View Full Version : my theory on yesterdays gas prices

here it go's
with rita coming it is definate that prices are going to sky rocket after the storm.
i think someone from the gas companies started the rumor yerterday, to depleat there stock, so that today they can fill up there holding tanks at a fair market price(realitively speaking)
then everyone is full for the next 5 days, and we all have to fill up at around $1.50 per litre by around tuesday.
rembering that they bought there gas at a market price that reflects a retail value of around $1.00 a litre (todays price)
nice, an extra .50c a litre!
now, it could also just be some bus riding punk, or some tree hugger. that started this rumor.
anyway, on a happy note, i filled up my 125 litre tank this morning at $1.04 a litre for premium gas. a special thanks to the everyone that waited in line for an hour yesterday evening to make this possible for me.
the gas station is the esso at railside and lawrence.

2) How could you possibly call a $130 fill-up a "happy note?" That's insane.
I am amazed how SUV drivers are taking these astronomical gas prices in stride. When my last lease expired in August, I was seriously looking at a Santa Fe, but went with a Pontiac Vibe instead because I worried about the gas prices then -- and that was only 80˘ a litre!

I'll try to keep this rant to a minimum but the price gauging makes me verrrrrry angry...
I have no doubt that the rumors were started by the oil companies themselves!
What is the price of gas this morning? The same 1.04 that I filled up at last night...
So the price of crude oil continues to fall... no relief at the pumps....
FINE! They say that it is the refinery production that is causing the issues...
Well what about the fact that we have multiple oil refineries in our own country (Alberta has how many?) yet instead of selling the gas domestically they export it.... We could still have $0.50 gas but instead we ship it to the States and then import back from the States...????
I say screw em! We should use what we produce first and then sell whatever is left over...
I also think the .gov needs to step in and regulate the cost of fuel... The spikes are bloddy ridiculous. There needs to be checks and balances in place for this stuff! There is ZERO reason why gas companies should be allowed to fluctuate gas by as much as $0.50 / litre in a day!!!! The gas we are buying at the pump was bought days/weeks or even months ago. They should not be allowed to charge prices based on that day... they should have the prices set that far in advance! Then people can choose when to fill up based on a known forecast!
I have to stop typing... i am getting angry and hitting the keys harder with each letter! :D
Oh well... back to work so i can afford my next tank of gas.

Here is my theory:
Oil companies = corporate bandits.
Federal/Provincial gov'ts = overpaid officials who could care less about the general populace.
Federal Competition Bureau = a useless body which continually ignores price fixing within the oil industry since time began.

Buy stock in Petro Canada, ESSO, Mobile , etc. Then when they report their quarterlies and have record profits so will you!
Don't get angry - use the system.
We were all warned about fuel prices almost as soon as the US declared war on Iraq (another issue) had you bought shares in Petro Canada (PCA) for roughly $20 - $25 a share... you'd be realizing today a profit of about $20 - 25 per share !! Plus all the nice dividends inbetween.

I am beginning to think that the major oil companies are taking the wind speed of the hurricanes and using that to price our gas.
Katrina wind speeds were 135 MPH, gas was $1.35/litre
If Rita hits shore at 140 MPH will gas then be $1.40/litre?
I am not buying into this supply/demand carp they are giving us. Sarnia is still producing gas.
What needs to be done is have our Fiberal Government get off their a*%es and make sure gas prices go up or down according to crude oil prices.
Some of you might recall when crude was close to $90 US a barrell back in the late 70's or early 80's. We sure as heck were not paying $1.35/litre back then were we? Now crude is $66US barrel and gas is $1.35/litre.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm can you say RIPOFF?

is there any truth to the rumours that powercart rental fees are jumping by 40% this weekend?
It would be major gouging, especially for those courses with electric powercarts.

Buy stock in Toyota and Honda. We are now in the $1/litre time. Last week OPEC announced it would flood the market with crude oil, up 2 million barrels a day and no one has contacted them to bite. There's a new way to pump gas now, you take the nosel and stick it up your a$$, cause we're all getting raped at the pumps. :D Sorry my rant for the day. But seriously, buy stock in Toyota and Honda.

But seriously, buy stock in Toyota and Honda.Tickyboy I don't want to sound rude, so please don't take this the wrong way. Does your job depend on the auto industry? Or does it depend on someone from the auto industry buying your employers products?
Reason I ask is this. Did you know that one in seven jobs in Ontario depends on the North American Big 3 auto industry? For every person working in an auto assembly plant there are 7 more people working in the parts industry to supply those plants assembling cars. You are from around London, I bet you have friends who work in the auto industry.
The Japanese flood our market with their imports, sure they build here but their imports far out weigh the # of cars they build on North American soil.
Since 1996 the Japanese have captured 13% more of the auto sales in North America. That number represents 13 Big 3 assembly plants being closed. Now let's just say on average there was 2000 employees at each plant, that's 26,000 jobs lost. Now take the 1 in 7 factor into consideration and that adds another 182,000 jobs lost in the auto parts jobs. So now we have 208,000 jobs lost. Good paying jobs for people who pay higher tax rates, spend millions every year into the local economies. That all adds up to a lose for the local economies, meaning the guy who worked at the local store gets laid off because buisness is slow.
Hey don't take this the wrong way, you are free to buy any vehicle you want. I happen to work in the Big 3 auto industry and I would prefer to see Canadian people working and contributing to the local economy than see huge profits being made on Toyota and Honda, which all goes back to Japan.
The Big 3 all build vehicles which are fuel efficient, why not buy one of those instead of the imports?
Just some food for thought.

I have extremely close ties to people working in the big 3 auto industry, specifically Ford. In fact, let's just say I'll probably drive Ford most of my life. BUT, as a young, almost university graduated guy the Ford label does not have a car that performs at a decent level and is appealing to me. The car that comes to mind is a focus, but when I think focus I think 80 year old grandma's car. Now I am not suggesting that I will therefore buy a civic because I strongly dislike the car and the apparent scene surrounding it. But something like a corolla fits the bill.
I dont know, maybe Ford will produce a car for me. Right now am driving a 3.0L ranger, but it's now costing me $55ish to fill it up, and I get about 420 km to the tank. I know there are other cars with better economy than that, but unfortunately are not produced yet in NA.

rembering that they bought there gas at a market price that reflects a retail value of around $1.00 a litre (todays price).
When oil companies like Esso, Shell, etc. are crying about that their buying costs are increasing as well ... it's not our fault kinda way ... than there's one thing they are not telling you.
There are three companies involved in the process. First, the one that produces the oil, gets it out of the earth. Second, there's the company that buys the barrels and refines it to gas. Which we then buy at the third level, the retail company (gas station).
Each of these three companies complains that their cost is depending on what the other company are charging. What they are not saying is that all those three companies are actually just one. No matter if it's Shell, Esso, etc. they all in fact are buying it from themselves. Meaning these guys piling up profit on top of profit on top of profit.
I believe it's time for the government to step in and start regulating.
(only gas prices that is! so that Golftool keeps being annoyed by all the junk cars and idiots that slow down his commute to golf/work/cottage ... as he said in his nice post)

- Never heard of that – what is it? If its like regulating – then imo government HAS NO BUSINESS REGULATING ANY BUSINESS! We live in a capitalist society and if they decide to regulate this – whos to say they wont do it to other types of business. We’re not communists!
As far as im concerned – let big oil raise the price to $4.00/L so we can get half the junk cars and idiots off the roads. – Less traffic to deal with going to the golf course / work / cottage.

Hmmmmmmmmm so now I feel like an 80 year old woman because I drive a Focus:mad: I love my Focus ZX5 SES. Fun to drive, has everything I need for options, was a good price and is good on fuel.I actually leases this car for my daughter, once she graduates college next spring she is going to take over the lease. She wanted a ZX5 so that is what I leased.
Ford has the new model, the Fusion on the market now and it is a nice looking car.

I do tend to agree with you though, Ford has fallen behind in their designs of vehicles for younger people. Other than the Mustang (Which most young people can't afford the insurance on!) they really do not have a lot to offer. That said, I would still rather drive a BIG 3 manufactured car simply because I know that many high paying jobs are at stake.
One issue I have with this import business is this. The Japanese companies can dump millions of vehicles onto the North American shores with hardly any costs involved. The Big 3 have to pay huge tariffs to sell cars in Japan. Now that is the Governments fault and they need to deal with it otherwise many jobs will be lost in the next 10 years. High paying jobs that contribute a lot of money to the tax coffers and the economy.
Fuel prices? Ridiculous, there is no need for Canadians to be paying what we are at the pumps. This crap about supply and demand, well what has changed in the past 5 years as far as supply and demand goes? Not much in my eyes. Don't expect our Liberal's to do anything about it, they just sit back and rake in the millions in tax dollars from the sales at the pumps.
Sooner or later fuel prices will start to change prices on a lot of good we buy everyday. Plus if you have to spend $1000 more a year to drive to and from work that means you might not buy that new fridge, or set of irons, etc etc. It all adds up in the local economies.
If you own a home, wait until you start getting your natural gas bills this winter:( The cost of natural gas has risen 64% since last January and it is supposed to go higher once winter arrives. So add that cost into your budget and there goes another $1000 you will not have to spend on other items.
With that said, where do you golf most of the time? I see you are from the London area. Have a nice day:)

i don't have any problem with companies making money, but there is a law agains't a monopoly. and in my opinion, this is what is happing. they are all charging the same price, in other words no competion. they are in kahoots.
i have spoken to a company ( a client of mine) and they have an electric car prototype ready to go, the problem is, the gubment will not alow it, the have too much to lose in revenues generated by gas taxs, and car repairs, ect. ( aparently electric cars won't break down like gas powered)
i dont know much about it, but he sure did.
anyway, if this is true,i believe the gubment has some cards to play against the gas companies. they can have an electric car tax that compinsates them for the lost revenues. the last thing the gas companies wan't is an electric car
who am i kidding, there all on the take

I'm not a Liberal and not a Conservative/Alliance guy either. Heck, on my totem pole all politicians don't rank much higher than a dog can pee. But I don't think the problem would be solved if the Liberals get kicked out by the Conservative (former Alliance) guys. That Harper guy is so right wing he's scary. Ok maybe the ZX series is okay, I do like the ZX3 and will probably get one. I'm just exaggerating a little on the 80 year old thing. BUT, you admit they don't have anything for me. The fusion comes with the same well used V6 engine that's found in so many other cars in the lineup with little tweaks here and there. It's certainly not a fuel efficient engine per say. They do have the escape hybrid, which offers pretty decent mileage for that kind of automobile. My suggestion: create an engine that's 2 litres and under utilizing a turbo for added power. That'll sell to me.
