Hey people!

I'm going into accounting and finance in university and I figured it was time to learn how to golf - for obvious reasons.
I've been to the driving range about 5 times now and I've spent about an hour there each time. I can hit the ball about 200 yards on a good swing (I think I was using a 3 wood), but it seems to be random as sometimes I'm still missing the ball completely when I swing and most of the other time I'm hitting bad shots (grounders or off the the sides).
I'm in the market for instructors right now and also a golf set so that I can have a consistent set of clubs to use instead of renting different clubs each time. I'm here pretty much to get an introduction to the game and learn the different things there are to know about the game of golf!

Cheers,

Robin

Welcome Robin. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.

If it's instruction you are looking for then personally, I would recommend a couple of options to you.
1) Get out to a course near you. You said you are in Mississauga, so I know there is a teaching academy at Braeben Golf Course. Don't know much about the quality of lessons there, but they have a pretty decent setup.
2) if you want to hit the links running next spring, then I might recommend the DiMarco Golf Dome by the airport. Indoor teaching through the winter and your swing should be in pretty good shape come spring.

Of course you could just get out there and hack the ball around and hope for the best but personally, I would highly recommend some lessons from a certifed teaching pro.

RobinIf you stick with it... you will find it a game you will love and have passion for...

About missing the ball... here's some tips I used as a beginner and sometimes still do...

...Keep your head as close to santionary as possible and keep your eyes on the ball...
...If your having problems with contact, try this drill - Start off at 1/4 swing... keep hitting balls until you feel consistent... Go to 1/2 a swing... continue to 3/4 swing... etc. Hopefully, Muscle memory will take over the more you do this. Typically the swing path breaks down the closer it gets to a full swing.
...Talk to a swing doctor ASAP... Before you learn some bad habits.

TricksX, if you don't listen to any other tips you get, listen to Mike on his last one. Get some help from an instruction before you "learn" some bad habits on your own. Worth every penny, and you will progress much faster. Just make sure you get a fairly reputable instructor.

Nice avatar, BTW :D

I'm gonna buy some clubs tomororw (cheap 11 piece set for 100 dollars) and I'll try out this drill if the driving ranges are open.
I'll ask if they have a swing doctor available, cuz i know the newer you are to the game the easier it is to learn both the good AND bad habits.

Welcome TricksX

Where are you getting your new set? Have you looked at the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here? Like Janet16 says, it's better to have a good set of used clubs then a new set of not so good clubs...

Like Janet16 says, it's better to have a good set of used clubs then a new set of not so good clubs...I saw a set of clubs at the Real Canadian Superstore on Winston Churchill and 401 (Argentia), but I cant remember the name. It's an 11 piece set with a bag included, so I figure it's a good price. Amongst the sets of clubs I've seen so far though, I've yet to make a decision as I'm still looking at a few final stores. Regarding a used set, I'm also considering buying a used set from someone in the BST forums.

Cheers,

RobinWelcome to the game Robin. 90% of all beginners arrive on the range, the first club they pull out is the Driver, the longest club and the hardest to hit. You said you struggled with hitting a 3-Wood ... another difficult club to hit.

Hit only a 7-IRON for several weeks or maybe 1/2 a season, until you get proficient with that 1 club only. Don't graduate to another club until you are happy how you hit the 7-iron. Early and late in the season my son and I play a whole game with just a 7-iron (well he uses an 8-iron so I can keep up with him). We each carry 1 club, 2 balls and 2 tees. We chip and putt with it too. You would be surprised at how many bogey's you can get if you can hit 1 club solid and straight (never in the woods). My son personal best score using just an 8-iron on a 3,100 yards par 35 course is a 4 over 39. Who needs all the clubs anyway ...

I agree with the other person who said to take 1/4 swings for a while, then move up to 1/2 swings. Use a tee if you have to. Check out this new web site on T-Golf. The concept is perfect for the beginner. www.TGolf.com (http://www.tgolf.com/) This is how you build a swing. Good luck. Its a game to be played all your life.
