View Full Version : What is it with atitude in the GTA?

I have lived here now for 6 years and I find myself at times become angry. I am from a small city in Northern Ontario, where life is much different and I see it everytime I head back. What i have found is the majority of the people in this city are fake, big headed and ignorant.

I say this from experience but I at times find myself becoming just like them. I say this as it is beggining to bother not only myself but my family as well. They notice it more than I do. Is it something in the water?

I have realized that no one seems to care about anyone other than themselves and that service is much to be desired at many places. you can also see it one the road ways with road rage and poor driving courtesies(sp).

I miss the times when you could walk down the street and not have to worry about having someone bump you because they did not wish to move, where people will let you in when you need to get to your exit and you do not need to get the one finger salute.

This city would be much happier if everyone here would relax. Maybe the just need to hot box the city and get everyone high or something. I by the way do not partake in extracaricular activities.

Just my rant as it has been bothering me for some time now.

the problem is that most people think that everyone is out to get them. just driving down the street or on the highway i'll put my signal on to change lanes and other drivers will speed up not to let you in. its like they don't wan't to lose the race to you.

i think people need to trust other people, care about people. and always give more then they take.

be honest with yourself and others. and the world would be a better place.

thats all, be fair.

Framer has the right idea.

Its not just the T dot either though. I find this same problem in Cambridge and Kitchener as well.

It's the old RAT-RACE in a MAZE mentality....
...EVERYONE wants the Gold Ring, and they'll step on and over (but never around?) whoever gets in their way!

...and it's not just here in The Big Smoke!!:(

Hey, we're all PUSHED...it's just how well you PROCESS (PUSH-back!):$

Yep, I would have to agree with you Swaaain. Been living in TO for about 4 years now and my patience in general has been eroded away. Definitely I noticed a difference in the service/hospitality industry in TO compared with smaller cities. Having brunch back in my hometown was definitely an amazing experience because every single server/staff was soooo friendly and nice. Here in TO you may have just a small handful of friendly servers and the rest are just indifferent.

Very true bro. I'm in Toronto, or Canada for that matter, for almost 9 years now. It is NOT the same friendly city it was anymore. Not even close.

Totally agree...lived in toronto all my life until last summer, when my family and I moved to Burlington. What a difference, besides very little crime, compared to Toronto...everyone says hi in our neighbourhood...people hold doors open for you...say thank you and aside from these benefits from moving out of Toronto...the golf is better and cheaper:rofl:

If you pick up any Urban Sociology book and concentrate on sections regarding anonymity, the big city attitude can be better understood.

"Dog eat Dog" , "If you can't stand the heat, get your *** out the kitchen" ,
"Moving on a fast train" , "rat race" , "stick and move" .........you know, that old chestnut.

That's the way cities are, and there's not much you can do about it. Places are crowded, and people have places to go and people to see. Work is stressful for many. All of this builds up into attitude, anger, frustration, etc.

how many times can you hold the door open for someone (not get a thank you in return)

let someone in on the highway (only to see them cut in and out ahead and having to let them in AGAIN)

or just being curtious to a stranger/acquaintance

before you get FED up with being "nice" to others? I'm still not that jaded yet, but eventually it eats at you and you'll crack and be one of those that speeds up, cuts people off and lets doors slam on old ladies behind you.

I agree with the one about holding doors open and that. I hate it when you do and you don't get a thank your or even a smile. It is like well F U then, and next time I will close the door on you. Or when you smile at someone being courteous, and you get a dirty look or something. Just isn't the same, even in the hospitality industry, no matter how nice you are to people, you still get treated like crap, esp for things out of your control. I just love those kind of people.

can't help but notice everyday these shootings around the T.O area. one thing i noticed nowadays are the young kids growing up without any manners whatsoever and no discipline at all. sad but true. there are still great people and neighbours around at least. don't really know who to blame but times sure have changed.

I still do everything to be "nice" ...only can set a good example for yourself. all you can hope for is one parent pointing to their kid that decency is one person at a time. Even if the world around you deteriorates faster, you should be one of the good guys....

I try to be nice and courteous, but I have to admit, sometimes, I'm grumpy. You have enough people that's grumpy at the same time in the same city and voila!

I don't expect much from city dwellers, but when you do come across nice people, it makes your day and then you want to be nice to someone back. :)

I second that.....Toronto is a "friendly" city if you compare it to other large cities in the world. I've lived in Toronto for 17 years and have had the chance to travel, work and live (short term) in many other large Urban Centers in the States, Asia, and Australia. Toronto is by far still the best when in comes to people (I know many of you will disagree).

That's the way cities are, and there's not much you can do about it. Places are crowded, and people have places to go and people to see. Work is stressful for many. All of this builds up into attitude, anger, frustration, etc.

This is stereotyping, but having travelled to a few other major cities, I find Toronto less superficial than places like Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo or NYC. People are more casual and you can easily tell by our way of dress. I also don't know that many people who have gone through plastic surgery, where it is more common in cities like Vancouver and LA (so I've been told). AnnikaFan, is that true about Vancouver??

T.O. is a great city and I love living here. We're the United Nations really. Where else will you see a golf course full of different races other than here?:D Even my family who visited recently from Chicago found this such an eclectic mix of people just like us TGN folks!

Must say that I hate the winter and the taxes!!

I find it helps to visit other large(r) cities around the world to gain some perspective. I just spent the last few days in NYC, and I love the perspective spending time in that city gives me. I try to go there as often as possible, as I find it frees me from the usual routine of Toronto and gives me a broader perspective of what cities are and can be. Certainly whenever I go away I end up missing and loving Toronto. I'd love to be able to live in many "global" cities, but Toronto will always be my home.

I grew up in Barrie most of my life until I left for college. I would take a little bit of road rage every now and then over constant ignorance and narrowmindedness of a smaller town.

As for comparing attitudes in other cities -- everyone will defend where they are from. Its my experience that most of the rest of Canada dislikes Toronto, afterall, we are the centre of the world right? I don't get this stuff about NYC, I love the city and find the people there more willing to help (and definitely more laid back) than people in Toronto. I am talking people in Manhattan, can't speak for the burbs.

Try going to places like SD or Denver... You have NO idea how good you have it...
