As I hit my second shot today on 17 into the hazard then dropped and chunked another into the same swamp only to end up with a quad 8 when moments before I was 2 pars away from a personal best 74 it made me wonder how many other funny/sad stories we average golfers have. You know, like when 2 years ago I played my first and last club championship only to miss a 2 foot putt on a hole then old Sunday morning instincts kicked in as I scooped the ball up with my putter and dropped it into my pocket only to realize this was "real" golf...
Anyone else brave enough to admit they are human so to speak...

I have had some stupid plays, at a school tournament was -1 through 9, then went quad quad and ended up shooting 86,:mad:that was just lovely. :shhh:

I can't remember the number of times I've pulled the bone head. I get pumped from hitting the great shot previously and then take a nap on the shot that counts. It's one of the mental things I have worked on. Staying focused.

The first time, I was -1 through 12 holes at National Pines the took a triple - then went Par, Par - so still only +2 thru 15, then went triple, double and had to par the last hole for a 79 which thankfully I did.
The second time was at a GAO public players championship at St. Andrew's Valley. I was +6 thru 14 and I figured I needed 81 to win my flight which would have been +3 thru the next 4 holes, extremely doable then I took a 7 on the Par 3 15th and ended up with 86 - Oh and 81 would have won.

I don't know how many people have similar experience as mine:
Hit a driver into the tree on the right side of the fairway; found the ball; try to hit a stinger miraculous shot to escape; hit the tree in front and drop straight down; try to hack it out but decelerate so the ball is still in the rough; then eventually stumble onto the green and 3 putts.
At least once a round, I would play a long par 4 or par 5 without the ball ever getting on the fairway.

In 2005 I had hit a ball into a spinach like plant on the right side of the 6th green at wooden sticks. I had to hit between a couple of trees to get the ball on the the green. I played a beautiful shot that hit the left tree and landed back at my feet. I got angry, took a mightly swing and felt a pop in my left wrist. oops. torn ligaments.
Lessons learned:
1) Spinach is for eating, not golf.
2) Popping noises are bad.
3) Anger and golf don't mix.

Speaking of dumb moves. Does anyone remember the story about the guy at the Parkview valley course who hopped in the power cart that was backing to a huge ravine and stepped on the gas not knowing it was in reverse? I don't remember the hole # but it's a 90 degree dogleg left. The guy was killed and they spent a long time investigating how the cart got into reverse. They suspected one of his buddies was pulling a joke, but never proved it to my knowledge.

This is the great thing about golf. We mess up, do things that would be life alteringly embarassing if at work or elsewhere, but we keep coming back, learn to laugh about it and go out and do dumb ones again. This brings to mind my first experience with an unplayable lie years ago. I hit into knee high grass (had only been playing a short while) and not knowing about unplayable lies thought I had no choice but to play it where it lay. I hacked at it to the tune of a 14 on that hole much to the amusement of my 3 (more experienced) golf partners. When I holed out they decided then that it would be a good time to share that rule with me.

One of those times where not knowing how well I was doing didn't make much of a difference. Years ago while playing Royal Ashburn, I ended the round with doubles on 17 & 18. I knew I had done pretty well, but when I got to the truck and added it up to a 76, I was pissed!!:( I got over it pretty quickly though!:D

Oh man I was playing the game of my life, 1 under with 3 holes remaining, and here was a short short shot par 3 surrounded by water, needless to say I shot a 10  put my head down in shame and finished the round just stepping up and hitting not carring about anything, in the end I put in a round of 82, stupid me If I had played the remaining two holes out I would have at least set a new record for myself, not NO and how can you blame me I was on fire and then a 10 wtf

None of these can top mine.
Still learning the game, I am playing crappy camisle (hey I was a newbie hacker).
I am just doing everything right that day, driving the ball dead straight, miss the green, chip it close, etc etc.
Last hole I am just about to tee off on a par 4 even as a hacker I always birdied or parred, it was just 'my hole'.
...suddenly I hear 'oh, wow'. I look and buddy is adding score card. he again says 'wow'. I say "what".
He says you do not want to know, I know how you get when you "know something important".
I insist now, with a sinking feeling as I know something good is up but that now aware of it I will fall apart. So I am told I am sitting on a score of 73, he goes on to say, you could even double bogey this hole and still beat 80 for the first time in your (his) life (hey low par for this course, I have since broke 80 on good courses, but remember I was a hacker).
I then stood with hands shaking on tee as I hit a drive, topped it, went about 20 yards max. I then hit out of long rough and iron goes another 20 yards.
I then finally connect only to watch ball go over green and into trees behind green. Then I try to chip it out of trees but hit a tree. Now on my 5th shot chip onto green 10 ft from hole.
Hands shaking I stroke the putt which rolls up and just misses stopping inches away.
Tap in my 7 and hang my head in shame. I will never forget it, every single shot. I do not like to know how I am doing as you play your best when you do not think about it.

I lost a 5 shot lead with 9 holes to play on the GLT. Then I lost in the playoff.
-1 to +4 in 9 holes = dumba$$ collapse.

I started this as a fun thread but am getting more and more depressed cause each story reminds me of yet another blow up I had put out of my mind...or so I thought...keep it coming...It's nice to know I'm not alone out there...

I was trying out for my highschool golf team this year and I was going into the 18th just needing a par to have a great shot of making the team. It was a par five and I duffed my tee shot, then hit into a hazard, missed a the next shot way right and basically chipped and putted around for a 9. I ended up missing the cut off for the team by 1 stroke.

Hey Freddie, I hope my painful story makes you feel better. If there is a way to shoot your career low round and feel crappy at the end of the day, I did it.
I arrived at the 17th hole at Brampton Golf Club even par. The 17th is a par 5 and I was pin high, left of the green in 2.
The green on the 17th at Brampton is atop a hill and I had a little 60* wedge up the hill to set up a birdie. I tried to get too cute going for the birdie and my ball landed about 4 feet from the pin but slowly rolled down the front of the hill back onto the fairway.
So I had to get up and down to save par. I proceeded to flub my next chip which rolled right back to my feet. Then, desperate to get one on the green I hit one 15 feet past the hole.
I two putted for Double bogey. I parred 18 for a +2 73 — my career low. But I was left thinking what could have been. It took several wobbly pops in the clubhouse to remind me that it was a good day.

Have played it many times...tell me you did this before they flattened the green or that story is really sad - my questionable short game skills back in the day when 17 at Brampton was crazy mean were disgraced more than once by that hole - of course I finally get a short game and they fix the green so I'll never truly get revenge...

Hate to say it but it was only two seasons ago. Sucker pin at the extreme front of the green mixed with a greedy golfer who felt he could do no wrong that day.
The golf gods weren't about to let me get away with thinking like that.

My latest came on Monday morning at the home course. Had a solid par on a tough par 3 just before, feeling happy with the game. Stepped on the next tee, decent par 4, #1 handicap hole. Pull my tee shot into the rough, left with a downhill, sidehill lie, about 190 out. Still into a very stiff breeze, took my not-so trusty 3 wood, choked down, made a solid stroke, good contact, ball stayed up in the wind, landed one foot from dry land. Took my drop on a flat piece of fairway about 90 out. Hit a 3/4 PW, or tried to hit it, might have went halfway back, looked nice and pretty till it landed short of the green and in a patch of rough. Tried cutting it out, hit it fat, landed on the fringe. Putted from the fringe, lipped out, 4 footer coming back. Nice 7, best part was 2 staff watching me blow up and a few members applauding for my putt....:help:
Next hole I made birdie though. What a stupid game. :cookoo:

About 10 years ago at Angus glen south I was probably playing the best round of my life. Pulling up to the 18th tee I was looking at the score card and realized that a par would get me an 85 and at this point I had only ever broke 90 once and it was at a crappy course.
Proceed to hook my first 2 tee shots into the forest on the left.
Dropped down in the fairway for my 5th shot and proceeded to chunck two 7 irons into the small creek in the middle of the fairway. Changed to a 5 iron for my 9th shot which flew the green and hit the cart path and bounded up into the forest and its probably still up there. Dropped behind the green and decided to chip my 11th shot which I bladed into the pond. Dropped again and put it to an inch. Tapped in for a 15!
My buddy almost drove into the pond he was laughing so hard.

I'll never step foot on that course again. They upped the prices again but still haven't put a cent into the place. It's in the worst shape of any course I've ever seen. It was okay when I was a newbie (just barely) but it's not worth half what they charge.:cookoo:

Oh so very true... If I had a gun, I would have given him the Old Yeller treatment. Up til that point, he had never beaten me, and coming to 18 he had a 6 shot lead, and after 18, I had a 5 shot lead. He has since beaten me many times, but that 18th hole was a sight to behold!

Was having my career best round at Carlisle about ten years ago, when they only had 18 holes.
Standing on the 17th tee, I think I was only two over, 17 was a short dog leg left par four, only need an iron off the tee, hit my iron in the middle of the fairway.
Proceed to hit my next three wedges in to the pond on the left?? Found out later the technical term is a shank, finally hack it up on to the green putt out. Par on 18 gives me something like an 83.
People look at you strange when you start shanking, they tell you that you are hitting the ball too far left (I'm a lefty) Gee thanks I hadn't noticed, you should be a teacher with your keen powers of observation I would tell them.
Had my buddies telling me what I was doing wrong, they were all wrong, ran in to a pro I knew from the Markham Dome spotted the problem in two swings.
Fixed it with one lesson.

Freddie, I did the exact same thing in my first club championship. I made a good lag putt that stopped within two inches of the hole. The guy next to me said nice par. Having played mostly Sunday morning golf I said thanks and picked it up. No one said anything, but then I noticed one of the foursome looking at me strangely at the next tee. I asked him what was up and he told me.
I DQ myself from the tournament.
3 weeks away from the dream week of golf.
