Retief Goosen takes a 1 stroke lead over VJ shooting a 7 under par 65. Mickelson follows with 4 under and Todd Hamilton at 2 under.
I know it's the silly season of professional golf, but I'm really starting to like Goosen's game and demeanour more and more as I watch him play....he's so calm everytime he steps out onto a course....nothing seems to rattle this guy....

Goosen is a smooth operator, just like Els.

I watched late last night on a taped version. Good little battle between the Goose and VJ. I think those two are pretty much on top of their games right now. Goose is playing exceptionally well and I agree with Ego about his demeanour. Calm, cool, relaxing...just nice to watch.
Phil's game is still inconsistent. He's all over the place, eagles, bogey's, one hole after the other...is it just me or has his wedge play sucked ever since he changed to Callaway? I read he only changed his driver and irons but his wedges are still his old ones? Maybe its the Callaway balls?

man watching this event is very exciting, the commentators are making it real exciting and there are a lot more GREAT shots compared to a regular event...i guess that's what you get when you put the best of the best together hehe.

Yes, I found watching last night that the commentators spent more time on explaining different shots and situations and not just play by play. Seemed like they were targeting the less avid golf fans on TV. Also, liked the microphone on each player. You sometimes get to hear what they're saying in terms of how they're going to play their shot and also the caddie to player conversation. Neat.

Only the 5th professional to do so.Is that really only how many have shot in the 50's? I would have thought there would be more than that.
Congrats to Phil for this great score. I hear he had only 23 putts and they didnt look all that close to the hole. I would love to know what his birdie distance was for the round.

It's nice to hear....I hope Phil has found his groove back again after some time with his new clubs....Phil is a lot of fun to watch.....I'd love to see Tiger, VJ, Els, Goosen and Phil compete a lot against each other next season...all of them are great to watch...

Amazing!!! Phil Mickelson shoots a 59 in the final round of the PGA Grand Slam of golf. Almost a 58 by inches.
He joins an elite club of Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval and Annika Sorenstam to shoot a 59. It's not an official event but a 59 is a 59.
Congrats Phil!

I watched the replay on TSN last night and his putting was just unbelievable!! 23 putts and he only hit 5 fairways all day. He dialed in from over 30 feet numerous times with some tricky breaks. One commentator said it was the most awesome putting display he's seen in his career. He saved par on so many occasions when he was in the rough or had a poor lie. Amazing!

Just curious...Who are the other Pro golfers that are part of this 50s club?

Annika, David Duval are 2 others and I believe Geiberger is one, just missing the 5th player (only 5 have done it). Shegekie Maryiamo (spelling) shot 58 in a qualifying round once.

A bunch of other golfers have shot in the 50's before as well but because they weren't official events, they did not count in the books. Mickelson's 59 doesn't count either but it wasn't an official event. Amateur qualifying tournaments don't count but thats where Shageki and Notle Bagay III shot 58's respectively.

Thanks for providing the names EDSGolf and Focker. hmm I've never heard of some of those golfers before. So is posting a 58 or 59 a one time fluke for them? Or are they regular professional golfers that I just don't see at televised tournaments?

You're welcome. I think it's a combination of fluke, luck and of course skills. Annika thinks that a 54 can be done, that's 18 birdies !!!
