I played with a Swede recently and, at the first hole, he was surprised to find the course measured in yards instead of metres. I did the conversion for him and he was set to go.

That got me wondering when courses in France, Australia and elsewhere started measuring their respective courses in metric and also when courses were first measured period.

I'm okay with using yards in Canada as I know many older people would find playing in metres confusing just as I'm clueless about inches, miles, pounds, and pints (if you say," Fahrenheit", I say, "Gazunteit.")
