Donald went out and shot a 64 in round 1 and is currently 5 over par for the day and sits at 1 under. What a turnaround. Hart birdied 6 in a row! I still think thats amazing to do, almost as crazy as a hole in one IMO. Els is lurking around the top of the board too but lets see if he`s around on Sunday. Not a top notch field but decent. Weir missed the cut.

When you take a snowman on a par 4, you're definitely in trouble.

I went to thursdays round and followed Weir from 1 to 17e
Mike missed about 5 putts from around 3 feet or less but kept it close with some stellar sand saves

Just curious. Do many other people follow him?

Having played the Championship course several times last year,I can tell why people enjoy playing courses that the pros play to see how they fare to your own game.Tough course but very playable.

Looks like a pretty good finish with Els, Calc, Donald all battling down the stretch now. Lets hope Els can finish this one off, he definately needs it to get back in the winners circle. I want to see Donald win too cause he's a Mizuno guy! The course is playing extremely difficult, with the wind and pin placements. The Bear Trap is a fun finishing 3 holes.

Mike had quite the following at Pebble Beach... I saw a few folks from back home as well (they were sporting CDN pins and Angus garb)

Good for Ernie much needed.
Could Calc get anymore bad breaks?
Can anyone tell me how Johnny knew that Calc got a pebble between the ball and clubface???? Did he go check his lie???
I think Johnny's age is catching up with him...very repetitive.

He's one of the good guys. He walked up to me on #9 at Angus during the open and asked me what Bubba did. I told him he hit the lip of the bunker ( a 337 yard carry) and he said he must have toed it. Miller and Dottie Pepper drove me nuts! Every time Ernie missed a long putt she would say it hit a bump. She's gotta go. I'm going to start another thread on something that happened to Calc regarding the rules.

Good for Ernie. Shoots 67 on Sunday when the scoring average was over 72. Back nine was more interesting, he shot 1 over. Donald made a huge birdie on 17 with a tricky uphill, left to right putt. Too bad for Calc too, he played well but didnt catch any breaks. Hope Ernie can build from this.

Johnny Miller is absolutely brilliant. I love this guy. His candour is great. He calls them as he seems them. He has a great voice and he makes wonderfully insightful comments. As for him knowing about a pebble, there are 3 potential things that may indicate to Johnny that a pebble was the case. 1 - On a golfchannel show, Johnny talked about learning to hear the sound of the ball on the club face. The sound he heard may indicate a pebble. 2 - Given the situation - being in a bunker - the expectation is that all pros can get out of there pretty easily ( recall most bunkers are NOT considered hazards these days - ask Jack Nicklaus), if the player messed up, then Johnny assumed there was some impediment. 3 - The producer or someone else on the course, who was closer may have told him given him that information.
Regardless, I am glad that Johnny Miller is a commentator. He makes the events a whole lot better. Now if only we could also get back Peter Alliss. :)

I used to be a big Miller supporter. He used to be very honest on his crtitism of the players both in his magazine articles and on TV. He wimps out now. I'm guessing because of pressure from his bosses and the players. Replay the tape from today's show and realize he's wrong 95% of the time when he says things like that "sounded heavy" or he's "aiming left". I like him but he's going to have to go back to his old style.

Fair point - maybe he is getting mellow as he grows old. I do think he makes mistakes, he is sitting in a tower and watching a large part of the event on monitors. He is subject to the same points of view that we get most times. But I do like him nonetheless. So many of the commentators are far too kind in their analysis. As an aside I like Warren Humphries on TGC, as he does the European Tour.

It was great to see Ernie win ... and particularly great to see him in the interview after he'd won. He was shaking with emotion. You felt good for him.
Felt awful, though, for Calc. The bunker shot looked great ... I couldn't believe that it not only kept rolling, but rolled right off the green and into the water. At worst, I thought it would leave him with a six or seven footer.
I did get tired of being told that Matt Jones looks really young.

On the other hand, he can play some golf and has won, with this week's $$, about $400,000.00. Thus he is halfway to getting his card for next year (125th for this year was about $750K) with only about 1/3 of the season gone. So unless he totally collapses, he is going to be a regular from now on and I like him better than most of the other young phenoms.

congrats to Ernie! luv to see the big guy win!
so sad for Calc ... I'm sure Miller and Jack were hoping he wins to break their most-wins-@-Honda record.

I'm happy for Ernie too. I hope to see more of the Ernie of old.
But I couldn't help thinking in the back of my mind that he was lucky that 67 was good enough. There were many contenders that just fell away at the end and didn't catch him.
