so there i was golfing with my fiancee today who is just starting to golf and a good friend of mine,
instead of asking us to pass, or saying that they will pass, some goof and his son behind us start lobbing balls at us.
one almost hit my buddy, i measured it and it was 2.5 lengths of my driver from him.
what would you do??

You've gotta confront them. It's a matter of safety. If your group has a few tough guys and can kick their a$$, then threaten to squash them like bugs :D .
If it's the other way around, try to reason with them. Tell them it's dangerous, stupid and someone could get seriously hurt. If they don't respond, then force them to play through for your own safety.

pick up the ball and walk off with it.
if they say anything, you might say something like ... "that could NOT have been your ball, there is no way an intelligent, thoughtful (handsome, if appropriate)and skilled golfer like yourself would endanger the safety of fellow golfers by launching a ball so precariously close to another group of golfers. there's NO way that ball that was 5 feet from my head coulda been yours.":(

I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt when it comes into hitting into us...I know myself I have hit that magical shot from time to time - 260 out on a par 5, go ahead and hit --> smoke one that gets a great bounce and rolls up on the green for example. Or a blind tee shot, not realizing you are there...or simply misjudging the distance and hitting near people.
But...2nd time, look the phughk out! If there is a pond nearby, the ball is swimming...I wouldn;t hit it back at them, because then you are opening up two doors - 1>You hit somebody - too many lawsuits! 2>You top/chunk/hozzle fade it and look like an idiot.
Now- if you had space in front of you and were holding them up...let them pass and enjy your day. Otherise, they are idiots and need to be straightened out! Show off for the fiancee...

I usually turn around, and give them the stare. If they do it again, let them play through. Under4hrs is right, once could have a been their one in a million shot, but they should still yell fore if it's anywhere close.

On the lighter-side....
“Fore!”
A man was about to tee off on the golf course when he felt a tap on his shoulder and a man handed him a card that read: “I am a deaf mute. May I play through, please?” The man angrily gave the card back, and communicated that “No, he may NOT play through, and that his handicap did not give him such a right.” The man whacked the ball onto the green and left to finish the hole.
Just as he was about to put the ball into the hole he was hit in the head with a golf ball, laying him out cold. When he came to a few minutes later, he looked around and saw the deaf mute sternly looking at him, one hand on his hip, the other hand holding up "4" fingers!:D

I agree, one time could be a mistake but two times is a serious problem. Hitting back at them just escalate things to the point where no one wins - somebody gets hurt, kicked off the course and/or has a crappy day on the course.
Confront them, and if that doesn't work then contact the course management (this is one time where it is nice to have a cellphone in your bag). I don't think I would EVER let someone who does this sort of thing play through. All you are doing is rewarding them for their stupid behavior and giving them EXACTLY what they are looking for. To me, that is just passing the buck instead of dealing with the problem.
IMHO there should be ZERO tolerance for anyone hitting a golf ball at someone on purpose. ABSOLUTELY NONE. Whether you are the perpetrator or retaliating, you should be escorted off the golf course and told never to return. Life is too precious to be endangered by some idiot playing a game.

my uncle hit one of his playing partner at the back just last week.
The playing partner (matched to complete a 4some at the course) finished his shot on the fairway, so then its my uncle's turn. My uncle noticed that the guy is way out on the left walking forward, along the treeline...he's at a place where there's no way my uncle can hit him unless he terribly hooked the shot or something...
so then my uncle gets ready for his 2nd shot...and after he hit, all he saw was the playing partner about 10 feet in front of him, jumped up and fell straight and landed on his face....my uncle's ball hit the guy's back at a short distance..*ouch*...but who the heck just blindly walks in front of someone who's about to hit...jebus....none the less, my uncle felt extremely horrible...
oh..same day, we saw a guy in the group in front....fell into a pond  hahahaha...so stupid...and another group...playing with the golf cart, going thru bunkers and trees and hills...then then all of sudden, the cart broke down....hahaha...seriously, what are ppl thinking!

I've actually hit someone with a ball on the course once and felt horrible about it. In my defense, it was a blind shot to the green from 200 out and we waited in the fairway for a good 7 or 8 minutes while the group d*cked around on the green. In fact, I hit him as he was standing on the green adding up his strokes. They shouldn't have been there, but still...... I should've made sure the green had cleared before hitting.

when i was v. new to the game, i hit a playing partner during my first 'real' round of golf @ Thunderbird (since re-named to something else).
we were about 150 yards out on the fairway. I was last to hit (everyone else had hit their 2nd) and i was hitting my 3rd . I pull out my 4 iron and line up the ball. ... My playing partners start heading up the rough to the way, way right of me. They were about 20 yards ahead (just next to the cart path) when I swing ... hit it off the toe of the club and sent it skidding along the grass at a good 70-degrees to where I was aiming. Hit the guy's shoe at his left heel. No injury but it just goes to show that you gotta expect the unexpected.

A few months back we were playing at Parkview and on the 3rd we were up walking up onto the green and the guys behind us started hitting up from the dogleg. One rolled and hit one of our guys in the foot. Then on the 10th we were up on the green and one of ours was walking up and the same guys were driving off the tee. One of their balls landed about 5 feet behind the guy walking up. As we were putting the other three balls started plopping down on the fairway just short of the green.
We were playing slow admittedly but we were stuck behind a group that had never played before who were stuck behind another slow group.
My theory on being hit up on, is either pick up the ball and keep it or turn and fire it into the nearest woods or water. But if they hit you and they knew what they were doing, all is fair in love and golf.

... or turn and fire it into the nearest woods ...just make sure you yell "4!" if it is gonna come close to hitting the dude in the woods who is using the impromptu 'facilities'.;)
(but that is completely a separate topic on etiquette:rolleyes: )

I hit him on the thigh, about 6 inches from his nards. I felt really bad, but my initial though was 'what are these guys still doing on the green?'

A few weeks ago we were at Brae Ben and on the 12th I believe and I was just about to tee off. I got to the top of my backswing and as I was just about to swing this old man comes whizzing up on his golf cart right infront of the slightly elevated tee box. He was looking for a ball he hooked somewhere off his fairway. The guy was directly infront of me (probably the safest spot) and didn't even see us or look.
One time at Maples of Ballantrae years ago we were on a highly elevated tee and as soon as I made contact with the ball a cart came out of the woods to cross the fairway. It was the marshalls cart. We watched the ball fly and fly and like in a movie the ball just came down right at the cart. It ended up hitting the top of the marshalls cart as he got to the otherside of the fairway. He stopped and looked at us and we just shrugged. His fault for crossing the fairway without looking.

Never been hit, or hit anyone, but have witnessed a couple of instances of full contact.
DISCLAIMER: Names have been changed to protect the innocent.
A few weeks back my father HECTOR and I were invited by his neighbour EDUARDO to play at his home course. Long story short, my father HECTOR showed his gratitude for the invite by sculling a greenside bunker shot that precided to hit EDUARDO, who was standing off the green behind the flag, directly in his adam's apple...OUCH!!! Luckily he wasn't visibly injured by the ball to the throat, but needless to say the likelihood of a return visit to his course seems slim to none.
Some years back, a truly unbelievable event took place at a local course. For argument sake lets call it Victoria Park Subway Country Club. I was with a few friends, a couple of those being just spectators for the day. On the tee, a friend who was quite new to the game badly shanked a ball into the trees. One of the spectators had a beat on the ball and went along the treeline to retrieve it. I told my friend on the tee that she might as well tee up another. As she struck her second teeshot we all heard our friend in the trees say "I got it" ....just as he said it, the second tee shot was shanked exactly in the same direction as the first........If you've never heard balata smake of someone's calf muscle at close range, I assure you that you haven't lived. As he dropped to the ground in agony, we dropped to the ground in histerics.
Talk about consistency in your golf shots.

Back in my wayward, reckless teenage years, me and some buddies were at the driving range when the couldn't resist to hit, even if I tried Ball Retriever Cart was crossing our path......Get a group of 16 year olds together anywhere on the face of the earth and at least one of them would suggest a bet that "first one to hit it gets cash". Of course we all start aiming for the ball retriever cart, but to no avail. The cart eventually gets really close (about 60 feet from the mats) where we all have the common courtesy to pause momentarily, just in case we peg the cart, and the driver gets pissed or it breaks something on the cart.....Well, it appeared that not all of us had the common courtesy to pause, or completely weighed all of the potential consequences. One of my buddies had the cart directly in his site and decided to go for it.
The results were unfathomable and disatrous , , , , to put it mildly ......
This story is 100% regettably true. :shhh: :shhh:
The ball strikes the cart (must have hit a solid pole on it) and screams off it in the direction of the gentlemen practicing on the far side of our group.
shockingly, it hits the gentlemen square in his face breaking his glasses and causing his nose to bleed........as 16 year old boys our initial reaction was to pack up our clubs and get the hell outta there, but the guy seemed too hurt for us to book it and the driver of the cart had got out to make sure that we stayed on the scene.......since my buddy was adament that he hit the cart by accident there was never any formal charges laid against him......The guy's nose was not broken but the driving range and my buddy went 50/50 to pay for new glasses for the fallen golfer.
I completely reget what happened and warn all those golf nuts out there that as resistable a target a Ball Retriever Cart can be, remember to aim at it only when it at least 50 yards from you or any other golfer at the driving range......On a side note that dude is no longer a friend, not becuase of the incident, just because he's a little punk-*** biatch.
