Played a nice tournament and afterward there was a good Silent Auction. Wanted to bid on a number, but some of the starting bids were a little high, but not ridiculous. Unfortunately I had to leave early to beat the traffic across the city (8:30 Shot-Gun) and I did not want to catch the 401 East after 4:00.

Anyways I bid on 1 item and won (a golf bag, dozen balls and an Odyssey White Hot 2-ball putter)... Again in retrospect would have loved to hover around and pick up more.

So anyone else pick up any great bargains @ silent auctions?

I got a 4some for wooden sticks for $500 a few years ago. I had a couple of friends that really wanted to play it and liked the discount.

The charity was one that I believed in.

Picked up a $500.00 pair of diamond ear rings for my wife for $150.00. :p and a Dunning shirt for me for $10. at another.
Saw a fight at one once because someone signed the bid card after they called the auction closed. The guy that had the high bid was standing right beside him when he did it. At a charity to boot. To friggin' much! :cookoo:

I dislike those type of auctions. People lurk around waiting to sign the winning bid just as the bidding closes. (kind of like bidding on e-bay)
If it was a proper silent auction then you fill out a ballot with your bid and submit it. No one else gets to see what you bid. The highest bidder then wins.

I was in a tournament a couple tuesdays ago. I bid on a golf tournament in July that I wanted to attend. The value was $240 for 2. I put in a bid of $70 and it won.

That's a good deal. We have a so called silent auction every year in the lunch room. Every year without fail I watch people bid the price up on items to the point they are paying more than retail for it which I think is "ridonkulous"

I was doing a final sweep of all my bids and noticed a bid sheet sticking out from under a gift basket. I scribbled down a bid and won and $400 gift certificate to a chiroprator for $5. Considering I went home with a laptop and a few golf shirts it made for a great night.

I had a silent auction close was the high bidder and they called out someone else's name congratulating them. I shrugged my shoulders, what can you do. My son's school has an auction that is way over the top with too many baskets and donations that no one can keep up with all the bidding. So I have ended up with a number of very good deals. Got a Golf basket this year with Adidas Shoes, a Lacoste shirt and an Esq Golf watch among other things for $120 I think. I felt too guilty to get the other Golf basket , which ws very good too.

Clublink tourney's now always have foursomes (some with accommodation) that are often on the Silent Auction table, but are usually way overpriced and have too many restrictions and then charge you an extra $90 for a "mandatory" cart.

Again I have a love/hate relationship with these Silent Auctions.
