Just came home from a visit to YVR to play some golf, and I was pretty impressed by some courses / bargains, and not impressed by others. Thought I'd share so that those heading out could benefit.

My favorite courses:
1) Northlands - A municipal course is my favorite course? Yes. At the base of Mount Seymour, set amidst grand old trees and with tons of wildlife on the course, with a beautiful view of Vancouver and Burrard Inlet on some holes. I saw at least 20 deer on various holes during the two rounds I played there.

Dirt cheap. $39 before 7, $45 before 8, 50 something after. Fairways and greens in amazing condition, and challenging back nine (3 par fives, 3 par 3s, and 3 par 4s).

2) Northview's Ridge course - Canadian Bell Open played here a while back. In Surrey, but the course itself is gorgeous, and well worth the $80+ I paid to play it.

3) Mayfair Lakes - water in play in 14 of 18 holes, and in excellent condition throughout.

Decent courses:

1) Fraserview - cheap muni course in the middle of the city, long enough, in good condition. Really hidden admist large traffic arteries. You can't really hear all the traffic here.

Disappointments:

These courses are only disappointments because of the hype:

1) Shaunnessy - Well, they were prepping for the tournament, and the rough was looooonnnngggg. Lost many balls that just rolled in the rough. Wasn't that impressed with the layout, given the cost. I was lucky enough to know a member, and had a better time at the pro shop buying tourney merchandise.

2) Furry Creek - what a silly golf course. Short, narrow, and expensive (for what you get). However, that par three into Howe Sound is amazing, and worth the price of admission alone.

The worst course I played: Riverway - ugly, bad condition, nothing positive to say here.

But I'd definately play Northlands on a regular basis if I lived there. Beautiful course.

On a side note, Vancouver is loaded with green space, super cheap driving ranges (1/2 the cost of Toronto ranges), and better golf shops that Toronto. Add to that the fact that you can play all year round, and it sounds pretty sweet.

Thanks for the heads-up, we're headed that way in mid-September, although the bulk of our (Golf) trip will be to Vancouver Island

Know anything about the UBC course, hear it's nice/long/challenging?

Or another track called The Falls?

Another TGN member (AnnikaFan) also recommended Westwood Plateau, and Swan-E-Set...WP looks pricey, SES looks really nice and more affordable?

Played Shaunnessy a few times now and I like it a lot...didn't have a chance to go this summer pre Open conditions but I usually avoid it when it's set up like that..Just like I avoided the Abby last year.

UBC is a GREAT course. played it over x-mas holidays last year.

that's it for BC golf but intend to go back and try more

yea...tho Westwood Plateau is expensive, I think its worth checking it out at least once...

some signature holes there....and ranked one of the top 5 best service in North America or something..

Swan-E-Set is nice too...2 courses there, one links course..which i think is for members, and the other one is for public..

another course i heard that's really good and really posh is Capilano GCC.

A couple courses down in Surrey/Whiterock is nice too. Peace Portal (if you like really bumpy/hilly course....the only time your ball will get a flat lie is on the tee box...

and also Morgan Creek....just watch out that you don't hit the monster houses surrounding the golf course!

I used to live in Burnaby and I agree that the golf their in terms of pricing and value is better than toronto. A $50 dollar course over there would cost you $80 here easily.

I played northlands...i share the same enthusisasm as you. Love that course and its very challenging.
Furry Creek is the most beautiful and scenic course ive ever played....Hole #1 is elevated and your teeing off with the ocean and mountains in the horizon....mind you it is also the most unfair course as it is narrow and 1 foot off the fairway means you will have to take a drop.
I agree with your assessments of fraserview and riverway although i dont riverway is as bad for twilight as i used to live 2 min from it and walked on all the time for twilight. Have you tried Langara?...not bad for a inner city course.

I've also played The Falls and its very nice too but the one hidden gem that i discovered is called Sandpiper. Beautiful course and immaculately kept. Very unique as it also as an airplane landing strip on it and very scenic as it is also on a lake. If anyone goes to vancouver, you need to try it out.
