You might want to consider a Sky Caddie instead of a Range Finder. With the prices on SC's coming down, IMO they provided a lot more information than a Range Finder.
As Natalie says, I don't like to play without it now.

I bought the Brunton rangefinder from CT and it works wonderfully well.
Returned a Bushnell X500 that I could not read a pin over 150 yards with. The Brunton gets me any target I could want to get.
Only thing is it takes a funky battery that costs $15... but the battery hasn't run out yet after 2 months of use.

I'm going to have to check this out...the reviews I've read online seem pretty favourable

PS, I saw NB selling the Brunton model for $249.99... It's really a bargain getting it from CT.

So the Brunton doesn't come with batteries? What kind of batteries does it take?

From what was posted in another thread discussing this:
3 volt cr2 battery.
Battery tip - The Source sells these batteries for $15. Get the $5 "warranty" and you get 2 free exchanges (I think in the next 2 years)... I asked the guy if the battery has to be defective or if you can exchange it if it is simply discharged. His response - *nod* "we don't check". So 3 batteries for $20 sounds a bit more reasonable.

Couldn't resist - I have a Nikon 440 now and it is good - sometimes. Very finicky on some flags and can never get flags in still conditions outside 180 or 190 yds. So I saw this post and stopped in at CT at Main and Danforth and grabbed the last one. Initial tesing is good - side by side comparison with my 440 showed better "target" readings in all cases - targets being cars, fences and a few flags on peoples porches. It has modes for Rain, Reflectiv, >150 and Std. Rain mode was good in twilight, nearly thunderstorm darkness over 45 yards - Nikon - nothing. In Std mode, got most that I looked at from 25 to 185 yards in the dark twilight and only got about half of the targest from the Nikon in 45-120 range - nothing over 120 could be gotten. Reflectiv was very close to std and >150 seemed OK for , er >150 yards.
Hopefully it will pass the test this weekend on the course - if not, returns counter, here we come. But at $149 and given initial testing, I think this is a good one. :hyper:

For funky batteries try ebay. You can probably get 10 for that $15 :)

Batteries for these guys are not really an issue - I have been using my Nikon 440 for over a year and the battery indicator still shows good - I guess it is dependent on how much you use it during a round. Watch some of the far east eBay batteries as well - they may be cheap but some of them can be dangerous - a friend with Canon dSLR bought such a battery and noticed his camera getting hot one day - took out battery - smoking - had he waited longer it might have been very bad .....
Best bet sounds like the Radio Shack/Source guarantee thingy previoulsy mentioned .....

i have a bushnell. The only problem i have is that you have to be really steady when you're using it. unless you're extremely steady. forget about using it for flag.

I picked up the brunton...so far just testing it out in front of my house, it's pretty solid. I'm able to pick out a stop sign post which are pretty thin, but it takes a couple of shots just to make sure i'm not hitting something behind...i'm going to try it out on the course and range this weekend.

What type of Bushnell do you have? I have the 1500 and I am shocked at how well it targets even with my wicked shakey hands.

Played Lakeview with my new Brunton today - definitely better than my Nikon - getting flags (limp with no wind - no jokes please) all day and there is a neat "quality" indicator in the viewfinder - coupled with the different modes that all have benefits, I am impressed - it passe dthe test for me and since the Nikon also uses those expensive CR2 batteries, I already had a stash of 'em. So I recommend the Brunton for CT.

Today at the TGN event at Copetown, I put the CT Brunton rangefinder through it's paces and it performed admirably. Admitted the weather and light was good but I was very impressed with teh reads I got - it really is a good device for $149. Only criticism, aside from wonky, potentially expensive battery, is that the riubberized coating on part of the unit is rather fragile in that it started to rub off in play today - no biggie for me (no returns now anyway), but if you prefer equipment that keeps it new look, this unit is probably not it - looks a bit ratty today :-( But for me it is a keeper anyway.

is there any indication on how long the batteries last for this unit i.e. how many rounds on average. at $15/per battery it could become expensive. i dont understand why they didnt go with standard AA's where you can easily get rechargables.

Hi Seabird - for the Brunton, I have no idea since I have only had it for a week. My Nikon was about 40 -45 rounds of golf on a battery. The battery is a pain, but there are cheaper options (as well as rechagreable options) on eBay. I previously had cameras that used this battery so I had a bit of a stash but am now on my last one :(

Still going strong on the 1st battery after a month and a half. Low battery indicator hasn't come on yet. Approx 10 rounds and twice as many range sessions.

has anyone found a good source for these batteries on ebay. there's lots of choices for vendors but i am a little suspect on batteries via ebay. i did the source today and bought the 2 battery insurance for $5...good deal, but ebay would be even cheaper subject to reliability.

Hi Seabird, I am seeing the CR2's online at Vistek.ca (actual storefront at Queen and Sumach/Parliament and in Mississauga on Mavis Road) for $12.99 CAD for 2 and this is REAL Varta battery product, a recognized photography brand - at this price I believe it beats eBay deals for non-rechargeable CR2's when you factor in postage etc.

how easy/difficult is it to use this for determining yardage to hazzards, front/back of green etc. i.e more trouble than its worth in a practical sence or takes too much time/effort.

Easy, but is dependent on size of target - bunkers good, trees good invisible water, bad :-) Takes me 2-3 seconds for a read for most of what I am looking at - ocassionally need to re-check to ensure that I am not getting an object behind (or in front of) the intended target. Gets to be a very quick intuitive process after a few reads.

Just picked one up and works great so far in testing. Tried a Bushnell 1000 ARC and didn't like the display...harder to read with my sunglasses on. Looked at the new Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 Slope edition and it's a lot bigger which makes it inconvenient on the course. Also from the manual, looks like you have to dial in the slope, which seems difficult to estimate. Any one find the Pinseeker Slope edition easy to calculate slope and accurate on the course? Just wondering if it's worth paying the extra $$$?

i ended up returning mine today...didn't even use it. for now i am quite happy with using greenfinder on my BB. i like the idea of having FCB info and yardages to hazards w/o having to do anything. while i'm sure i'm sacraficing some accuracy, i just know i wouldn't use the rangefinder regularly.

Battery died yesterday :(
2 months, estimate 15 rounds and 15 range sessions. Not too bad - I guess. I've gone through 6 gloves in the same time period :)
