I think you are right. 2 or 4 holes per round. Not sure exactly the criteria.
Also, mods, I posted a thread twice again but not sure how as not intentional. Could you please lock the other one up?

A lot of youth on this tour. Young strong backs and fearless attitudes means power off the tee. ALso the nationwide courses are not set up as hard as a PGA course so maybe a bit less trouble to get into if you do hit it crooked.

They measure driving distance on 2 holes that would normally be driver off the tee (but not all use drivers on the measuring holes) - and usually in oposite directions to counter the winds effects on distance.

yes, youg bucks who are taught froma young age to pound the ball. I remeber reading a famous quote saying something to the effect of 'distance cannot be taught later on' ? make sense?
Wider fairways will definitley encourage letting the big dog eat.

I'm sorry to go astray from post BUT...technology is the name of the game now. I was very fortunate to play with a half dozen Tour Players when I was young before they joined P.G.A. Tour and remember them banging past EVERYONE at 290yds. That was in mid 1970's but still, persimmon drivers, golf balls that might be 90 compression on a good hot day, fairways an inch longer than todays' standards. I'm not taking anything away from the players today but if a 160lb. 5'11" "young buck" were to try and move the old ball with a WOOD driver they wouldn't have the strength to get it out 300yds.

They used to get alot of roll back them I think. Now they carry it 290 easily. Golf wasn't really a big man's game back then from what I can tell. Now guys are bigger and bigger and getting fitted/taught at a young age corretly.
maybe so, I have never played with guys back then but if you look at PGA stats from the early 80's, the average tour player hit it about 260 max I think.
Guys like Dan Pohl and Fuzzy hit it long back then along with jack. Maybe average 270.

I did state in my post that there was not much roll. I was speaking of here in Western Canada. The tour I'm sure had closer mowed fairways even back then but I wasn't talking Tour Golf courses. We both have legit comments and all I was really trying to get across is that today "ball goes far" because technology "has gone" far. :D p.s. please enlighten me as to who is BIG and what your idea of BIG is?
You also are speaking of Tour average distance.I was talking of "soon to be pros" at the top of their game BEFORE qualifying to big tour.

I am sure they drove the ball 290 in the air over 30 years ago with wood woods. Just seemed a bit exaggerated but if you say so then it must be.
Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Trevino, Hogan, Watson were all under 6ft atleast. maybe Snead too.
Nelson was a tall player but from watching more then one golf channel special, it was rare for the best player in the game to be that tall. This is what the Golf Channel said not me. It was tough for tall players as they played with standard sized equipment often when starting out. Ever seen guys like Phil Blackmar hit a ball? He's not that old either or maybe even Ted Tryba. Even younger. I grant you Wieskopf ws tall but as Jack used to say 'winning breeds winning'.
VJ, Phil, Els, Harrington, Goosen, Scott, Rose, Furyk, and even tiger are top 10 type players in the world who are 6ft or taller. Els, Vijay, Furyk, Rose and Phil and Harrington being 6'2" or 6'4". Rose is a big boy but when he started out he looked small and scrawny. So did Tiger. Check the media guide at PGATOUR.COM. If a gut and extra weight makes you big and strong, well, I don't know what to say to that.
I have stood close to some and they are not 5 10 or so like Jack or Arnie were back then along with Trevino, Waston, Hogan thoug I have never been close to any of then other then Trevino.
The stats regarding 1980 Driving distances are here: http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/info/?101
 I have watched too many hours of Golf Channel Classics from 60's to present. Many Shell Wonderfull World of Golf matches and similiar matches. No one hit it 290 in the air and hardly with roll even though when you watch it is pretty clear many of the longer drives had 30 yards of roll and more sometimes.
Not on tour courses or events either. Just fun matches for some cash or charity. Usually resort courses or private courses. Did see Chi Chi hit a a 600 yard Par 5 in 2 shots or just short actually.( one yard). Seriously down wind and the ball rolled tremendously. It was still impressive though and fun to watch, black and white even.
In all sports, players are getting bigger, stronger, faster and soem older but still able to compete. Working out and eating right. Maybe some performance enhancing drugs too.? I believe this means they are getting better also. I would say players from 30 years ago may hit it as far as the longest do now.
To say a 5'11' 160 pound kid couldn't/isn't strong enough or good enough to play back then is silly IMO.
Todays balls are low compression( around 80 ). I remeber using Balatas that were 90's and 100's in th e80's anyway. taking this into account, I don't understand the ball reference of 80 on a warm day. I understand that I am off a few yers bit I don't know the time line of ball technology except for the last 15 maybe. Do you?
