well, she is definitely in Anna Kournikova's category in terms of looks, but her tennis skill is much greater.

She has been dominating the women's tennis scene this entire year.

She also just won the WTA Tour Championship against Serena Williams to cap off the amazing year.

She is young and I suspect she will dominate tennis for a long time.

I still think Kournikova looks better than Sharapova.....but it's close in terms of looks...:D .....in terms of skill......it's not even a comparison.....

Is it just me or have tennis outfits gotten a lot skimpier? They show alot more skin than they used to. Maria Sharapova is pretty nice. yeah... i would say on par with Anna.

Wow that is impressive. I think Maria is a great role model for young tennis stars. Smart, sexy and skilled! Not Anna though...she is totally just exploiting her looks for money. She is barely better than the women who make money through the oldest profession in the world. :nono:

i would have to disagree, Anna is still a good tennnis player. 16 WTA doubles titles, over $3 million in prize money, was #8 in the ENTIRE WORLD in singles, was #1 in doubles. her tennis game is not as good as it used to and i don't think it's due to her publicity in terms of looks, she had a few injuries and she is getting old. If you look at the womens tennis scene, young tennis players dominate...for example, where is Martina Hingis now? She is only 24 now, but I haven't heard her name in ages. She only won when she was young, same with Kournikova, she is too old for womens tennis it seems.

i believe she's retired. she had some injuries that weren't going away and called it quits.

there are quite a few russian females in the top 20.

as a side note Yevgeny Kafelnikov is calling it quits too. he's thinking about playing poker profesionally.

I agree that younger Tennis players dominate the sport. Some young tennis players to look out for are Justine Henin-Hardenne or Kim Clijsters. And they are only a couple years younger than Anna. Anna is 25 now and still has competing years in her if she chooses. I know that some people think she will recover from her back injury and play again in 2005. Do you think if she comes back, that she will make a comeback?

Why don't we compare Anna at her prime to others that are older than her. Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles. Even the Williams sisters who are aged 24 and 25 are far superior players with Grand Slam Titles. Anna has no Career Titles. Should I mention Martina Navratilova whose singles career titles spans over 20 years. Her doubles career wins spans 30 years!

All I'm saying is that Anna has millions of dollars of endorsements and the companies that give this to her are not basing it on her total wins or her tennis skills. (I guess they are to blame and she is not solely responsible for exploiting her sex appeal!)

I should add that I'm not a tennis fan anymore. I used to watch back in my highschool days. But now I wouldn't really know what criteria would qualify you as a Good player. So this is all just my opinion based on what I read in the sports sections. :p

I think if Anna comes back she will not be a dominate force in singles, maybe in doubles. She is already too old for singles.

looks definitely get you far in society, there is no denying that. anna is more marketable than other tennis players, for example, hingis who was once a #1 player and grand slam winner, if you had a choice to pick either anna or martina as spokesperson for your company, most companies would pick anna because the public demands her. we shouldn't blame anna or the companies!

ditto.
