The 19th hole with a beer.
OK, so you just finished a beautiful round at a golf tourney to support your favorite charity or part of a company event. great. You and your posse bask in the accomplishment of working together, hitting some 'miracle' shots/putts and combining for a scramble score (NOT to be confused with "best-ball" format) of say, -5. Stunning!
Then at the scrumptuous buffet banquet to follow, they start dishing out the prizes. Longest drive, most honest, closest to the pin, etc. then ...
"Now, the overall winners of the big prize, the winning foursome with a score of minus-15 goes to ..."
wtf? your jaw drops and i know your thinkin' "NO FLOODIN' WAY did those hacks shoot a -15"
So, tell me, without exaggeration, what was your best scramble score and which course was it on? -4? -5? ..... -15?!?!?!?!

Haven't played scramble in a couple of years so I can't recall any scores. But what I do have to say about those tourney's is the "Most Dishonest Golfer Wins" .
I don't take them seriouly just for that reason.

I actually palyed at a scramble format tournment last weekend. We did an honest -9; course is not that hard, we reached two par 4's in one and a 2 par 5's in two. Also did a couple of really nice 20ft putts.
OUr group got the longest drive and the closest to the pin (not me for either of those, although I got to one of the par 4's and I got a nice 3 hybrid aproach to get to one of the par 5's) Anyhow, we were not the lower score... did the other people got an honest score? Don't know, but ours was
Again, remember we had a very long driver, two guys with a decent short game and some good putts

I actually like to play in at least one scramble tournament a year, Mine, our tournament celebrated our 20th anniversary a few weeks ago, We started for the first 5 years as low gross winner but then decided to make it a scramble. Of course all the teams were invited by myself or the other 2 organisers so they were all friends and we trust each other to play fair.
There the exception with friends of friends but for the mostpart there is an honest bunch of guys. As for the scores this year we came in with -12 and first place by a shot over 3 teams at -11 and 2 teams at -10:D
We also play with the 3 tee shots per player rule which we always follow (even if it means hitting 3 from the tee on the last hole because your buddy mi****s his tee ball which was needed for his 3rd tee shot:mad: )

Played in the Whipper Watson Memorial tournament at Angus Glen two years ago - we had a legit -14, and it was not a group of singles. A 9, a 10, a 13, and a 14...we had one guy crushing tee shots, another hitting irons stiff, and dropped a few putts along the way.
Wors tthing about that was, we got a trophy for our efforts...no prize...found that very shocking!
Thing I hate about scrambles is the lackadaisical attitude toward the tee shot requirements...too many times I see that ignored...:nono:

Ever try Texas Scramble? This is even more fun. Plus you get to play more shots and finish out holes. You tee off like scramble and go to best positioned ball. All drop from there BUT play till you all hole out. You then take the TWO lowest scores of the four players, and add them together. Low team wins. This year we did ok but not great with 2-10 handicapers, a 14 and a 20 handicaper and scored a +7:(

so it seems -10, -11, -12 are all common scores in scramble format.
doesn't this make it seem even more amazing that a single golfer can and has shot "59" for a round at a PGA length course?

Really? You don't think four duffers who take four attempts at a shot to move the ball 20 yards really shot 14 under? Why?
I agree. The only thing a scramble format tourney is good for is having a few cold ones (but not too many, cause we know what happens then ;) ) with some good buddies.

I use to play in the Victoria PK Octoberfest scramble each year and the winning score usually was around -32 to -36 for 36 holes, 18 on the short course and 18 on the championshio course, never did any better than -21 myself and thats with 4 scratch players

Haha, so your group had 4 scratch golfers and couldn't manage better than -21? They have a new rule now where total handicap must add up to 25.
Our group two years ago came in second and we had a +2, -6, -8, -12 handicapper. The -12 was just a filler as we needed one more guy.
Anyways, we finished at -25 for both days and were one shot out.

so you were able to get on in regulation on every hole and 1-putt every hole ... except the 3 holes where your approach shots went straight into the cup!
!!
Fantastico!

My wife and ran our 7 th annual Mixed Scramble Friend and Family Tournement 2 -weeks ago. Names are picked out of a hat 2-men - 2 women and you can't play with your wife or husband. Also our kids play and there firends. We had 32 adults and 12 kids from ages 17 to 21. The kids play there division and the Adults have there division. This is a fun Tourney because out of the 32 Adults there are only about 6 avid golfers.
After the golf we all back to our place and have the party. We get all our prizes from where people work and I get some from suppliers I deal with. We get all our food donated from my buddy who works at Price Choppers and all the group bring a salad or whatever. We have closest to the pin and longest drive and also a good door prize.Everybody has a blast and they all look forward to the Tournement every year. Its getting bigger every year and soon I might have to rent a hall.No way,its fun having the party at my place. The scramble format is perfect for this Tournrment.

i played a scramble at Forest City National yesterday and we were -10 with 4 players that had handicaps of 13 to 18. It was an honest score but we did buy mulligans three of which were put to very good use. Ten under put us in 5th place with -14 winning

Well it just happened this weekend and the story leading up to it makes the score even that more unbelievable.
For about 15 years been going to a 3 man scramble tourney at the Parry Sound GC. Its a 2 day event, with teams put into flights according to first day scores.
So the three of us(and the six others who go each year) are pretty pumped...play our practice round on friday and then head back to the motel for the usual loud night of drinking in the motel parking lot....:hush: :hush:
So we're all tanked, and a couple guys start to wrestle on one of the beds, then a mattress is folded over top of the two grapplers...well...my buddy decides in his drunken state to get up and run across the room and jump on the mattress, which is now overtop of the guys wrestling......:nono: he runs, jumps, slides across the mattress and jams the thumb on his left hand(later discovered to be fractured with ligament damage...he's also a righty:help: )
We apply ice to his hand only to discover that there is blood everywhere on the carpet.....discover he stepped on a broken beer bottle(go figure!!), and has an inch long gash on his big toe......
Well we wake up sat morning and he cant move his thumb and cant put much wait on his foot.....can you say two and half man scramble!!!!
Well what do we do.....we shoot 61...10 under......he rarely hit tee shots, and pretty much sunk several putts and made some nice chips....with the constant scream of ouch! after every shot.......he was a trooper........but I guess the 12 beers we had during the round helped toooooooo....

My lowest in a 4 person was a -21, 4 eagles in it. I have seen some stupid low scores come in on some hack tournaments too. Scrambles are always for those who love to cheat, no matter how much you are honest with your score.
If you cannot trust someone in golf, how can you trust them in life.
