Who do you think is the greatest golfer to ever play the game?

Everyone has their own opinion. Who would be your pick and why?

My pick as of right now would be Jack Nicklaus.....to me, he's defined to be the best because of the amount of wins and majors he has under his belt and the consistency to which he's won over his career.....I believe that's a how a true legend s/b defined in the sport of golf and maybe in other sports as well.....

As much as I am a Tiger fan, I still think he has a ways to go.....he has to show that he can still win later in his career.......

Definately The Golden Bear! Like Ego said, he's won so many tournaments and majors. He also played consistently well throughout his years. He didn't just dominate 5 years and then falter. Too bad I didn't get to watch him play but based on the documentaries and highlights I've seen of him I think he's the greatest of all time.
I also think Lee Travino was a great golfer too. Though he didn't have a great golf swing, he struck the ball very well and make shots that weren't even heard of back then.
I think Tiger will eventually become the "greatest". The records will be broken by him and I'm sure he'll be dominant throughout his career. I don't see him continuing this slump for long. Bearing any injuries of course.

I'm a newbie on the golf scene, so even though I'm sure all those other guys are great players and have made their mark on the sport, I only know Tiger. He's the one who made golf interesting for me and I know for a lot of other people who may never have been exposed to the sport if it wasn't for him.

that's so true for this generation of golfers. regardless if he lives up to the hype of his spectacular beginning, he has given the game a ton of exposure. he's the arnold palmer of our time with many fans going to events just to see him.

the golden bear is the greatest; you can't dispute his accomplishments as described by ego. however, when it comes to the best ball striker, that would go to ben hogan.

Jack, all the way.

Off topic but speaking of great ball-strikers, I had the opportunity to see Moe Norman at some shaky driving range east of Toronto about 5 years ago. I literally did a U-turn after I figured out what the little sign said as I passed the range. Amazing what Moe could do, may he r.i.p. Amazing. I was late for my appointment by an hour, but I sure am glad I stopped to watch this Canadian legend.

I agree with you all that Jack Niclaus is the GOAT right now...but I am hoping that Tiger will one day surpass that greatness! Tiger has already held the 4 Tour championships all at one time. It is still early in his career and he has already changed the way the game is played. I know that he has generated a lot of young people's interest in golf. I became a golf fan because of Tiger! I am pretty certain that there will be more to come from Tiger.

[QUOTE=Ego Woods]Who do you think is the greatest golfer to ever play the game?
As far as pure playing ability Jack is the man. He held the throne for his fair share of years.

As far as promoting the game, it's a draw between Arnold and Tiger. Arnie put the game on TV, Tiger took it to the masses.

Tiger is the embassador of golf, he hasn't earned the "legend" status yet. He helped bring down the barriers to golf being a rich, "white" man's game. I'm sure he will become legendary but right now, he's just Tiger Woods.

Bobby Jones...the era, the equipment, the domination. And he played for the love of the game--for free.

Gary Player is a world player.......the greatest player should have been able to win in different countries, different tours, different courses.......

Moe Norman. Best ballstriker ever and if he wasn't so eccentric, could have gone all the way.

RIP.

Without a doubt Jack Nicklaus is the Greatest Golfer Ever. No other golfer has the numbers and until that happens, it's Jack all the way.:D

As for ball striker, I have to agree with malarky that Moe Norman was the best ball striker that ever lived.:thumbs_up

To those who had the opportunity to se Moe Norman hit the ball or play, there is no doubt that he was the best ball striker ever, and that includes all of those listed on the poll. I would also add George Knudson and Lee Trevino as great ball strikers.

However, the best complete player, has to be Nicklaus.

Tiger is a better ball striker than Hogan ever was. :) Honestly he is and it's not just equipment. I don't think Tiger gets the credit he deserves in this department. I know he hits it offline every now and then but he's always solid. never fat and never thin. Ofcourse we may disagree but that's what the forum is for.

I think the best player of all time comparing them to the peers of their time is Bobby Jones.

Cheers

I read in Golf Digest that Moe Norman once hit 6 flagsticks in one round. Now that's called "attacking the pins!"

I like Arnold Palmer too, but how do you vote him over Gary Player?? Gary Player not only travelled the world on crappy planes he also won the career slam. Just on that you have to take Player.
