I'm right-handed for everything. Shouldn't the advantage be for the righties? Just curious but I thought most of the golf courses are designed with righties in mind?

The advantage would be for the lefties if you are buying golf equipment. Everything is almost at least 20% off the RH price.

Really? Wow that is a significant savings. But I bet the stores don't have as much selection for Left handed golfers right? I never see the lefty section at the golf stores. Maybe I'm just not looking for it?

hey golfmonkey, normally when clubs are being clearanced, the left-handed clubs normally go for a lower price than the righties for obvious reasons...also lefties could probably negotiate better for the same club as the owners probably want to get rid of the left-handed clubs....

i'm righ handed..though there's one time i tried my teacher's left handed club..and it seems like I played better with my left hand..@_@..but i ready have right handed clubs..and don't really want to buy a set of let handed clubs and adjust

that's funny. i tried hitting left my first year and hit the balls pretty straight. lost a lot of distance tho. i think all beginners should try both...who knows they may not be what they expect.

Mok, I bet your pretty good at golf. If your a dominant left handed person you should be playing what is called....right handed golf
Let me ask you some questions...
Answer the following questions if you were standing directly behind me watching the shot either hook left or right, or you were behind the plate at a baseball game....
Do you see left field?
When I hook the ball do you see where it goes? If you can, then you can determine which is the left side of the fairway, (considering the target line is the center of the fairway)
Which side of the fairway have I adressed the ball on, or which side of the ball am I standing on?
The club, at the end of the grip touches which hand first?
When we play right-handed golf, which hand do we wear a glove on?
The club is an obvious extention of which arm?
On the downswing, which side of your body is leading into the ball?
The answer to all these questions is LEFT.
So my next question to you is,.....
Why are you called, a right handed golfer??????????
The only answer I have been given to this final question, that made any sense whatsoever, is that....when they named the game and had to determine what to call a particular golfer, right or lefthanded......the majority of people who lined up on the side you and I line up on were right handed people....
My contention is that if right handed people started learning the proper way to play, as a so-called, left handed golfer...they would learn the game incredibly quicker......ie..Phil Mickelson...right handed person....plays left handed......and all the other left handed masters winnersa in the last 5-7 years....well only one other, but statistically, its obvious that more people are getting the message. Keep playing the way you do....The biggest secret in golf is...for the right-handed golfer....the use of the left hand....and if your left hand dominant...your way out in front...........JJack pga in Japan

Here in Japan, right-handed stuff is often on sale, but there are significantly fewer lefties here, so there is very little on sale for us. Worse, there are few demo clubs to try before buying. It sucks! I usually wait till I get to Canada for a holiday and buy stuff that way, or buy stuff off ebay.
P.S. I'm right-handed, but a lefty golfer (like Mickelson). Actually, I bought a used set of Titleist 731PM irons off ebay 2 weeks ago. They rock!! Gonna sell my Callaway Hawkeye irons, which are in excellent condition, but I don't think posting them on the equipment site here will work, cos' they cost about $70 to ship to Canada from Japan, so it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I too am right handed for eating, writing, hockey, baseball, etc.. but when it comes to golf I am a lefty. I started out as a cross hander, using right handed clubs with a left hand low grip. My brother took me golfing one day and when he saw how i was holding the club he took me to Canadian Tire and got me a left handed set of Northwesterns, the rest is history.

Golf left, hockey left, baseball left, throw right, write right.I got my 2 1/2 yr old a kids set of clubs to hack around with me on the front lawn.they only came in right hand so I thought this would force him to shoot right.Nope.He grips it like a left handed hockey stick. Now his driver accuracy is all over the place but his backhand with the driver is straight as an arrow and it goes pretty far and he can pick the top shelf .LOL:rofl: (I got to get him some lefty sticks)!! :D

38% of respondents are lefties so far! That's far more than the average.
The number of people who play left, but who aren't naturally left-handed seems pretty high here.
Some interesting info on lefties from Wikipedia...
Approximately 8 to 15% of the adult population is left-handed. Studies indicate that left-handedness is more common in males than females. Left-handedness, in comparison to the general population, also appears to occur more frequently in identical twins, and several groups of neurologically disordered individuals (people suffering from epilepsy,Down's Syndrome, autism, mental retardation and dyslexia, It is also noted that many bisexuals and homosexuals are left-handed more than their heterosexual counterparts. Also people of South Asian, Eastern European and Southeast Asian descent are more left-handed than any other ethnic groups in the world, while people of Western European, Northern European and African descent are less left-handed.
A common belief suggests that left-handed people are more intelligent or creative than right-handed people. While there is an unresolved debate within the scientific community on how to operationalize both intelligence and creativity, some studies have demonstrated a small positive correlation between left-handedness and creativity/intelligence.
in the sport of ice hockey, there are many more left-handed shooters, and the majority of goaltenders catch with their left hand (forcing many opponents to shoot left-handed, in the process.) **I believe this partly explains the disproportionate number of lefties in Canada and on this board!**
Although 10-15% of the world's population are left-handed, there are far lower percentage of left-handed golfers than that. There are a number of reasons for this:
- Many left-handers seem to play golf right-handed, which for many of them seems more natural as they are leading with their left side, left eye and turning anti-clockwise (why do right-handers play that way as well?)
- Until recently it was difficult to get hold of left-handed golf clubs so lefties just made do with what was available
- Most instructors and instruction materials are right-handed and that seems to be the "correct" way to play.
Which way you play golf can have more to do with your eyes than your hands and a lot of famous left-handed golf players are actually right-handed in everything else they do. Two good examples are Mike Weir who won the US Masters in 2003 and Phil Mickelson who won in 2004. The trick is to look down at a ball and see which way you visualise it leaving your body - that will tell you which side of the ball to stand.
I also think that lefties are more insecure about being lefties, so they are more likely to feel it important to 'show the lefty flag' if you will. In other words, righties don't bother to respond polls like this, because they don't think it's a big deal.

Right handed for everything else - tennis, frisbee, throwing,

You sound a bit like my GF's son. He plays golf and tennis, uses hand tools, throws a baseball/football, and plays guitar in his band right-handed. He eats, writes, draws, uses his computer mouse left-handed. It seems that if it requires muscle, it's right....if it requires precision, it's left. But being ambidextrous does have advantages, like playing a guitar. I thought he was just weird, but it seems like there are a ton of people with similar dexterity. I'm jealous!!

I am the same...although I'm all thumbs when it comes to chop sticks!
Seriously though I do everything right handed EXCEPT write. I shoot right in hockey, throw a ball right handed, swing a baseball bat and a tennis raquet right handed, and obvioulsy golf right handed too. I agree with the statements about being left/right eye dominent and I do feel the fact I write left handed and swing right handed does give me an advantage.
FYI....Apparently MANY PGA players fall into this category, and also very interesting MANY PGA players are also colour blind (which I am too). I'm not sure if being colour blind is a positive or a negative in terms of putting, but I found that fact interesting.
My son is the opposite of me, he golfs (and plays hockey) left handed but writes with his right hand.
My teachers tried to convert me in the early grades when you first start learning to write but I would have no part of it. However I hated the left handed scissors they tried to get me to use and went back to the "normal" ones. What can I say....I'm pretty messed up!
Also please include "leftintherough" as a lefty for the survey! Steve won't mind me putting in his 2 cents worth on this topic.:hush:
Canada as a population have the highest % of left handed players in the world. The on-going debate as to why is usually brought back to hockey.
