Played Copetown Woods yesterday and it was in perfect condition. The greens have bumped Deerridge out of first place for condition, as far as courses I've played this year go. I haven't putted anything truer or of a better speed throughout the roughly 70 rounds I've played.
Barry, your people are doing a great job out there. How many rounds does Copetown put through in a year? With the shape it's in, you'd think it was a private course. There is a marked improvement over my last visit there, just about a month ago. I thought it was good, but definitely showed signs of play. Now, it looks and plays like a much more expensive course. If Copetown were 20 minutes east, it would be a $150+ course - I'm glad it's where it is...
If you've never played Copetown, but have been thinking about it, don't hesitate. Now is the time. We teed off at 3:30 and were done by 7:30, even though there was a slow foursome in front of us, so there's still plenty of light for evening golf.
One of these days, I'd like to play number nine when the gold is on the other side of the road - that just looks like a great tee shot (as do a number of the gold tees). I've never seen the markers on that tee deck. Do they ever put them there, Barry?

I'm all for getting together with 1 or two groups of TGN players that would like to go to Copetown. If there's interest, I'll set something up. Maybe for this weekend, if it's not too busy. Any word on tee times this weekend, Barry?

You mean you haven't committed to Thudering Waters, yet? :eek:
I'm playing Whirlpool on Saturday, so Copetown on Sunday would be a nice finish to the weekend. Too bad you won't be able to make it.

Albert,
The gold tee deck on #9 was kind of an oversight by the designer, and we have never used it. It lines up down the road too much, and it is too close to the 1st green. We have kept it to be used for tournaments like the Great Lakes tour, who played here 2 weeks ago, and didn't even use it. We are talking about removing it completely.
I am glad you enjoyed your day here yesterday. I have played many nice courses this year including...Hamilton G & CC, Brantford G & CC, Dundas Valley, Wooden Sticks, Glen Cairn, Heron Point, Taboo, The Rock, Forest City National, Magna and a few other high end courses, and the only course that compares to us condition-wise, is Magna. Needless to say they have a little bit of a larger operating budget than us (and 37 more Maintenance employees).
If there is going to be a group of TGN guys come out to play, let me know and I will hopefully be able to play myself with you.
Thanks.

My point with saying it's a $150 course is that it easily matches any of the courses I've played in Toronto - yes, Eagles Nest, Copper Creek, Angus Glen, etc. Sure, EN may have a nicer clubhouse, but not many public courses can touch that one and there is absolutely nothing wrong with Copetown's clubhouse. The experience at Copetown is above expectations, IMO. It would easily be a premium course in the GTA.

I would think that it would be less than an hour. It's a quick ride down 403 to Hamilton, then towards Paris on 403, take 52 North and you're just about there. About 10 minutes west of Hamilton.
Let me know if you can make it and I'll call for a time.

I don't think it will be above expectations anymore with your positive review. You now have it rated amongst the elite courses in Ontario.
There is no way it is as good as Eagles Nest.
IMO Grey Silo is a better course than Copetown Woods.

IMO Grey Silo is a better course than Copetown Woods.LOL!!!
If anything, I'm biased towards Eagles Nest, my parent company owns that place. For the money, you can't beat Copetown. If Eagles Nest or any of the other course I mentioned in the GTA were priced like Copetown, I'd be willing to bet that the 'extras' wouldn't be there and they'd be hard pressed to match Copetown. Each course offers it's own endearing qualities and my point was that, in GTA, Copetown would either be booked 24/7, if priced at $60 as it is. Priced at $150 in the GTA, during prime time, it would undercut CopperCreek by $10, Eagles Nest by $25 and many other courses by a fair amount. I think it would still do big business at that rate.
In my opinion, Grey Silo is nowhere near Copetown, for a number of reasons:
- bunkers are a joke - being an owner of MP32's, I refuse to hit anything other than my old Cleveland wedge out of there - too many rocks. Sure, the bunkers are rare, but that's no excuse, in my books;
- the extended walks between some holes is nuts if you're a walker. On a cart, who cares? I prefer to walk and it's no fun to get passed by the group behind you on your way to 18;
- too much traffic from outside sources (roller bladers, walkers, joggers, bikers, etc) Sure some of the ladies are great to glance at, but it's still not the reason one goes there.
- I am yet to finish a round at Grey Silo within 4 and 3/4 hours. Most rounds there are 5+;
- let's not even discuss the whole RIM park finance blunder.
Now, don't take offense to my comments about Silo. I think it's got it's place in life and I do enjoy playing it - occasionally. Out of curiosity, when was the last time you played Copetown?

No, no. I wish it were my parents. My "parent company", Con-Drain owns the companies that I work for (Sky Cast Inc, Ontario Concrete Products and Con Cast Pipe, among a couple of others).
Didn't mean to confuse the situation.

I played Copetown in July. Greens were the best I have played all year.
I agree with some of your comments about Grey Silo, but overall I think it is a better layout than Copetown and I have found the conditions there to be very good to excellent every time I have played.
I was not in any bunkers last week when I played, so I can't comment on the rocks.:)
Maybe Copetown Woods can extend my a free green fee to update my evaluation.

Can we stop the childish banter?
I only wanted to post what my true feelings about Copetown were as I had just played it. If it were in horrible shape, I would have said that. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but be ready to back up your words, if I'm anywhere around...
A major reason I like this forum is the fact that we can find out what courses are nice and what ones we should avoid. After a member makes a number of posts, I think that other members begin to form opinions as to whether or not that member's posts are of any value. I think that it would be safe to say that my reviews haven't been over the top or misleading by any means and I believe that shows in the fact that guys are actually going to drive from Toronto this weekend to play it. Yes, I do know these guys from having had the opportunity to play a couple of rounds with them in the past, but I think that only adds to my credibility.
So, can we leave the petty stuff out and leave this thread in a state so that another user may find it useful?
That's my 2 cents.
Thanks.

Well said Albert, sorry for disrupting your thread in the spirit of weeding out a troll, I owe ya an apology and a Stella before the round :D . I thought your review of Copetown was bang on as I've played it and all the courses listed in the first thread. This course would definitely rank among the top courses in the GTA if it were more accessible to the city dwellers, being as far as it is from the city makes some think twice before taking the drive. I myself last year had never even heard of CT before and only learned about it from word of mouth. We took the drive out on a Saturday morning and the entire day from start to finish has been burned in my brain. Looking forward to teeing it up on Sunday, we'll be there early enough to hit some balls and maybe grab a bite before.
Cheers,

Albert I totally agree with some of your comments. I have played Grey Silo foru times this year, and totally love the course, the conditions, the service...its a fantastic course for $65 on weekends......but....
Yeah the rocks in the bunkers irk me too.....I play forged blades and will pick the rocks out that I think will come into contact with my irons..not within the rules, but my clubs are my clubs and i'm not playing in a tourney..
The walk from 1 to 2, 17 to 18 and 18 to the clubhouse are killers...I refuse to take a cart but I am exhausted when i reach 18 tee.
As for the path...yeah some of the ladies are nice to look at, but it doesnt bother me...
I have heard nothing but good things about Copetown...but havent had the opportunity to play it.......yet:)

The weeding out a troll comment shows what an idiot you are.
My original comments were hardly any different than GRT's but you chose to ignore his input.
The fact that I prefer Grey Silo to Copetown Woods gave you no reason to post the crap that you did.

Let's not let this deteriorate any further. Everyone's comments are appreciated, let's just move on.

Thanks for coming to Copetown guys (racmbs, tehflakes and rocknronny), it was a great day. Couldn't have asked for better weather. Even though racmbs and rockn laid a financial beating on flakes and I, the company and course conditions made it all worthwhile. Play was sllllooooowwwww as we had two foursomes in front of us that (stealing a line I like from GRT) "couldn't drive out of their own 2pm shadow".
Thanks again, guys - had an awesome time. Can't wait for Thundering Waters this weekend.

I have played Copetown many times over the past 2 years, it is a solid course with some very good holes. The conditions are usually very good, the greens are often in superb shape and an excellent value for the money. The staff also have always been very cordial, pace of play is 4-4.5 hours, I have never seen it take any longer when I have been there.

Conditions were awesome yesterday bro.....but the two foursomes of ladies in front of us were BRUTALLY slow. At one point, they were on the par 4 5th, standing in front of the tee box cackling like a bunch of old hens.....it took them 10 minutes to finish the hole.
