Played this morning at a course some friends booked... anyway, it was North of the city and the Fog was terrible BUT the Starter was still sending people off  . Our tee time was at 7:30AM and by this time the Fog had lifted where you could actually see the fairway. I thought it was dangerous teeing off even 15 minutes before our tee time...

Does anyone know what the rules are related to Fog and visibility? Shouldn't the starter only be sending groups out if you can see the fairway? I think the course just wanted to push as many people out there as they could - $$$.

I've seen this done before too, and I've always felt more than a bit unsafe. Hold until the fog lifts enough to see where the longest driver in your group can hit to on their best day would be the best way, I think.

I played a few years back (New Dundee) when the fog was real thick. They waited aslong as possible and many of the early tee-offs bailed. Of the ones that stayed they sent us of almost an hour late and with a good 10-15 min apart. The starter would actually drive down to check before we were sent on our way.

With such a delay we all had a huge gallery watching our tee-offs trying to help determine where the ball "Should" be.

Where I was this morning they held us back for 20 minutes or so until the fog lifted enough that we could see 300 yards. No problem, everyone very patient, and by the time we were on the 2nd the fog had gone.

Played Paris this morning.

Staff let players start on time cause they didn't know better. Surprised? Not me. They have no clue over there. They didn't even open the halfway house and the food and bev manager said she had to fight with the powers that be to get the money to buy beer to sell.

And some y'all wonder why they can't make money. :nono:

Can you say "mismanaged"? :nono:

It's definitely a good hike from the GTA. Do you think Paris ON is really worth the drive for a round of Golf?

IMOA they should hold you till the fog lifts..The problem with the fog is that, all groups that dont tee off are now backing up the rest of the day. It's not too bad if you have one of the first tee offs in the morning but if you have a later tee off and they are now running 40 minutes late, then you are upset that the day is slow.

When I was a member at a course in the hills here, we would often have to tee off in the fog. It wasnt that big a deal if you knew the course and as members we did. They also had someone in the middle of the airway to hear the balls land and give the go ahead to the next group teeing off.

If it is a long delay many courses will start half of the early groups being delayed on #10 when there is a fog or frost delay. At least that way only your back 9 is slow and the later tee offs aren't backed up as badly. Not so good if you're one of the early groups though.

I agree, as long as you can see the first 50 yards or and the course spaces the tee off times more. If you only tee off every 15 minutes until the fog clears, you should never have a problem (unless you slice one off the first tee into the parking lot).

They also had someone in the middle of the fairway to hear the balls land and give the go ahead to the next group teeing off. I guess the marshalls were familiar with your game and knew where it was safe to stand (sorry, I just couldn't resist). :D

But I meant 3/4 of the way down the first fairway in the rough on one side of the hole. But htanks for chirping in there.:D

The thing I like about fog is, that when we play that early, it's always a blast telling the guys behind you that the flag is in the back right corner of the green when it's really in the front left.

the only good thing is if you're running late, then you're in the clear with the fog delay. you can warm up chip and putt around. if you've got plans after though, that's when we run into trouble.
