View Full Version : Terrible Question: Can someone recommend a good Off the Shelf Driver?

Argh,

My brother and sister in law want to buy me something golf for my 30th birthday. The problem is that the only thing I want/need right now is a new driver, and I was planning on getting fit for one soon. As you can tell from my bag, I am no fan of retail off-the-shelf stuff.

So as much as I hate to ask, I have to:

What is a decent driver in retail? I am looking for the following:

- Forgiving face
- Higher Launch
- Neutral Bias
- Good stock Shaft

My swing speed is ~95-105 range and from past experience I know I launch my driver low. I was looking at a Wishon 919THI head.

What is comparable in retail? I don't really want to go to Golftown and spend hours hitting 90 different drivers and having their staff hound me about a purchase the whole time. So I'd like to have a couple (2-3) models to choose from.

Realize this is kind of a stupid question, but I am now compelled to ask.

Thanks for your help guys.

The TM Burner is the best off-the-shelf that I've hit.

Take a look at the Cobra L4V. I haven't hit this, but based on all the talk on another site, it'll meet all your criteria AND supposedly this thing is an absolute cannon of a driver.

Why not ask them to get you a Gift Cert towards your new fitted driver? This way they are getting you something Golf related and it will still be built for you. I am sure most club fitters offer a form of Gift Certs.

The new Nike Sumo 5000 with a vs proto shaft is a good deal at $339... The Ping G10 is great as well and you can get fit at Ping in Oakville in advance of the purchase... Others I like personally are the Cobra L4V and the HiBore XLS.. Your millage my vary...

I liked the Hibore XL, forgiving with a nice flight and a good deal...but I would still suggest getting the Wishon that you want to get fitted for, that would be a nice gift!

FT-5 Tour driver (10.5)

or

Tour Burner TP (10.5) with the Rombax 75 stiff shaft (it's coming out in late April) but you can pre-order now.

Thanks for your suggestions guys.... I found out I can just get them to call up Jeff and get me a gift certificate to swank golf.

for the record, I was looking at the FT-5 and the HiBore XLS. Don't really like the feel on the Burner or the CGB Max (or the R7, hence why I am replacing it).

You got to get a Titleist. Last Model will last you for 3-4 years.

The TM Burner is the best off-the-shelf that I've hit.
I second the Burner, my clubhead speed with the driver is 100mph and demoed a 9.5 with the stock stiff at a club, I hit it well from the first swing.
Went to Legends Niagara where the Mclean Academy has the TM equipment and cart and ended up with the exact same club.
I would consider trying it if you are trying 2 or 3.
I always thought I needed 10.5 at least, was quite surprised how easy the 9.5 launched high.
