Normally a week before Augusta it is the best of the worst, but I found yesterdays tournament very exciting. First of all for all of us 40+ guys it is an inspiraton to see Freddy Couples hitting the ball 300 yard at 48 years young with a bad back to boot!! Good luck next week Freddy!!

But what a finish for Johnson Wagner! IT is so nice to see a first time winner. They are always so happy and grateful, and a nice story about him and his family following him around in an Airstream. IT looked like he was gonna choke, but played that last par 5 very well, and what a great par putt on 18.

One win, and he gets a million bucks, a 2 year exemption, and is playing this week at Augusta. Not bad!!

I loved watching yesterday -- one of the most enjoyable tournaments of the year. Wagner's post-round interview was great -- no cliches, just pure, unashamed joy over winning a tournament and earning a trip to Augusta. You can feel good for a guy like that.

I really enjoyed the golf course too. Good finishing holes.

I really enjoyed the golf course too. Good finishing holes.I agree. It is a really beautiful course with some pretty strong finishing holes. 600+ yard par 5 15th followed by a quirky 200 yard par 3 (depending on the wind). Then the lake on the 18th is very intimidating. Really enjoyed playing the course and watching/remembering the holes. Very refreshing interview with the winner too.

I enjoyed watching it for sure. It was nice to see Johnson win his first tournament, and it was a good finish, it got really close between him and Campbell but he stuck it out. And the course was great. The finishing holes were great finishing holes, it could have made or break, some peoples finishes. Like Quigly had an 8!! and Shot 82, ouch that hurts. O well overall a great tournament.

I personally think that other than the Wagners family, his agent, the Titleist equipment rep, and a handful of die-hard golf fans, it was a yawner.

In the previous tournament before the Masters in Atlanta, they have a killer par 5 that would put this finishing hole to shame.

The best part of the broadcast was Wagners' post-round interview where he talked about how excited it was to go play at the Masters (as opposed to winning the tournament). That underlines the fact that it is like a Monday-qalifying for the Masters and a tune-up tournament (just listen to Lefty and Freddie) for the already-ins.

I ended up watching the Jays-Red Sox game where I found to be more suspenseful.

and the best thing of all is that I am booked there at 2.30pm on the 12th as I am in Houston on business. Bad news is that I will be missing the Masters:mad:.

Last year at the canadian open i was a volunteer for transportation services. Well I met Johnson and picked him up from the airport and drove him to his hotel. He was perhaps one of the nicest guys i have ever met.. kept asking me questions about me, my life/occupation etc and my game etc.. total class act... The next day i bumped into him on the range at Angus, and he asked me to come come over to check out the swing.. SOunds far fetched, but he spent 20 min with me giving me some pointers... plus a doz pro v-1 for helping him with his bags at the hotel the night before.

When he missed the cut, i bumped into him again in the lot (on the saturda), and we chatted for another 10 min or so.. This guy is just a solid down to earth dude.. Defenitely an experience i will never forget... Hope he has more luck moving forward. Total class pro!!! Great to see him win!!

I totally agree HogaNut.

Nothing better than seeing someone get their first win. It sure beats watching another TW masacre.

G4B,
You will not believe how good that course is and if the greens are half as good as they were last week, they will be the best greens you putt on this year. i go to a lot of Tour events, and this course was in the best shape of any course all year! look out for the H2O...lots of it!
Have fun...love to hear how you did?

Belly,

You just don't get it! sorry Tiger wasn't there! seems like if he dosen't play, half the golfing public thinks the tourny sucks! Houston put on a great show....really well run event, great field (to bad Els pulled out), great course in perfect shape, exciting finish! what else do you want? if you want big names in the final group every week your gonna have to watch tennis....oh! does anyone watch tennis anymore?
Personally I thought it was great and it's too bad that you didn't enjoy it!
Hey, if you're going to be controversial...someone had to jump on it! LOL!
Let's hope for a Masters with big names in the final group!

I was not knocking the organizer nor trivializing Wagner's win, I am just calling it what it is.

As for the Masters, I hope if there's a no-name winning, it would be an European, because beneath those JL or Puma outfit, there's always an interesting character.

I am also going to switch my driver shaft Accra to a UST even if it reduces my driving distance by 20 yards ;)

Last year I visited my brother in Houston and treated myself to a round at Redstone. I played 10 days prior to the pros. The greens were like carpets! The entire course was in outstanding condition. I think you'll be very impressed, particularly with the closing holes. As someone said, be careful of the water as there's lots of it, and it's in play all the time. And the forecaddie is very helpful in getting around the course.
