Played Don Valley last month and was paired with another twosome, middle aged Koreans, couldn't really speak English. I was playing with my friend who hadn't had a chance to practice much or warm up and was a bit rusty. We introduced ourselves nicely prior to round. After 2 holes, one of the guys comes up to me and says, "Could you play together..." in broken English. I say, "What do you mean?" He goes, "Too slow...beginner...play same ball..." I go, "best ball? No thanks." These guys thought they were too good and in a rush to go play, and this after a couple of holes where my friend hits one lousy tee shot. And then after 7 holes, they go, "We separate". I go what do you mean? And he just points and motions that they'll go ahead. I said okay, knowing it's they're fault if the marshall gets them. And sure enough after a couple of holes the marshall put us back together again. I was laughing my head off, and ignored these guys the rest of the way. And worse yet he wasn't any good, his friend played at or worse than my partner. How arrogant can people get?

My friend experienced the exact same thing when he took our other friend to the course for his first time. The Korean guys were just plain rude and played on. Another time, my same friend confronted one that played my friend's ball. He pretended not to speak English when we had heard him speak it before, and when my friend called him on that, he said he didn't know anything. WTF?

I know that not all of them are like this though, and I'm sure a few rotten eggs are spoiling the rest. We once had a walk-on join us, and he was a Korean guy trying for the CPGA. He was very nice to us despite being so much better than us. The ironic thing is that he says he hates playing with other Koreans cause many of them are so rude.

I had one earlier this summer in an event. I know you should not have your cell phone on when your playing but I always keep mine on vibrate in case of emergencies. The only call I will take is family as they all know I am playing. So I get this call from my fiance who just had a tire blow oput on her travelling at 120 on the 401. She called me in hysterics scared and what not. I took this sall far away from the rest of everyone and did not speak during any of their strokes.

So this guy in my group goes off on me on the green as I am talking to my caddie about the read of the putt, no one was putting at the time. He said I have no consideration for anyone else in my group and only care for myself and continued to berate me. I lost it, I snapped I almost killed the guy, if it wasn't for the caddy, an ambulance would have had to be called. I am not sure if it was me who was the bad partner or this guy, but i have never been so upset in my life. I would have killed him the way he talking to me.

Oh, really?????

LOL!!

Between you and Ronny, I'm not sure who is more popular... oh, I just remembered, it was mostly calls from Frank to get him some balls... LOL!!!

I agree, there are some jerks out there, but thankfully that's rare. My experience has proven that most people are happy to have a walk on join them. It's been awhile since I've been a true hack, but I still remember those days and they weren't the most comfortable.

Don't let anyone get to you. Follow course ettiquette, play your game and you'll be fine.

Jeff, my friend, you may have a problem with anger management... nah! I'd have throttled the guy too...

I can't imagine Swaain doing anything out of line on the golf course. Sept maybe gettin burned for having the cart in the fescue  .... thanks to Ronny:D

Jeff is easily one of the best guys I've met. Albert, a very solid guy as well.
Ronny, great guy.

Y2K's vet looks PIMP!

Scotty and Framer, although not in our pairing at AG, are great people as well.

Framer can just flat out pound the ball. You can hear the damn thing screaming through the air from the green in front of him. Dude, we need to get a scramble team together.

I think golf is the new "piano". Those of you that are Asian will probably know what I'm talking about. When I was younger, many Asian parents wanted their kids to learn piano.

Nowadays, based on what I've seen on the courses, many Koreans are getting into golf, and they take it *really* seriously. When I played Braeben a few months ago, I saw one guy with his wife/gf on the course, and he kept yelling at her when she was setting up for her shot and doing it incorrectly. I was almost on the verge of yelling at him to shut up, but I restrained myself from doing so.

well this asian korean bashing is getting out of hand.
ive never played with koreans on the course, and yes i have had some run ins with older koreans who wanted to pick up my ball  but ive also had other colour race that actually picked up my ball.
ive seen some trash on the course who shared clubs with there wives and would drink to get drunk on the course, and take litterally 10 mins to finish a hole bad etiquette is everywhere cant just magnify this issue on one race.
i guess asians are easier to notice when they act like idiots on the course but seriously ive seen plenty of non asians who acted like morons and were rude and obnoxious on the course, im sure it would outnumber the koreans that you guys speak of.
also how the fuk do you guys know there koreans??? most white people think hey youre asian your chinese or some other BS and they would say u guys all look alike..now that is a moron.

My, we have a Korean-Gate here....

When I get paired with other people, they are 99% cordial and nice regardless of their nationalities. I think all golfers share something in common. i.e. escape the hustle bustle of the real world for 4-5 hours.

A lot of people appear to be rude because they are beginners and simply do not know better.

I have very little patient with golfers who do not observe the etiquette ans rules of golf. But that is another story all together...

No disrespect to Koreans, and I didn't intend this post as anything against them. I have many Korean friends who play golf or outside of sports for that matter. I had only mentioned that nationality as part of descriptive comment. Apologies if this has offended anyone, other than the two guys who I met that day.

Well, I had also a very bad experience with Koreans at Don Valley a while ago. It was the rudest thing ever happened to me on a golf course. In fact, it made me so upset that I won't play DV ever again.
Must say the staff there reacted as accomodating as they are allowed to, considering it's a municipal course. So, my decision has nothing to do with the course or the staff. It's simply because I don't won't to get into a situation like that again. Ever. Since the place is crawling with Koreans I will stay away.
(I don't mean to generalize but that was the third bad experience i had with Koreans on a golf course. The other two were not at DV, though. Plain rude.)

Finally somebody else agrees that this guy has some huge ISSUES to deal with! The thing that I find the funniest is that people are still trying to play the "race" card even when it comes to something like golf. Don't get me wrong...I am not saying that there are never issues regarding ones race in today's day and age but it just seems really funny that this guy is taking everything that was said in this thread about Koreans the wrong way!

I find this even more strange as I had mentioned above that people have this mentality in a larger city such as Toronto where so many different nationalities live.

Are you kidding me? Caucasian or not this happens more often than you think! I've been paired up with some white guys who think the course is nothing but a reason to smoke some ganja and drink some beer and complain about their wives. Some people on the board just have the common decency not to mention specific races to bash in their posts.

golfguy25
Sep 8, 2005, 09:44 AM
Am I kidding..... The first thing you need to realize is that NOBODY is BASHING any particular RACE ON THIS THREAD. The story that was originally told was abnout a couple of Koreans but there was nothing said that was meant to bash them in any way at all.In fact the originator of the comments even posted a second time to clarify that but I guess you must have misssed that one(probably on purpose so that you could keep complaining about it) People are just reading way too far into the situation and making themselves look like idiots!!

So you can continue to get angry and make stupid comments about white guys smoking dope and drinking on the golf course because it means nothing to me. There are people of any race that will do stupid things anywhere they are.

Good question!

I guess that is one of the main reasons I always play when my friends are playing so I don't get paired up with idiots. The few times I played solo or a two-some, got paired up with decent kind of people.

I would try and talk to the other pair and see if can work something out. But if the other bungholes starts yapping, yelling and stuff, it's very hard for me to back down from it.

I will report them and see what the Manager say.

to be honest, I'm not rude, I don't disrespect another persons game. But I do however (sometimes) don't wait for a guy to take a shot. I get into my zone and just walk to my ball, which would be on the opposite end of the fairway but a lot farther down. I just wanna see the lie and everything, so after the guy behinds me hits, i have time to setup. I do however wait until everybody is on the green. Is this a rude thing to do on my part? Would this annoy you guys?

interesting. i do this too. but come to think of it, it doesn't move your foursome along any faster. if you're in the fairway and your buddy is hunting for his ball OB in the woods.
you can go ahead and hit your approach into the green. but they you'll just be waiting for him to catch-up ... which can be annoying for u, if you hit a lousy 2nd shot.

i find it annoying when a playing partner races to the green, pulls the flag out makes his first putt while i'm sizing up my chip into an elevated green ... in those cases i have to respectfully as him to please re-insert the flagstick.:)

I don't mind the wait time, as long as i've hit a good shot. This allows me to think of the next shot and how to get it close to the hole. Also if i'm waiting extra long, I start looking for balls in the fescue. As for the flagstick pulling part, I've never encountered anybody like this. So can't say anything.

couldn't agree more.

thats another reason to hate rolling hills.

most of these people could not afford a round of golf back in korea. where it cost 200 plus a round. so when they have a chance to golf at the ever so elitist golf course Rolling Hills, they act as if they were one of the Kennedys.

i m glad they are confined to rolling hills and driving ranges.
As for this comment. I play at Rolling Hills to practice, i go to the range to practice, and I talk when I want to talk, usually when i talk I lose all focus on my game. :nono:. However, have you ever considered that certain cultures are brought up differently from western traditions? I have lots of Korean friends, their customs are way different then here, i.e. woman have total respect for their men. I think Japanese cultures are the same. In other cultures men would burn their wives for cheating on them. In our culture, women want equality. I actually went to a korean dinner with friends. I offered to cook, the girls were like it's fine. When it came to eating, I offered the girls to eat first, they said it was fine and let all the guys get full first before they started. I felt bad inside, but they're all used to it. Look at the big picture, we're all raised with varying backgrounds. Since i go to the golf dome @ Woodbine/407 mainly populated by asian, doesn't mean I need to go talk to bloody everybody! Just the gurls:rofl:

As for the Kanye West/Bush/Katrina situation, that's another story.

Try playing at Woodbine GC during twilight time frame...You will be annoyed by a different culture...

But that would be a different thread....

I have some rules with respect to my playing group:

1) You spend X $ to play golf, don't let someone else ruin it for you
2) If they are strangers, rest assured that someone who is less patient than you will eventually and finally confron them. Dont spend your X$ to lecture them
3) If they are your friends. Just don't invite them in future outings or decline their future invites
4) Think one shot at a time
5) When all else fail. Think about this: why would you want your state of mind (and golf game) be affected by people who probably don't even do it intentionally.

Have a good game....

Faemow, I don't think this is being rude at all, as a matter of fact, it's just keeping up the pace of play. I play this way most of the time with my buddies, occasionally waiting behind someone else's ball or walking up the fairway with them when we get the urge to chat.

wow...don't even know if I want to jump into this fray...haha

keeping my comments as race and gender NEUTRAL. I've had unpleasant pairings with all sorts of PEOPLE. I've had chatty, and quiet ones too...a LARGE majority are pleasant, friendly and just fun to play with, even if we are all strangers. That's the beauty of golf.

When it comes to meeting rude people, I am happy to play a quiet round ignoring insulting or comments that could be INTERPRETED as insulting. Remember people come from all walks of life and have cultural differences. We'd like to believe that every PERSON has a similar background and upbringing but they don't. Some cultures have strong male chauvinistic preferences and some cultures teach a more agressive nature. There will always be clashes.

Working in retail, I truely have to ACEPT everyone for who they are. Some obviously will forget their "please" and "thank you's" and some will not even show RESPECT in the way I EXPECT it....but in their world it's "NORMAL".

On the course, there's a common thing that binds us...and it's the game...if you find that you are pair'd with a group that's insulting, make sure you're not holding up the 4'some is the ONLY rule that applies . Play your own game and remind your playing partners that we should all play our OWN game and not worry about YOUR pace of play if it's reasonable. if they have further issues, please raise it up with the marshall.

if your playing partners don't have anything to say beyond "hi" and "bye" let it be...carry a MP3 player and just ignore them also.

yes, I would have to say that the race everyone mentioned above has lately been the biggest cultural clash in golf. Koreans truly are wonderful PEOPLE and I have a regular game with some good friends. They do struggle with English and the North American golf etiquette. I even understand some of the cultural differences. it's not pleasant when you get paired up with some of the situations mentioned above, but play your game and the day ends up fine.

asiaphile,

i don't want to chit chat. don't get me wrong.

i have to spend next 6 hrs with these people. a simple greeting wouldn't hurt.

yeah, also, they are really frigging loud talking amongst themselves.not even a intro handshake? That's harsh...even a fake name wouldn't hurt. When it comes to my shot, and if ppl are talking friggin loudly, I give em the cut eye. Or the 'Tiger' Glaze . Then i turn around, and yell, STFU!! (not the politest thing, but it works) Especially at Rolling Hills where a couple holes converge into 1 tee box. I wish i could whistle with my tongue and teeth.....that's cool. That'll get anybody's attention.

very sad. :(

"The three occupants of the vehicle sustained severe trauma. The driver Hong-Jae Lee, 20, of Toronto, was transported to Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre. At 16:25 on Monday, September 26, 2005, he succumbed to his injuries.
A male passenger, 15, seated in the right front of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A female passenger, 16, seated in the rear of the vehicle, was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Identification and notification of next of kin is in progress, utilizing not only the resources of the Toronto Police Service but also the assistance of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea."

greenie, I see the very very loose connection of your last posting to this thread.

Are you kidding me? Caucasian or not this happens more often than you think! I've been paired up with some white guys who think the course is nothing but a reason to smoke some ganja and drink some beer and complain about their wives. Some people on the board just have the common decency not to mention specific races to bash in their posts.

What are you trying to say?

bs,

u are right. this sort of behavious is not limited to any race.

reminds me of the heatly incident.

but this is a 50km residential zone.

i think heatly was on a highway.

just try living at yonge and finch. u have to put up with a lot of obnoxious koreans.

when u have had numerous bad experiences, u form a bias.
hmmm, I live at Yonge & Sheppard, and deal with "Asians" all the time...some good, some bad...just like THE REST OF US!!!

what does this have to do with this thread?

What does it take to have an individual banned from a site that obviously offers no insight and is merely here to cause unrest?

This type of crap MUST drive you bonkers as it does the rest of us.

I pm'd Mok about him...he suggests that we all put him on our "ignore list", which is easy enough to do...and that he (Mok) is "keeping a close eye on 'greenie'" :(

Many thanks to Mok for effectively moderating this forum and maintaining its integrity.
Jovial banter amongst enthusiasts adds to the conviviality of this community but personal insults (or insults to parents) have no edifying value.

Keep up the good work, Mok!:)
