Just came home from a visit to YVR to play some golf, and I was pretty impressed by some courses / bargains, and not impressed by others. Thought I'd share so that those heading out could benefit.
My favorite courses:
1) Northlands - A municipal course is my favorite course? Yes. At the base of Mount Seymour, set amidst grand old trees and with tons of wildlife on the course, with a beautiful view of Vancouver and Burrard Inlet on some holes. I saw at least 20 deer on various holes during the two rounds I played there.
Dirt cheap. $39 before 7, $45 before 8, 50 something after. Fairways and greens in amazing condition, and challenging back nine (3 par fives, 3 par 3s, and 3 par 4s).
2) Northview's Ridge course - Canadian Bell Open played here a while back. In Surrey, but the course itself is gorgeous, and well worth the $80+ I paid to play it.
3) Mayfair Lakes - water in play in 14 of 18 holes, and in excellent condition throughout.
Decent courses:
1) Fraserview - cheap muni course in the middle of the city, long enough, in good condition. Really hidden admist large traffic arteries. You can't really hear all the traffic here.
Disappointments:
These courses are only disappointments because of the hype:
1) Shaunnessy - Well, they were prepping for the tournament, and the rough was looooonnnngggg. Lost many balls that just rolled in the rough. Wasn't that impressed with the layout, given the cost. I was lucky enough to know a member, and had a better time at the pro shop buying tourney merchandise.
2) Furry Creek - what a silly golf course. Short, narrow, and expensive (for what you get). However, that par three into Howe Sound is amazing, and worth the price of admission alone.
The worst course I played: Riverway - ugly, bad condition, nothing positive to say here.
But I'd definately play Northlands on a regular basis if I lived there. Beautiful course.
On a side note, Vancouver is loaded with green space, super cheap driving ranges (1/2 the cost of Toronto ranges), and better golf shops that Toronto. Add to that the fact that you can play all year round, and it sounds pretty sweet.
