I used to almost kinda sorta work in the golf business.

I actually work in the magazine business, but back in the late '90's one of the magazines I worked for was Golf Canada (the official magazine of the RCGA). A big part of my job was contacting golf course owners to arrange for distribution of the magazine at the clubhouse and/or through home delivery directly to members.

In fact that was how I was introduced to the game (I never played when I worked at GC) - and I've been hooked ever since!

I was in the industry for 4 years......decided to leave as the corporate's upper echelons hunger for money sadly took away my love for the game. At the end of the day, it was only about the money and not the love for the game (hint :D )

Now I'm back in the IT world and lovin' it......although if Taylor Made or Cally came a knockin', I'd be outta there in a flash.

Just curious as to how many of you work in the golf business, is so.... where do you work and what you do?I have a question for you... What makes Angus Glen cost $175 a round... Mind you I have never played the track, I hear it's well maintained.

My understanding is it's mostly tournaments that happen there - so the companies typically pickup the tab.

For example - if you had to choose Osprey Valley or St. Andrews vs Angus, where would you play?

Just wondering... and btw Your WebSite is nice...

Well, sorry I am late to enter this thread. I work at Angus Glen, I am a pro mannabe, just don't have the time actually play or practice. I work with Golfguy25 in the golf equipment shop. I do the majority of the club fittings whil Chad sell the shoes :p . Ah just buggin you buddy, I work with Focker Sing and AG Rook SM as well. Both Chad and I are trying to turn pro and neither of us really get to play as we are always crazy busy.

My official title is Golf Club Geek, :D at the club. I actually have an edumacation in accounting and business management as well as My deploma in Professional Golf Managemt from Humber.

Someone asked why it is so expensive to play here. My answer to this is that it costs a small fortune to run a golf club. We strive to keep our number 1 in service for the country and we need to have the best staff possible for this. The staff here are taken care very well. Also, in order to keep a golf course in great shape the budget for maintenance must be in the millions.

The product we offer is much different than some of the other courses in the area as our facilities are much different as well. We offer the private club feeling to the general public.

All I can say is if you love to play golf, do not get into the golf industry, you never, ever get to play.

I don't know if angus glen is a private company so I don't know if you are allowed to say this, but just in general, is there more revenue coming from green fees or events (eg. corporate, wedding)? Is one side sort of subsidizing the other one? Do you consider yourself not only competing in the golf industry but also in the hospitality industry, against the likes of hotels, banquet halls, etc?

I'm in IT Consulting but my schooling is in Business and Marketing.

I just recently got my Real Estate license and will be doing that part-time in my family's Real Estate company.

I work part-time on this site, so I guess I'm in the golf business too!

Consulting doesn't give you much time to golf though it seems like my managers and partners have a lot of time to golf with clients. I just need to get to that level first! So in the meantime, I need to build up my golf skill.

I'm in Retail, I have 5 weeks Vacation a year, I get out a lot because I make the schedule, and I usually work 2 of the 3 weekend NIGHTS to allow me to play more during the day, and even more during the week. ;)
I'm also SINGLE, which helps!
It's not-so-bad, but it costs a lot of $$$, and gas prices aren't helping!:(

My buddy is a "Director of IT" for a German Auto Manufacturer in the US, he plays 2-3 times a week, rarely breaks 100 (has only played golf for the last 3 years), plays a lot of high-end courses (Medinah, Kemper Lakes, Coe Hill, Whistling Straits, Black Wolf Run, PEBBLE BEACH...and courses in Florida, Vegas, California, Hawaii)....and never has to pay!!!
The golf and meals (lunch at the course, fine dining afterwards) transportation/accomodations are all 'covered' by "vendors"

He told me one vendor took 4 of them out for dinner, and ordered (2) bottles of wine, which he estimates cost $650 per bottle!

Guess I chose the WRONG CAREER path!

Is Highland Gate the old Aurora Golf course just off Yonge Street? If so, have they done much to the course? I know they were adding a club house but the course use to be less around 6000 yds. Have the increased length or made any of the holes more difficult?

I'm in IT and our dept. gets invited to about 5 supplier tourneys in the summer and then we get hand-me-down tourneys from other dept heads that can't make it to play that day. It was great when out dept had 8 employees 'cause the 4 die-hard golfers got to play them all. After they downsized the company, there's just 4 in the dept and 3 of us golf so it's a coin toss each tourney.

My friend flips houses for a living. He buys them, guts it and rebuilds the interior and the sells them. He usually does this in the fall to spring and pretty much golfs whenever he wants in the summer. It doesn't hurt him owning a couple rental properties too. The lucky *******...

Operations Officer for Equity Transfer Services Inc. an approved Transfer Agent by the TSX and registered with SEC. Before that, worked for Computershare Trust Company of Canada (The only Global Transfer Agent in the World).

As life in the Financial Industry is not really for me, I'm doing a career change and currently doing school in the evenings (Computer Graphics Design). My passion and interest always been Computers so I'm looking to follow that desire.

I'm a newbie Golfer, this year is my 2nd year golfing and now scoring 105-110 (Used to be 120+++++ heheh). Still lots of work to do but I have my entire lifetime to learn it :)

Quite happy that I stumbled on with this forum, good bunch of people who all shares the love of golf.

I recently started a new job as a Product Analyst for one of the Top 5 Insurers of Canada. It's kept me pretty busy the past month and hence my lack of posts on TGN. I hope that will change soon with a reshuffling of my schedule this month. ;)

I drive a raymound reach (forklift) for a major grocery chain distrabution centre by day and by night I am currently developing 2 websites and operating one. I hate my job and would love to find something new but union senority is a very hard thing to walk away from. Plus I can tell my boss to go you know what himself at least 10 times before I get fired. Unfortunatly I have to work with a bunch a morons who also have that same protection, not to mention all the other union BS.

I am also learning on how to build tattoo machines and am in the works of co owning a tattoo studio in the spring. I also consider myself a real estate investor in training as that is the ultimate goal.

I'm a Project Manager for a large company here in Canada, although my senior management has been dragging me into the Ops Management side. This is really putting a damper on my golf time, as i'm forced to be on-call more and more often. :help:

Holy Hypertext Transfer Protocol Batman! I can't believe how many I.T. people are here. I'm a Network Admin for the Dept. of National Defense. We don't get invited to any of those swanky corporate tournaments because it's usually considered a "conflict of interest" and the Public Service people frown upon that. But I do get to play every Wednesday in a fun league type thing with the military guys. And it helps that my boss is a golf freak like me and I work about an 8 iron away from the first tee (literally).

I'm a Business Analyst in Electronic Banking. Just graduated a few years ago from U of T. Hardly any time to play golf except on the weekends, which ultimately costs the most.
