i'm guessing you had the chance to play there? can you describe it a lil more! some of my friends and i are trying to plan a golf trip up to muskoka, and that would definitely be one of the courses on the list.

Yeah... played it twice this year. Awesome course. The club house was small though, but the practise facillity was awesome. Course mgmt is a must... very little forgiveness if you miss the fairway. We played off the blue tees both times. Sand Bunkers have nice white sand & easy to get out of... the waste bunkers are a different story... I enjoyed hole 6... tempting to go for the green... but lay up is the play for the hole. Hole 7... the escarpment on the right is somewhat intimidating but not in play. Hole 11... the huge waste bunker is intimidating... try to think of it as water & you should be fine. 12 is a lay up... a good 4 iron should put you in good position. 13... waste bunker again... not really in play unless you duff your tee shot, but be careful of the right side escarpment... chews up your ball. 16 aim a little left of the big tree & your second shot should be in great postion. 18th finishing hole... awesome hole! If you can carry the escarpment on the right then that is the play... if you go for it & fail watch your ball carefully cause it'll do a pinball like thing on that escarpment... won't know where it'll land. My buddy landed his ball on the escarpment... had to take a drop & penalty instead of risking hurting his club playing off it. Overall this course is not only challenging but great eye candy!

I'll definitely be playing this course again.

Cheers & good luck!

Thats expensive. A couple of friends made it past the Ottawa 2-man Best Ball leg of the Volvo Challenge last year and they won a round at Taboo for the Ontario leg. Said it was great course and would love to play it again.:)

Isn't there also a deal with getting a Mike Wier Visa card? 50% Taboo or something? Think it's worth it?

During your planning I would take Nick Faldo's course off your list. Not worth it and a step short of stupid. Link (www.therockgolf.com)

If you have the Mike Weir Visa card, every season you will get a 2 for 1 greens fee coupon. It was worth the drive from toronto. The course is beautiful and actually had a couple of holes in which it was beneficial to be a Lefty!

I have some pictures somewhere of the course if you are interested.

Wow... from what I remember Taboo was The old Muskoka Sands resort... it was a 9 hole course. They must have scrapped the whole thing and built Weir home course on top. I would also agree a must play in 2005 :)

DQ Daddy, it was the old Muskoka Sands, and I also have put it on the list for 2005.

I used the Mike Weir 2 for 1 last year. Today I just joined the International Golf network as our company had a special going to join.

Hey Focker - Don't even think about The Rock - sucks big time and you'll end up hating yourself after you play it!

Taboo is a must play as it is in great shape - good holes (although 2 of the par threes look identical) and the granite rocks etc. really add a flare to the course.

If you are planning a trip (golfing) to Muskoka area - one of the "Must Plays" has to be Bigwin Island - WOW - Some of the most amazing and breathtaking views of any golf course ANYWHERE! Especially the Par 4 # ? (can't think of the hole at the moment - can someone help) - When you hit you tee shot you can sit and have lunch as you watch it fall - it seemingly takes forever to hit the fairway from up there. You also think you can hit the green from waaaay up there but forget it!

Also keep you eye out for all the Deer on the island - they wonder everywhere and are quite friendly - but especially keep you eye out for the Albino (white) one - he's a sight to be seen! The service is fantastic and the course is awesome! Dont't even think about walking - you'll be finished after 4 holes - just too much elevation change! Bigwin is a must play for anyone planning a trip to Muskoka - About the same $ as Taboo!

Golftool,
I agree that Taboo is excellent. It really is a well thought out course. Many holes have strategic options, they make you think.
I am also a big fan of Bigwin. It is as beautiful as any place I have played on any continent. Okay the fairways are huge, but you better be able to chip and putt because it is tricky around the greens. The par 4 you refer to I believe is number 6, the tee shot to oblivion. It is a 200 ft. drop to the fairway. Play that hole from the tips. It is worth it. They also have a great par 4 with a split fairway that makes sense (many I have seen do not, Woodington Lake?). Just a note, the 18th hole has a tee shot almost a beautiful as #6. I also recommend playing 18 from the tips. Your ball actually disappears because of the elevation change. It makes it a 600 yard par 5, but it plays and looks better from the tips.
I did not play Bigwin in 2004 for the first time since it opened. I hear that they are now restricting public play to a couple of days a week. It is not cheap and their are no deals available. I believe the replay cost is fairly reasonable. So play twice so the average cost per round is lower. Once, if ever the memberships sell out, the public will not be able to play.
Another course in a similar situation is Wildfire near Peterborough. It is a great course. Maybe the best Tom Mcbroom course I have played. That's another story.

Just curious Focker, what is your handicap?

All my friends who have played it say it a great course that makes you hit smart shots. But they are all single digit handicap players.

Is it just not a average golfer friendly course?

or did you get poor customer service?

East Coast,
There is a separate thread with several reviews of The Rock.
But in general I don't think high handicappers will enjoy it. I know several low handicappers that think it not a great design. Mind you, I have one friend who loves it, but he thinks we should all be playing US Open set-ups every week. "Real golf" he calls it. Last I heard the course record was still above par, I believe 73.
6500 yards, par 70.

Also, you do get a two for one at Taboo with the Mike Weir Visa, but that Visa has an annual fee. You get a couple of other perks as well including some discounts at Golftown.

My handicap is about 11. I've never played The Rock and would like to this year. I was quoting "a step of stupid" from an earlier post by Mikejb. I was also asking him why? So maybe your question should be directed at him. I would like to know the answer too! :D
