View Full Version : Palmer wasn't perfect either

In regards to the Tiger thread where we are all over him for swearing on tv, etc....
Last weekend my brother-in-law related a story about a friend of his who went to UCLA on a golf scholarship in early 60s.
He got to caddy for Palmer in LA (likely Riviera but not sure). When they met Palmer told the caddy that he expected him to be the difference in the tournament and that he expected no less than to win. He was serious, put lots of pressure on the young lad. Palmer ended up losing by one stroke and threw a tantrum and stormed off.
The caddy didn't know if Palmer was ever coming back to pay him or not. Eventually he did and gave him a fair amount. But the point is all these guys likely threw tantrums and such, just not as many cameras in those days and most of us were not around to see anyway. Palmer and Nicklaus likely softened with age as Tiger likely will.
I realize just because many great golfers let their anger be exposed, is no excuse for Tiger. At the same time we likely shouldn't make out any of the greats to be saints either, we didn't see nearly as much of them as we do Tiger.

How about "terrible Tommy BOlt" who apparently helicoptered clubs when he hit a bad shot!!
As I said in the other thread I didn't see the incident that caused the thread to be started, but when I watch Tiger I actually think he does a pretty good job of containing himself. His facial expressions do show he is pretty disgusted with himself, but IMHO I don't think his temper stands out on the PGA tour as one of the poorer tempers.
If for no other reason TIger is now old enough and mature enough to realize that reacting in that way is a hinderance to his overall goal of winning the golf tournament.

I don't know, he seems to be winning tournaments pretty regularily now, tantrums and all...

These pros are under pressure to perform or they are comdemned by all especially the fans who want their heros to be heros and not disappoint them.Alwyas being under the microscope must be rough.

Last weekend my brother-in-law related a story about a friend of his who went to UCLA on a golf scholarship in early 60s.And my sister has a friend whose cousin Sally told me that she saw Tiger kissing Rory Sabbatini under the bleachers after band practice.
Excuse me if I think the story is hogwash. Arnold Palmer is one of the classiest players ever to play the game. To start a tales-out-of-school thread suggesting othewise, sourcing a brother-in-law's friend's story that is more than 40 years old, is suspect at best, particularly when it is completely out of character for Palmer. I suspect there is more than a little bit of fabrication in that story.

well if you want confirmation of palmer's temper, then read the Samuel L jackson article that's posted in the 19th hole... under "in case you missed it"

well if you want confirmation of palmer's temper, then read the Samuel L jackson article that's posted in the 19th hole... under "in case you missed it"You mean where Arnold stands off to the side, head down, cursing to himself and trying not to let others hear?
Yes, because that's exactly the same thing.
You've just cited an example of Arnold doing what golfers SHOULD do. He's very upset with himself, as he should be, but he tries not to make a show of it and tries to keep his self-berating to himself. As Jackson himself says in the article, no one ever hears it. That's not because he's not on camera, it's because he makes sure he doesn't unload his bad mood on others. The man has class.

With all due respect I doubt you ever caddied for Palmer so what you are saying is a generality. I think Palmer is classy too, but also human, a smart businessman, etc.
I would say like most stories there is at least a grain of truth in there, and likely fairly accurate as my brother-in-law grew up with the guy in question and worked with him while the kid was working summers in Ontario.
And yes according to the Sam Jackson interview he heard Palmer cursing a blue streak. And that would have been after his competitive career was over.
The class that came through in the story was that after he cooled off, he paid the caddie appropriately for his work.

I still don't get why all the fuss about their "tempers". Sports create emotion for EVERYONE, including the players themselves. Sometimes those emotions can spill over and are seen by the public. In the "old days" there were simply less cameras so less video evidence of a pro getting upset when he had a bad shot.
If you remove all the emotion out of the game you don't have much left. Who really cares if Arnold Palmer got pi$$ed off 50 years ago?? His contributions to golf far out weigh any negatives. This is why I defend Hogan when people say this or that about him. Yes Hogan was "cold' to many people, but he also did many positive things for not only the game, but for mankind in general. Same thing with Palmer, same thing with Tiger.
It really bugs me when joe blow public openly criticize these players because they may have made a mistake and/or error in judgement, or didn't know a camera was on them. How would you like it to have a camera on you all day long at your job and if you got a little perturbed once or twice a day it ended up in a public forum, like a chat room?

The fuss is that what the pros do on tv, we and our kids repeat on the local course. Like Jackson said, if it's ok for the King to swear or whatever, then it's ok for me.
You can still display emotion without throwing a club or dropping fbombs.

I hear this bull$hit excuse all the time....mostly pertaining to hockey, and it is a lame excuse. IF you simply tell the kid that behaviour like that from us regular players is not acceptable. WHen I played hockey in the 70's we didn't fight, even though we watched the most violent hockey every played. Kids are not as dumb as some of us would like to think, and believe it or not they know that someone who acts poorly doesn't give them license to copy the beahviour. I am sure that the average kid hears more bad language in the school yard at recess than they would watching golf on TV. Lets not forget how much violence and language there is on every other channel on TV. Point is if TIger Woods emotional reaction to a bad shot is the worst thing a child these days is exposed to then that kid is already miles ahead of most other kids these days! I can only assume that no one EVER swears within your house?? A kid is 1000 times more likely to pick up bad language from their friends, their sibs and/or their parents than Tiger Woods!!!

I'd be worrying except that I have the greatest physiotherapist on the entire planet! If you know all of the body damage I carry around, then you know know its a miracle that I'm able to get out of bed.
She'll whip that knee back into shape in no time! Meanwhile, my great compodres(sp?) at work are now referring to me a "festus".
