:p I was spoiled growing up and lived on St.Georges (4th and 14th holes)for 25 years and played Lambton for 15. Social family membership at The Goerge along with Weston and Islington before it wnet equity.(and bankrupt):(

Back then I used to chip adn putt for hours once in awhile or just walk the course. I respected it and never intruded. Plus I knew some of the staff, both Pro Shop and Greenskeepers. Can't do that anymore.:nono:

Pretty sure or huge losses suffer by original members. Must be a few here who knew of or remember this.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

We are staying in an apartment over the pro shop on a golf course in florida.. Our balcony overlooks the 1st tee and the 9th green. Awesome.

My Dream too Dave, but ya gotta pick the right spot on the right hole, otherwise you've got balls coming in from all sorts of directions. Probably the BEST (safest) spot is adjacent to the TEE, somewhere on the Back 9, that way the hackers are usually hitting it a bit better by then.:D

I speak from experience, my family has owned several homes on golf courses in Florida. Nuthin' great about lying around the pool, when a ball comes screaming in, not to mention those people who MUST FIND THEIR BALL, even if it means TRESPASSING!!!

The worst place is to the right of the grren on a long par 4. The hackers are coming in in with long irons and 3 woods and the banana balls are flying off the roof. To avoid the trespassers and to get a mother load of V1's every day, I'd have a big ole German sheppard on a leash that extended to the edge of the property. :D

Well, a friend of mine wanted to buy a house near a golf course. He told me about his conversation with his wife about commiting to a huge mortgage:

She says:

We've got to hold on to what we've got
It doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

To which he responds:

Ohh We're half way there
Woah Livin' on a golf course
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Livin' on a golf course

Hey Dave, good advice. My wife and I were half serious about buying a property that had the view of a golf course. I always joking say I can go out & play a few holes for free every night. The two sites that we have always gone back to look over the last few years are the homes in Aurora around Highland Gate and the newer homes around Emerald Hills in Richmond Hill/Stouffville. Aside from the premium in cost we were quite concerned with safety as well. Do you have any suggestions of how to choose a property based on safety? I kind of have some in my mind but wouldn't mind having a pro list out your criteria with your experience and expertise.

It truly varies home by home. The newer areas such as Emerald have large enough lots and the homes are set back far enough from the course that it would be virtually impossible to hit the home. Some of the older ones however can be dangerous and you have to literally walk out to the course and figure out exactly where you are relative to the course layout. There's also rules in a lot of the newer areas that have restrictions such as no fences allowed and you for sure want to check them out. Still, just when you think it's safe, I was checking out a vacant lot in the King's Bay development and I was 70 yards left and 40 feet higher than the fairway and you guessed it. Some slasher hit a major duck hook and dinged the hood of my truck.

My dream house for a golf course is the Nisbett home on the 7th tee of the Lakeland nine at Westview. Beautiful old stone farm house, complete with a tow rope for toboganning!

I didn't live right on the golf course in our family home, but our street backed on to the Donalda Club. We had a pretty lucrative golf business in the summer. I will never forget the day I came home with $20 from a hard days work. At 10-11 years old in the mid 70's that was a decent amount of $. Out of all of the childhood experiences I had those summer days walking through the dirty Don river is perhaps my most enjoyable.

Still a pile of Nisbets in Aurora today. You should have kept the Donaldo home. They're worth big $$$ in there now.

I used to think it was a dream until I started playing more courses that wound their way thru a subdivision. I would see stray balls laying in their yards, netting strung everywhere (but sometimes with holes in it, can balls go thru nets?).
I can't imagine being out in a backyard standing in a defenive hunch over all the time, afraid of being hit.
I have seen guys whipping it out on the tee (heck that was friends within my group being stupid) and letting loose a stream.

Not to mention, screams of "who's your daddy" and "get in the hole" all day long.
Like I said, used to be a dream..........now a house within walking distance to a course....now thats a better fantasy....

Say you have a backyard pool and you house back into a golf course. Imagine your wife or daugther sun bathing by the swimming pool and you have all these golfers walk by and gawk at them every 8-10 mintues.

I actually did knock one right into someone's pool and there were people in it. I was 20 yards from the green with a tucked pin and I tried to open the face with a lob wedge and swing as hard as I could I got it thin and it went like a 2 iron. They weren't impressed.

Now that's just goofy golf.

One of my clients lives just off of one of the fairways....he never has to buy golf balls.

At a previous company back in the nineties I had a colleague who didn't golf but lived near a high end private club. He would walk his dog along the fringes of the course and collect balls, which he would sell at the office. He sold $12,000.00 a year in golf balls!!! Cash

You could order by model and even by number on the ball

I played Beacon Hall a couple of times and I ran out of room in my bag for the stray balls. They were just laying in the woods like eggs. Of course at the time I believe it was around $85,000 initiation and $6500 annual. I don't know what it is now and their web site doesn't say. It's probably one of those "if you have to ask, you can't afford it"

The house by the 2nd tee box at Lookout Point in Fonthill is in a great location. It was for sale last year.

They were just laying in the woods like eggs.

Reminds me of a PGA event I was watching one day. A narrow, shallow creek was full of balls and the announcer says "want proof that the players get their balls for free".

Sounds like a good story, but I'm sure there's more to it than that...

Our group was playing The Witch in Myrtle Beach in 2005, it was the 17th or 18th hole, and it was a 15 hole carryover. One of the guys hit his drive into the marsh on the right, but because it was so dry, we went into look for it...we found at least 300 balls, and we only let (1) group play thru! (we also found his ball, but it was unplayable)
...took them back to the condo, and put them in the Dishwasher!!
56 Pro V's, 44 Cally HX's! :)

It's only a dream location if:

1) You don't mind the incoming missles all the time
2) Privacy is not important to you
3) You can stand the noice pollution
4) You can handle to sight of men (& women) peeing on your shrubs

We had friends who waited years to be able to fullfill this dream and sold the house by the second golf season. Said it was the most disgusting experience you could imagine. To each his own......!

That's why it's critical to do your homework to understand how the house sits relative to the golf course. I have one coming out shortly that is perfect. It has spectacular views over a par 4 with a pond but you're set back far enough that there's no way a ball could reach your property and there is a grove of trees separating you and the course. These people get a super deal. It's a 5 minute walk to the clubhouse and they pay $2 per hole after 4 PM any day. They pay in advance and if they want to play more than they paid for, the pro shop has never had an issue. Can't beat that.
