Google has just released their IM and VoIP application (which like most things google is in beta).

http://www.google.com/talk/

You need to have a gmail acct to use it though. So if anyone doesn't have a gmail and would like one send me a PM and I'll set you up.

I agree. I think chat is an important and productive tool. I use it professionally, and have been using it to communicate with colleagues and clients for years...

We use Skyp at our work. I find it slow for IM (My PC will freeze for 2-3 sec) and calls always fail the first time ?
I use Yahoo @ home and have not had a problem.

I can't use msn/icq/skype/yahoo/aim at work....well..they don't "recommend" it...though you see ppl using it...I think its because they are scared that hackers will hack into the computer/network and retrieve confidential info...

We do have a company wide IM program, where we can only add ppl who works in the company....even so, we were told that we can't use it for leisure chatting....:(

Alot of times, companies will just pay lip service and have things like the above restrictions, only in writing as policy yet pay little attention to enforcing it - until something wrong happens.

My company was like that, and still is with regards to web-browsing. I do restrict what programs people can run and MSN, ICQ, etc, are on the bad list for a couple of reasons:
- circumventing download restrictions;
- lack of archiving ability (don't want users to start using it as a work tool which doesn't get backed up);
- not considered important enough to warrant adding an additional piece of software to maintain/manage throughout the network.

I feel that this will change when the new desktops come in next spring, as I will order them with the latest Office package and also upgrade to Exchange 2k3. At that point, I won't mind turning on the IM feature.

As far as enforcing a "don't use" policy goes, if I notice people not following the rules, it's a verbal reminder, which most will obey. I try not to be a network cop and only a couple of individuals feel like taking it further.

Haven't installed google talk yet, but thanks to openflows, I am now akrusvar@gmail.com if any one wants to add it.

I think its just my crappy work PC. Other in the office don't seem to have problems. It worked fine on my home PC when I'm in Honduras.

I'm guessing it gets all screwed up with the all the VPNS and networks i go through throughout the day.

For the record, for work purposes, I use SILC. It's a chat protocol that was designed from inception to be secure.

I installed it and tested it last night. It is actually pretty good, like everything Google seems to do. I have lots of gmail invites as well if anyone needs any just pm me.

Cheers.

Albertso it's not good because you don't want people to depend on it at work. but it's a nice to have for collaborating or getting quick information with coworkers/clients.

tell me you're not going to ban gmail or google talk too...or even worse, TGN! :eek:

It's not so much a matter of banning those apps, even though I block downloads/uploads through them (another thing I like with google talk - no file transfers). My department just won't support the programs. You have problems with the app, too bad. MSN has a neat update that has more emoticons, too bad.

Chat programs, even though everyone is highlighting "collaboration" and "improved coworker/client communications" is used much more for wasting time. Shooting the bull with buddies/spouse/etc is a much more accurate description of it's use with the majority of people.

I'm sure there will be a time when it's decided that I will need to support it, but until then... :nono:
