They let go 2 of their great players (Gary and Joe) and sure they are old but they forget the contribution those two had given, most specially Roberts. Now we might lose Tie Domi as well, sure he aint no goal scorer but he contributes to the team one way or the other still.
Neidermayer had expressed interest in the Leafs, we need a good defenceman so we should take that. Isn't Paul Kariya and his Finn friend available? they jumped ship to Colorado as a package before.
This is going to be an interesting season for the Blue and White, interesting to see what kind of line up we can muster. Remember that time that we had lines from the farm team on the line up because of injury? it might look like that again heheh.

I heard that this was all because of budget cost with the team. The club just can't afford them anymore so they let me go and try to get players that are not as expensive to keep in line with they're salary budget.

I think they are very smart by waiting. there is alot of talent out there. wait until the players are desperate, and they will get a handfull of above average players for next to nothing. along with some great players like matts and maby one more. superstars don,t win cups alone. but weak links in your lineup can definately lose them.
this is probablly the smartest thing the leafs have done in a long time , this is the beginning of a dynesty.

No offense framer, but seriously.....
Do you really think JFJ is sitting around waiting for players to get desperate? The Leafs are getting outbid on everyone. I can tell you right now that Aucoin and/or Foote would have come here had the Leafs been able to give them what they wanted. It also doesn't help the case when JFJ tries to get Roberts to screw over his best friend. Before a contract is signed, players call each other to get their input on GM's/organizations/cities. Trust me on that one. Toronto is not a favourable destination right now.
Leafs fans need to get used to how 2/3's of the NHL operated before the cap existed. They were called budgets. It sucks doesn't it. Big names do eat up cap space. If the Leafs had the room they'd be signing them.
It's definitely the beginning of a dynasty, but that dynasty will be up the 401 in Ottawa or in Calgary.

none taken,
yes i do,but more importantly i think he's waiting for other gm's to overspend on superstars. these teams won't be able to fill there holes.
are you willing to put some money on it? i'll give you ottawa and calgary. i say leafs finish ahead of them both. nice odds for ya. say... $100.00 canadian.
think about it. there were so many teams that were stacked. thgis is no longer possible unless the players take drastic pay cuts. don't forget two years of drafts
i'm sure the leafs have all there options on paper , and are slowly crossing off the competition.
it only makes sence to wait.

I personally think that Ottawa and Calgary are the best teams in their respective conferences and I could see them battling for the cup. Without a second thought I'll take that bet. The teams signing the superstars have all the cap room in the world. Now there's parity in the league and a team like Calgary and Edmonton can sign and keep those high impact players. Notice that all the 'big spenders' have been silent while the teams that have had to trade away their talent have been the buyers. The cap is obviously working the way it was intended to. Forsberg will go to a mid to small market team, unless he takes a massive paycut which I doubt he'll do nless it's in Colorado. Aside from Neidermayer and Forsberg, there aren't alot of big name players left to sign (aside from Lindros and Allison), but those guys are both very high risk, along with the Leafs 40+ year old goalie. With the loss of Roberts and Nieuwendyk, the Leafs find themselves pretty short on talent right now and by the looks of it they'll be plugging holes with AHL guys and lower level NHL contracts. Considering some of the moves that FLA and Atlanta have made, they'll be hard-pressed to make the playoffs this season.
If Fergueson has a plan, he's the only one that knows what it is because sitting around on the sidelines while everyone else in the east is loading up really doesn't make sense. By signing Belfour to a ridiculous contract right before the lockout, Fergueson obviously miscalculated the cap. He seems to have done it again by not buying anyone out and qualifying the guys he did.
I'll take that bet. You're on.

I heard a rumour...(take it as a rumour plz), that Leafs are trading Belfour, Steen, Colliacavo to Boston for Thornton and Boynton. Those are the major players in the deal, and could possibly involve more.
Rafalski is also rumoured to Toronto as well as Selanne....
Again, these are only rumours...so don't get too excited.

I don't think the Thornton rumours are valid since the reason why the Leafs couldn't go for the big tickets players ie: Forsberg, Foote, etc is because we don't have room in the salary cap. Thornton makes over 6 million/season and Belfour over 4 million so that would take up 2 million more out of the 10 million the Leafs had room for. Still following me? Signing Allison for 1.5 mil is alright considering he hasn't played in over 2 years with injuries. Signing Lindros for cheap would be good too but if he gets anything more than 2 million I think its not worth it. Both are walking eggshells and could be finished with one big hit.
Pittsburg looks good right now with Crosby, Lemieux, Recchi and Palffy. Only thing is their goaltender. Philly also looks good on paper but they clearly have to unload Roenick since they're over the cap now. I really like Edmonton and Calgary, both signed key players and are definately exciting to watch. Should be a great hockey season coming up with so many significant players on so many different teams than 2 years ago! GO LEAFS GO!

A rumour's a rumour so take this for what it's worth...
Ottawa and Boston are talking trade. To Boston would be Havlat and Brian Lee (Sens first rounder last weekend). To Ottawa would go Joe Thornton. Allegedly this is by far the best offer Boston has received for Thornton and both teams have given each other permission to talk contract with the players.
The Sens HAVE to do something to match the Leafs Domi signing!!!!

If we sign Lindros, we can have a concussion line heheh.
Lindros is pretty good when he is healthy, assuming the same for that Allison dude. Next year, not alot of the big names are going to be available. Naslund and Iginla already are re-signed for longer terms.
Looking at their salary, I just couldnt believe we had only 10 million left to play with and we only had Sundin and old guy Belfour that are good.
Would be interesting to see how we can try and get to the playoffs.

I don't think alot of the 'big names' will ne available next summer. Those guys will get resigned to long-term deals or traded and resigned before they ever become available. Maybe one or two will hit the market, but who's to say they'll want to play for the Leafs. No one wanted to this year, think that'll change?

You are absolutely correct!
Unfortunately, the people who handle these things in the Maple Leaf Organization is thinking otherwise!!
In the beginning, I believe that was their main goal. Just forget about this season and next season with lots of money, they will go after big names who will be available then. 2 things, first alot of them won't be available and 2nd, as you mentioned......... who would want to come here??
Toronto used to be a good place to play, that's what players think and feel. After this year and seeing how things are turning out............. it doesn't seem that way anymore.

It's official...Lindros a Leaf.
Leafs land Lindros
Eric Lindros underwent a series of tests in Toronto before the deal was finalized on Thursday.
Sportsnet.ca -- Stop the speculation, Eric Lindros will make his long-anticipated debut in the blue and white.
Sportsnet has learned the centreman signed a one-year, $1.55 million deal with the team he has long been rumoured to join.
More details to follow ...

Its risky but I guess its alright considering the amount of money the Leafs have to play with. Lindros has been rathy healthy over the last 2 seasons so its not bad a gamble. Atleast we have 3 solid centre's now. The aquisition of the defenseman from St. Louis is suppose to replace Leetch? Oh my!

1.55 million is peanuts and if he pans out to amount to anything, Leaf management come out looking great. If he is out after the first hit, then everyone 'expected' it - no biggie for mgmt.
I think Eric's got plenty of potential, especially having had a year of R&R.
Just my 2 cents, but I think you're going to see alot of surprises in some player's performance, both good and probably more likely bad, after a year off. I realize many of them played in other leagues, etc, I just don't think it's the same for them.

There there are some nice 'special' exemptions going on in Pittsburgh aren't there. I'm a little surprised more hasn't been said. Mario had all but sold his chunk of the Penguins and was about to retire all over again. The NHL needs Mario playing this year in order to regenerate fan support. In order to keep him in the game, somehow the Penguins managed to land the #1 pick in the darft and now Pittsburgh is a good place to play again. A coincidence.....I don't think so. The only other scenario that the NHL would allow a player/owner is if Gretky decided to play again with Phoenix.

Leafs are inquiring about getting back Steve Thomas just to fill out the roster with very minimum amount of money.
