of grief in the future. Some pain and patience now, for sweeeet future rewards.

Prefferably I would like to stay within the GTA and as central as possible. I live uptown Toronto so it would be great to find somewhere local. And I realize that there are probably not an abundance of golf courses to match my discription but I do not want to spend more than $1000 on a membership that I only really intend on using on the weekends.

Well, MK, it's gonna be tough to find a place in the GTA for that price point. Seeings how you are just beginning, here a couple suggestions:

1. Invest the money in a driving range and/or lessons
2. Check out some 9 hole courses (eg. MarkhamGreen.com (~$1,400 for package, UplandsGolfandSki.com ($900 Wkd membership), BushWoodGolf.com ($675))

I, personally, would encourage the driving range and/or lesson thing myself given your stage in the game but ultimately, that is your decision.:D

Hope that helps you start your search!

You might also consider ClubLink. For people your age, they will allow up to 15 years interest free for the membership fees. Annual dues are lower when you are under 30.

Highland Gate would cost you about $2000/year including annual dues and membership fees.

Also, public play isn't bad if you can find some great deals.

www.lastminutegolfer.com (http://www.lastminutegolfer.com) is a good place to start.

IMO, if you're only playing on the weekend, forget about any memberships. You probably won't get your money's worth. Buy one of the coupon books for $50. They'll have a lot of 2-for-1, 4-for-2, etc type coupons. My bro-in-law and I use one every week, and we average under $30/round playing the cheaper courses.
