As mere mortals, a lot of us probably have to make some sacrifices in order to partakie in this maddening and yet addictive pursuit...

What do you have to compromise? Time? Money? Career? Others?

Those who are lucky enough to live off trust funds or inheritance or through marriage need not respond :D

I personally have to put off:
- delay in buying a place
- gym time
- some whould say getting married :$
- other interests such as hiking in the wilderness
- house maintenence: laundry, cleaning, etc

But seriously, marriage and the pursuite of a good golf game (low handicap) do NOT mix, most often.

If you're not married yet and you plan on being good at golf. I suggest you either marry a tennis pro (or some other profession that keeps her too busy to notice you're not home) and never have kids.

Better yet, don't get married at all.

I don't see it as having to give up things to play golf. It's the other way around. I've had to give up much of my golfing so I can have a wife and kids.

One day the kids will be grown and I may play a lot more golf.

Other than the cash for my membership, I really haven't had to give up much if anything at all. I work shift work, and have 4 to 5 days off between shifts. So I play pretty much everyday while my fiancee is at work. I'm home early afternoon, do stuff around the house and am able to spend time with her the rest of the day. Even once we are married I don't see that changing. But once kids come along, then it will be a different story.

I think about it the other way I have to sacrifice golf to:
- buy the kids clothes
- spend time with wife
- make money

For me its sleep - I usually wake up at 5am on weekends to get out for the first tee time. Luckily for me by the time my wife realizes I'm gone I'm already on the 13th hole.

And if she happens to wake up while you're getting up to go and asks "where do you think you're going" you can just say "Would you rather I skip golf, climb back in bed and we can have some great early morning sex?"

The next sound you hear from her will be the sound of snoring!.

I quit playing ice hockey year round so that I could get a driving range membership at the dome. Aside from that, I use my vacation days every Friday during the summer to play.

...I use my vacation days every Friday during the summer to play.

I do that several times each summer as well. Good news is I have 4 weeks + 2 floater days.

I also hope like heck that I don't get invited to too many weddings and no one close to me is having new borns so that I could use the fund towards golf.

Dating supermodels....those girls are too clingy to see in golf season.

I don't sacrifice much....just everything.

Most obviously, it's tennis.

More seriously, I wonder if I'm filling the void and substituting the pleasures and comforts of golf for those normally found in a meaningful relationship.

I found a wife that would ditch me on the weekends if I didn't play golf with her....I begrudgingly follow her to keep her from being snatched up by a fellow golfer.

but we did give up tennis for golf..not to mention driving the current car another cycle (5 extra years)
