Hey gents -- trying to get a sense of the thoughts that are out there. If you were to pick the better player right now between Stephen Ames and Mike Weir, who would it be and why?

Personally I think Ames is better, why I don't know it just seems he is in contention more often the Weir.
although I like Weir better I think Ames is a bit better as of right now

Although Weir played admirably at last years President's Cup, I believe that Ames was playing better through the latter part of last year. Combine that with the fact that he has been working on both his swing and his mental game....it is difficult not to give him the nod.
If we go by World Rankings again Ames is ahead (Ames 28, Weir 37)

Very good question, both are streaky players, both seem to play golf to live not live to play golf (Family/life before golf)
I would say that Weir seems to have more inate talent yet Ames has an advantage on the mental side of the game. Ames always seems confident even if he is playing poorly. While you can sometimes watch how well Weir is playing by his body language.
Both have had success late last year and both seem to take a lengthy break after the end of the season which may seem to stall their success early in the year. On any given tournament they would be a dark horse contender, yet it would be a crap shoot to who would shine.

I will say Ames is more steady week in and week out, whereas Weir's play is more up and down.
Using the stock market analogy in the tax season - one is GIC and the other one is mutual funds.

I would go with Weir......but he's not playing to the level I would have thought after his Presidents cup play.

Who's going to have the better / more consistent season? Probably Ames.
But somes weeks Weir is a better pick and more likely to win this year than Ames.

Weir - Even though Ames, may have a more consistent record over the past year. I still feel that Weir has the ability to step it up when it counts, especially during Majors. What he did at the President's Cup is a perfect example...

I'd say Ames... he's more consistent as of late. I'm a big fan of Weir, but I think he needs to iron out his ups and downs before he regains his form

Weir is my pick. Better short game, more talent and more experience. Though he`s not been playing well lately and is lower than Ames in the rankings, I would take Weir over Ames in a head to head match.

I'm going with Weir based solely on the rationale that I want to believe he's better.
There, I said it. An entirely subjective evaluation, based on emotion only, rather than reason. I could come up with an argument in Weir's favour that attempts to appear legitimate and give concrete "evidence" of Weir being better right now, but what's the point?
I like Weir better, therefore he is. So there.

Weir during the tough conditions/tournaments but Ames over a season

I'll take Weir......
He has been driving the ball with authority and has great confidence in his short game.
He has been talking to his putter a lot lately (5 missed putts from inside 3.5 ft during the opening round of the Honda), which i believe can be solved in the near future)

Very tough call, I think they play equally well.
I think Weir has a more natural touch pitching, chipping and putting. Ames is no slouch at the short game though!
Since Weir has a green jacket and a head to head win against Tiger in match play (although Ames deserved to be on that team ahead of Weir in my opinion), I would pick Weir. Ames needs to step up and win a major.

In a clutch situation, I'd go with Weir. The Masters playoff win and holding off Tiger at the Prez Cup are good enough reasons for me.

In a Skins game I'd take Ames. He's a good vulture.

Ames seems a little more consistant, but I believe Weir can elevate his game higher when he's on.

Ames, he plays more, with less pressure...
Weir plays a Tiger-esque schedule, and has the added pressure of living up to be Canada's Best Golfer Ever!

Weir beat Tiger...Aimes cracked under pressure...I'll take Mikey all day long.

I'll probably get slammed for this, but I don't consider them as equal Canadians. Weir was born and raised here in a non golf climate as opposed to Stephen who had the advantage of learning in a year round environment.
I admire Stephen for becaming a Canadian and I bear no grudge, but Mike took a much harder road to the tour and I'll always consider him to be more Canadian. Go ahead, fry me. Also, Stephen has a big yap that he needs to start learning to control before he gets my respect.

I agree with you to a point, but
1. Sarnia is a bordertown
2. He went to college & still lives in Utah year-round (well, except when he's playing "Taboo - The Home Course of Mike Weir")
3. It's not Ames fault he has a horseface, naturally he has a bigger yap!:D

I'll say Weir.
I don't have a reason.

My heart wants to say Weir but he has only 1 top 10 finish so far this year after playing in 8 tournaments. Meanwhile Ames has 3 top 10 finishes and after playing in only 5 touranments. So Ames is better this year thus far.
My mind says neither are playing their best this year and won't win a major in 08.
