I was invited to Spring Lakes to play a round...I was wearing very neat cream coloured shorts..no frayed hems..not baggy...not past the knee...the only thing that made them "cargo-like" was the side pockets...The lady in the proshop, not being very friendly ( had a bit of a tone) said "sorry but you can't play in those shorts"...I wasn't happy telling her I've played many courses in these particular shorts and never had an issue. My friend said he had a pair of rain pants in the trunk...she said that would be fine... Sorry but the rain pants looked a heck of a lot sloppier...I understand the policy, but how about a tolerance level such as the frayed hem. I too don't want to see guys playing in Jeans and a t-shirt so I understand.
To irritate things further, as I was heading out of the proshop, she barked at me to tuck my shirt in. Rattled on the 1st tee deck for sure. Spring Lakes, sorry but you left a bad taste in my mouth:mad:

Well I could not even find a website for info, I assume they are private. I do know that either you are a member and would have been informed of such when joining.......or...you were a guest of a member and all private courses I know have disclaimers to members that their membership could be affected if they do not inform guests about dress policies in advance.
I have no issue with it as standards of dress always increase at a private course. YOur pants had cargo pockets. They let you on and the next guy has more typical baggy cargo pockets, see's you and says hey that guy has cargo pockets, why not let me on?
If you do not run a tight ship it gets more and more difficult to enforce. Although maybe a stick in the mud i.e. the lady, she more than likely was upset that a member who invited you did not inform you of all rules of dress before coming.
ps take a look at spring lakes michigan. closest match i could find. looks like their dress is similar, read how they warn members.
WELCOME Dress Code
Men: Slacks, Bermuda-type shorts that are no higher than five inches above the knee, and shirts with collars. Shirts must be neatly tucked. Blue jeans are not allowed in the clubhouse other than on Fridays in the Grille Room for "Casual Friday".
Women: Slacks, Bermuda-type shorts and skirts that have a 15-inch or longer out seam. Halters, tank tops, blue jeans, are not allowed.
It is a member’s responsibility to inform their family and guests of these rules prior to their visit to Spring Lake. If there are questions, please contact the office at 842-4200. The dress code applies to the putting green, practice areas, driving range, golf course, tennis courts, pool and clubhouse.
Exercise Room clothing is appropriate in the Exercise Room and Locker Rooms only.
Pool users are reminded that no cut-offs or long pants allowed for swim wear and swim diapers are required for all pre-potty-trained kids. Swimming suits are not allowed anywhere else but at the pool.

My first thought is that she was a beach but after further consideration I think she may not have a smooth delivery but the message is a good one. I wouldn't have appreciated the surly attitude but the message is valid.
How many of us have complained about the lack of etiquette and dress standards among young people on and off the course. Even adults lack good manners these days.
Sounds to me like the owner is just forcing people to conform to something that we all want at some level. As pointed out, if she let your shorts in then it's harder to say no to the guy with more traditional cargo shorts.
I've thought about it and if I owned a course I would set my standards for dress and decorum and not be flexible on them. At my club hats would not be permitted to be worn in the grill room just as they are not acceptable at my dinner table today.

The worst part about your story is that it's SPRING LAKES!!! BORING!!! You better have shot well my friend. The old Nazi as they call her insists also that you can't wear a hat in the clubhouse and there is a 2 beer limit and there are no cart girls on the course at all. I got caught there last year with a untucked shirt so I got the gears. I tucked it in but felt self conscience as I had no belt and must have looked rediculous. Good course to score well on for sure.

She's famous for this type of behaviour don't feel like she was picking on you, she gives everyone a hard time. Members walk on egg shells not to get on her bad side! I'm not sure there is a good side either but she owns it.

As I've said I support the message but I couldn't tolerate being spoken too like I'm a moron. The first time spoke to me in that rude manor I would let her have it right back. She wouldn't have to tell me to leave because I would already be on my out with my cash and I wouldn't be back.

You have just been FROSTED. Mrs. Frost runs Spring Lakes with an iron fist. They sold the course once and held teh mortgage for the new owners, the conditions of repayment were so difficult that in less than two years they defaulted and the Frosts kept the down payment, mortgage payments and got their course back.
she has no problem refunded money and asking golfers to leave her course. She did it to a member after seeing him relieving himself in some trees.
She is the golf NAZI. NO GOLF FOR YOU !!
