To all those so call PRO GOLFERS out there that say black diamond sucks .....is pretty bad if you were a true golfer you would know that it takes more then a year for a course to mature..... and saying that the super and gm are brutal and saying that the super can't grow grass.... i'm pretty sure that we had a huge hot spell this year and almost every course that i have seen was brunt.....go out there now and play it's so green and the greens are rolling about 8 and half u think they wanna make their greens to roll for 10 this year LOL come on now all their greens would be gone and the back nine greens are in bad shape but hey when they had 12 000 rounds out there this year i'm pretty sure the course is going to take a little of beaten.......... so to the golfers that says it sucks you might wanna take up a different sport because ur probably hacking up the course

What's the need to bash the guy for? He's posting something positive. No way this guy is like Moe and I appreciate the comment.
It does make sense that the course is beat up. It's barely a year old. Yes, grass needs to grow there but its not like we're having the greatest summer for that.
Regardless, I still think that the back nine is a joke. The 10th hole will one day get somebody killed.

Because he stepped over the line by insulting those that provided an opinion. If he just stated that he disagreed, that's fine. However, those that posted negative opinions and now hackers and should quit the game because they're reason the course is hacked up.
So...off come the gloves.

Just to clarify,
I haven't played BD yet but hope to at some point. I agree that this season may be the worst in decades for growing new grass so I am sympathetic to the course, somewhat! But if you are going to post here and insult others, you might want to try doing it in remotely proper English.
And the point about the Golf Nuts not knowing that a course may take a year to mature? An interesting point but we do know that MOST courses wait until the course is ready before opening. It appears from many posts that BD opened too soon. Perhaps it was too much to ask but it appears BD has hurt their reputation by opening before the course was fully ready. That is a legitimate opinion for the members to express, hackers or not.
I was really tempted to do that whole rant as a mispelled run-on sentence but my grade 6 education got the best of me. Ha-ha??
Regards.

I think that Black Diamond WILL BE a really nice course in a few years, and quite frankly, it's really the OWNERS fault for perhaps opening up to the public too soon...but it's 'all about the Benjamins' isn't it?!!
We didn't notice anything terribly wrong with the 10th hole (quite like it!), but the entire back 9 is certainly not WALKER-friendly!!:(
Will the 17th green ever have grass?!

I played this course earlier this year and will never play it again for more than one reason. Here's a few....
1)The super yelled at us on the 17th tee. He was near the green when we teed off and hit the green. Not one ball was even close to him. He then drove to the tee and attempted to tear a strip off us for not calling "fore" and something about learning the game. As most of us know when calling fore there is a chance that the person may move into the ball and therefore get hit. Whats the point of calling if there is no chance of being hit? Anyway he picked the wrong foursome to vent on.
2) We asked about temp greens prior to teeing off. We were lied to three greens should have been temps but weren't.
3) There are too many Mickey Mouse holes. Yeah its scenic on the back nine but it isn't a nice layout. The land had potential its too bad they ruined it with another Jack Lalley design!
Too many golf courses forget about customer service. There are lots of courses out there to choose from. I'll take my business elsewhere.

Maybe GOLFNUT is playing a different Black Diamond. The one most of us are reviewing is the BD in Pontypool. Giving him the benefit of the doubt I know that there is more than one BD on planet earth.

I think BD has potential to be a nice course when it matures. I agree that the back 9 is scenic but personally I don't like the layout. The first time I played it back in July, there were 2 or 3 temp greens and the fairways were a bit dried out. The greens on the back 9 were horrid! We played it again in mid-Sept and while the greens and fairways were in better condition there was still a temp green (more like mowed down rough!) on the last par3 on the back 9. The speed of the greens varied from fast to s-l-o-w so trying to get any type of putting rythm down was out the door. But heck, for $55. inc. cart, hard to pass up.

Why would they open a golf course that isn't ready yet? Why would they charge what they do if it is rotten shape? 12,000 rounds? Most courses have between 30,000 and 40,000 rounds a years! What's he talking about? Oshawa Golf Club? He probably is a member there, have you seen it lately? Probably the same shape as Black Diamond! Not good! And by the way, opening too early has most likely pushed them back more than a year to get itback to even reasonable shape. Go to Black Bear Ridge...they opened a year AFTER they could have so that the course was nice shape from the start!!!<Oh, Look A Positive Posting:) >

Moe, the difference is that he's not saying the course is in great shape when it's not. He openly admits that it's not in the greatest shape and acknowledged the slow greens and conditions based on openning early and high traffic. He's merely saying that there wasn't a need to bash the GM and super. I agree with him b/c it may be the owners who wanted to open early to raise capital. Yes, it's not in good shape at the moment. Don't play it. Plain and simple. Just like RA. Some people here are avoiding the course like the plague. However, when it gets back in shape, don't you think those who were so harsh will return? Golfers are very fickle people indeed.

THE GOLFNUT is back.....This is what i am saying about BD it's true its not in great shape but it has came along way since it open....i think that the price is a little too high for this year but the owners need the money.....I know the super and he does a great job and he didn't even want the back nine to be open this year because the back nine was layed last all the greens , but nope the gm (DARREN) wanted money and he is a joke don't get me wrong..... but if anybody wants to play this course i would play it now because i think it's in the best shape since it open honeslty.......and the layout is awesome....... give it 2-3 years and u'll see an awesome golf course......... they just need to get the GM out of there he is horibble to deal with as while

After reading your post it's painfully obvious how hard up for cash BD must be.
Seems as though word has spread around quickly about how big of a joke the layout is.

The "layout" is terrific, especially the Front 9, and as many have said, it will be a really nice track in a few years...and they will do lots of business as it's easy to get to (if your on your way to/from Peterborough)...and no doubt they will 'jack' the price up a bit too!:(

I think different people have different preference in the layout of a golf course they like. What some people think is a good layout maybe in other people's eye a joke. It is sort of like car or fashion. You can find people either really like a model or really hate it. I played Black Diamond only once and I like its layout and I enjoy it. As long as you have some fun after a round of golf that's all it matters. Right?

Hmm, maybe I'm not as fickle as some then. I avoided Oakridge for two years after playing once in each of the previous two and finding it below average. It was only when some of my buddies played there and told me that it was back in good shape that I even thought about going back.
I've had bad experiences this year at RA, and I'll try again in the spring. If it's not back in decent shape then, I'll likely take a pass for the rest next year too, or until somebody I know personally tells me it's back.
If your course is a decent value for the money, I'll likely play it several times. If it's not, I probably won't come back for a while.

I'm a mid-capper and don't usually have too much problem shaping the ball if needed but I find that there are a few holes in the back 9 that are just there to ruin your scorecard... 13/15/16 comes to mind. On 13 if you hit a good drive you end up having the ball above your feet for the second shot which requires a cut if you want to curve it around the corner but with the ball above your feet, it's a little tough to do for me to cut it. Even if you decide to lay up at the end of the dogleg, there is so much downhill slope that the ball runs off into the bunker. On 16, if you hit a good 3wood or so down to the flat landing area, you have this huge tree to contend with right in the middle of the fairway and then you have the treeline tucked in close on both sides, add on top of that, the green is elevated way way up. I love challenging courses but when they're designed to just punish you for no reason, it's just not fair.

Played the course this past weekend...
There were a few temporary tee boxes and one temporary greens. The temporary tee boxes changed the characteristics of those few holes. Not a big deal considering that I just wanted to go our and whack some balls.
As far as conditioning goes, it is decent for a first year course. Greens are slower than what I expected.
The service staffs there are nice and hospitable.
The front 9 is more or less what you'd expect on a southern Ontario golf course. The back 9 is very hilly. I think the owner was probably building a ski compound but changed his mind half way. I think the name Black Diamond is refering to those ski hills like holes.
There are some pretty nice looking holes and I think the course has a lot of potentials. It will be interesting to see how a few years of maturing will do to this golf course.
All in all, not bad for $40.
