So, I'm selling a used set of clubs on the BST forum. My asking price is about 2/5 of a new set and my set is still in very good condition. Why am I getting offers of $250 or $300 for it? I mean, if you walk into a golf shop, do you guys seriously expect to receive a 40-50% discount? Maybe if you asked for 5-10% discount, it's appropriate but 40-50%, come on!!!
Low ball offers I've been getting
Stuff I'm selling:
Ping Wedges (set of 3, retails for $160 each), selling for $180 for all three and I get an offer for $100. I mean....seriously, I'm already discounting the clubs by 70% (not even counting tax that you have to pay when you buy retail) and you want me to discount it more? I actually just gave them to my Uncle instead.
Big Bertha irons (retails for $1149) selling for $500, discounted by over 50% (not counting tax again) and people offer me $250/$300 for it?!?
Oh and it's not like the clubs are from 5 years ago, these are all current lineups with each respective Manufacturer.

I think the reason is the audience who is surfing through these forums: the "I don't really need it, but if I can get a fantastic deal, I'll buy it" crowd. I have to admit, I'm one of these guys, but I think those are a little crazy. If you were left handed, I probably would have sent offers of $150 for the wedges, $400 for the irons to test the "deal."

I wish I'd seen your post about the wedges...would've snapped them up for the asking $

It was actually a reply for a guy looking for wedges. I didn't want to post the asking price cuz I thought it was so low that it would set a prescedent and screw it up for other sellers.

According to the PGA guide, I should've received $53USD each for my wedges $198CDN after conversion (1.25)
For the Callaways, they are about $503 so that's about $628CDN after conversion.
So asking prices are both below actual value and for those who saw pictures, they will know how good condition these clubs are in.
Regardless, I'm not sweating it anymore...I'll just add a disclaimer next time....lowballers will be ignored.

I hear you. That's why I stopped selling my stuff in B/S/T forums. I'll go straight to ebay.
In my opinion those hideous low ball offeres are insulting to the seller.

as a matter of fact most prices posted here are very fair. the understanding is you are selling your gear within the tgn 'community'.
i'm tempted to ditch my x12's.

Exactly, b/c we're dealing locally, I think most of us are offering the clubs for a lower price already (no extra work for packing, shipping, ebay fees etc, paypal fees).

In my opinion those hideous low ball offeres are insulting to the seller. I agree. I usually post stuff in the Ottawa Golf forum and this forum first because it is easier dealing with local buyers. I usually get one or two lowball offers within hours of posting. Anyone with a serious offer usually responds within 3-4 days - after that I just go to Ebay. Frankly, I think some of the lowballers only want your clubs for reselling on Ebay anyway!

I would recommend that if you are posting an item in the buy and sell, to mention that the price is firm. This way there is no room for lowballing. I think that a lot of potential buyers will try and lowball you, thinking that you really need to sell something immediately.
I have bought and sold on ebay for years, but these types of sites, allow a seller to quickly sell without any commission, but you do take your chances with tire kickers and low ballers....

I hear ya. I have way too many storries to share on this one. All I do now is say, NO. Go find a better price somewhere else. Best example to date. Selling a members club, get a message, will you take $350 CAN shipped to BC. Asking was $350 US + shipping. This club witha shaft retails for $750 and the shaft is not worth all that much on its own.
People come on now, think about how you would feel. Can I buy your Porsche for $5000. Give me a break.
What I ask in pricing in always below market value, not above. Do your research if you wish to deal with me.

out of curiosity what club did you buy for $750US retail???
and as mentioned before if selling something, state a FIRM price ...
if you state "OBO" .... you're gonna get someone's "Best Offer".

If you dont mention that the price is firm then all you can do is ignore the lowballers. I dont think the sellers on this board actually sell their equipment for the asking price. State that you are not going to receive any offers and play the waiting game. If the price is as good as you say it is then you have nothing to worry about. On most of the BST forums ive been on its a "garage sale mentality", and sorry to say thats how it is. Does it really take that much hassle to read a pm and ignore it? I find it funny in fact when someone sends me a pm and its half the price im looking to sell it at.
Ps. I have a Ben hogan 5 wood (Big Ben c455 19*-graphite shaft 9/10)Right hand+headcover)that i bought in July, really had no use for it after purchasing my 3wood and hybrid. Its 229$ BRAND NEW @ Golftown! I would like 180 for it Just would like to know if anyone is interested. LOWBALLERS WELCOME!!! Why? Cause I dont mind playing the lowballing game..you waste my time I'll waste yours! It makes me smile to receive so many PM's it makes me feel so popular!

good points from all. low-ballers are everywhere; can't ignore them. the seller's either just got to be firm or if there's any negotiation involved, stick to his floor price and that's it. buyers on the other hand will always try to haggle if price is open to offers BUT should be within reasonable limits. :nono: simple solution is just to ignore the lowballers if you see one or let them try. ;)
i don't think anyone of us should be insulted at all with any offers. just laugh it off if absurd! same goes with sellers posting such high prices.
cheers!

The Diamana is about $500 installed CAN. I think Golf Town sells the for $535. These are a very high priced shaft.

I don't want to sound like an *** but you've totally contradicted yourself with your statements. First you state that the shaft aren't worth that much on its own and now you say its worth about $500 installed. If the club is worth $750 + tax, wouldn't simple math dictate that the club minus the shaft is worth roughly $350 (adding $100 for weight kit + headcover)

Lowballers are everywhere. Being some who comes from a car-modding backgroung in my younger days, it is waaayyyyyy worse when dealing with car parts. You have teenagers offering you $50 CASH (as if I'm gonna accept credit card...LOL) for something asking $200.
You can do what my friend does. In his message board signature, he puts something to this effect:
"Low ballers: I will accept your offer and then arrange to meet you somewhere far away (ie. Niagara, Kingston, etc.) and then not show up. I will waste your time like you have wasted mine."
Hahahahaha...it's hilarious, and he's actually done it to a few people.

You are right in a sence but, this is a Diamana with TP graphics, which are not worth as much as a Diamana on its own because you cannot purchase a pull shaft at full price. The actual, not TP Diamana is worth $500 CAN istalled at least, where as I see the TP Graphics Diamana selling for about $150 US. This is what I meant by selling price.

i'm not a fan of lowballing too...even when I want to buy clubs, i often feel embarassed if i try to negotiate..:P
anyways, tho i havn't sold any clubs yet, ive experience lowballing with selling text books :P
i find the most annoying is when ppl want u to lower prices that are insignificant..
ex/ a text i was looking to sell, i asked for $30. Mint condition, original $50. A buyer asks if i can sell it for $15. I said, the most i can go down is $25(i will not go down further than 50% of what i originally bought)....and she thought about it for a good 15min....and i had to wait for her...like i have nothing else to do...(we met at a subway station so she can see the book)...Then she comes in and begged me to sell it to her for $23.....i mean COME ON! you seriouslly can't pay me another 2 bucks?!?...I don't want to say no, cuz i'll make ME look so cheap that i wouldn't sell it another 2 bucks cheaper...
so yea..its easy to say no to lowballers....but i find it extremely annoying when buyers try to test to see how low i can go by lowering dollar by dollar....cuz if i say no, then the buyer would go "come on, its only a dollar!"

yes lowballing are quite annoying. i guess most lowballers are think "doesn't hurt to try", thus offers a ridiculously low price. whenever i get lowballers, i just say no, and say, lowst i can go is X. Despite it being very annoying, I try to reply anyways.
despite lowballing, some sellers do overprice their items (usually the inexperiences sellers). some people just don't understand that their 5 year old driver is no longer worth 500$.

I find it funny in fact when someone sends me a pm and its half the price im looking to sell it at.First of all, when you state that your price is firm, that means that it is non-negiotable. You should be allowed to post a price that is open to negotiation without having to deal with a**holes and jerks.
My time is valuable, and I was brought up to be polite and courteous. If someone sends me a PM, I respond. If I post a club in mint condition that currently retails for $250 and I'm selling it for $125, I don't have a problem with someone offering me $100. I may not agree to the deal, but I don't feel that the offer is a waste of my time. But when someone sends me a PM asking if I'll take $50 and include shipping to Bumf*&#%ck, Nowhere - that is an insult and a waste of my time. I would have to be a complete idiot to accept that offer and the seller knows it. And this is the kind of lowballing that I think most of the sellers are talking about. These are the same guys that bid $20 on Ebay for every new OEM driver listed (and of course never win one), only on this forum we are obliged to deal with them because there is no auction deadline.
