View Full Version : NOW I KNOW WHY I QUIT WEARING A GLOVE

As I sorted through old balls etc etc this morning I came across 9 worn out FootJoy Weather Soft gloves in my ball box. I quit wearing a glove mid way through this season and really did not notice any difference in my game.
Now I did some math and there was approx. $150 worth of gloves in various states of wear in that box. Plus I am sure I tossed out a few more at the course.
Now I have another reason not to wear a glove, CHA CHING $$$$:D

Have you ever tried golfing without a glove on? Hey I am not trying to take business away from pro shops etc, but if you go through gloves like I did (I play 4-5 rounds a week, sometimes 7) then that really starts to add up during the season. Think about how many gloves you bought and the cost and you might be suprised. I would not have given this a 2nd thought if I had not tossed those old gloves in the ball box.

I have cord grips on my clubs, and they tend to be a bit harder on gloves. Plus my hands do not slip with the cord grips. So maybe that is a major factor in not having to wear one. Plus my hands do not sweat in the heat so that helps.

OK now I am going to the course to play 18 on a sunny Friday afternoon:)

i only wear gloves during range practice.

on the course I just seem to have better feel during a round without them.

also it allows me to watch the tension in my hands....too much tension and I feel it after or during the round..

I don't play with a glove unless it's really raining and I can't hold onto the club. I've got a like new glove in my bag that I grabed with some store credit early this season and another glove that's in good shape that I've had for (5?)years. I use cord grips on all my irons and holding onto the club isn't ever an issue. I see some of the people I play with still wearing their glove when they are putting and wonder how they have any feel at all.

maybe i'll try not to wear one next time..

i have tour wrap grips, so i don't think it'll slip..but i do have sweaty hands.

only in cold weather when the mis-hits will sting your hands. A glove will dampen it a little.

I do wear a glove, but not for putting, and not for chipping about half the time. I don't have cord grips, but I'm looking at replacing mine with cords over the winter.

I was playing in Chicago this summer, and lost my glove after 8 holes, thought I had another one in-the-bag somewhere...no such luck...played the rest of the round without it, all-the-while concerned I was gonna get callouses/blisters and/or not grip the club properly...DIDN'T HAPPEN!

Now, I wear a glove occasionally (wet/cold/very humid), but otherwise I go bear back!!!

I use the FJ Weather Softs as well... only because they're cheap. I was wondering, for those who wear gloves, do premium gloves offer better comfort, playability? I wonder... :dunno:

You don't ever want to be "greenie". :nono:

I don't wear a glove either. Full cord grips on all my wands.

You don't ever want to be "greenie". :nono: .agreed. i don't look good with a 5-iron wrapped around my neck.

Very nice of you GRT for setting up the swaaains lottery foundation!

Do fully cord grips significantly shorten the life expectancy of your gloves?

Also, does anyone take *gasp* sandpaper to your slightly older grips to roughen them up for more traction. I think some caddies do this for the tour players.

I've been playing Ping gloves for most the year, and they are midrange in terms of price. I do find the really cheap ones get slick really fast. I really liked the FJ Weather Soft GTX gloves, but they stopped making them two years ago.

I've also had better luck this year with gloves not wearing out. This year, they are getting slick on me before I wear them out.

Full cord grips do chew through gloves unless you can swing without the club moving in your hands.

My stupid swing is too long and I tend to lose a little of the butt end of the grip at the top of the swing. On the way down I regrip the club (none of this movement is noticeable to me during the swing) and swing through to my target. This causes a stupid amount of wear in the heal pad of the glove.

Never heard of sanding grips. Of coarse I never had to clean my grips either.

Yes, I proudly wear both my unmatching gloves all the time! I've had them for three years (and I actually put them back in the plastic case it came in after each round because my friend who kinda got me into golf did the same thing. I see my bf crumple and shove his gloves in all different kinds of pockets and it's beginning to look quite gross

I just came back from an hour at the range and I didn't wear gloves at all coz I forgot them. Didn't feel much difference.

I've hear it suggested that you take a fine file to cords to roughen them up a bit.

Nah I am not made of money. I have an unlimited membership which cost me $1149. Remember golf is a lot cheaper down here near London. The most I have paid for green fees, (and these courses are the high end courses around here for green fee players. Firerock and Forest City National) was $52 with a cart and range balls. I take advantage of my membership, last year I played 165 rounds, 150 of them at my course. Now you know why I quit wearing gloves. Freddy Couples seems to golf fine without them. Years ago I went the entire summer and did not wear one so to me it is not a big deal.
I see guys who have a glove on that should be in the garbage can, and wonder what good it is doing them. Slick and worn out, might as well go without. My hands to not blister, and I do not have callouses. Soft hands;)

Plus I work in the auto industry and have had some down weeks this year (like next week, oh no more golf:D ) so that helps. My wife does not get ticked if I play a lot of golf, that really helps :) Example from last Sunday to this Sunday I will play 6 rounds. It rained Monday so no golf and it started raining Thursday when I went to play so I came home and watched golf on TV.
Life is gooooooooooood down south!
